Hard to keep a strait face with this crew vandals. I keep saying "they can't be serious, can they?" But apparently they are. How's life in the desert by the way? A lady that worked for me was happy to retire to Tennessee, getting away from the snow and all that. So today it snowed in Tennessee to beat hell, and we're still snow free and mild up here. Eastern Tennessee. Sunny and pleasant in southwst Tennessee. Supposed to be 70 degrees Wednesday. Hello sgtjer. Hope all is well.

"I don't know enough about Jeb Bush..." Two Bushes were more than enough. We don't need a third. I would agree there. We do not need another Bush. Daddy Bush gave us Clinton, Sonny Bush gave us Obama. The thing with the Bush's is they want to be liked, and try to get along with the Dems, when the Dems would trample on you at all costs to get their agenda thru. Screw reaching across the isle, stop worrying about getting along with the Dems and being liked. Start listening to the American People and what they are asking for. They made a statement in November 2010. I agree about Romney, he is too much like Obama. I do like Newt. Sanatorum, still not sure.. Ron Paul, uh.. no.. too way out there and I disagree with some of the things he wants to do.. such as legalizing all drugs, and his views on Foreign Policies. He needs to stop running for President. Americans want a true Conservative, Romney is not. Obama has taken us down a disastrous path and we cannot afford another 4 years because it will be much worse than the first 4 years. Paul, liked your long post on the first page.

Tenn, My grandmother had a sister who owned a farm that was situated right on the border between Tenn and N. Carolina, up in the mountains. The state line actually went right through the house. My family visited her when I was about 5 or 6. I slept in a feather bed, and learned the joys of jumping off the hayloft on to a pile of hay. The farm was built before the civil war. They still carried water in from the well. It was an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

It was a rare and once in a lifetime chance to go back in time. I would collect the eggs from the chicken coup, while my great aunt made biscuits and gravy. Then she would go out and kill a chicken or two for Sunday supper.

VH-back when you visited your great-aunt there were quite a few small towns and hamlets in the (Appalachian/Smokey) mountains. Most (if not all) had outhouses too. I would have found those communities so interesting if I was alive back then. A good movie to watch is one called Songcatcher (2000). It's about a professor of musicology who goes (in 1907) to visit her sister who is a teacher at a small school in the western North Carolina Appalachian mountains. There the professor hears all the traditional English ballads from the 1600-1700s being sung by some of the town's people. The professor goes about recording the songs for posterity. The movie is loosely based "on the work of Olive Dame Campbell, founder of the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina and that of the English folk song collector Cecil Sharp."

I once saw a chicken hen gutted. I found the string of almost laid eggs (large, smaller, even smaller, even smaller still, etc.) to very interesting. Like a graduated in size string of pearls.

dj: I'm not worried at all. What worries me is the status of the economy now. Too many critical things on the table and not being attended to. <sigh> This may all seem trivial if Israel decides to start trouble with Iran. Now, that will be one hell of a thing to deal with and you know exactly what I mean.

My uncle made vodka, and I churned butter.

Eastern Tennessee. Sunny and pleasant in southwst Tennessee. Supposed to be 70 degrees Wednesday. Hello sgtjer. Hope all is well. Hi Tennesseer .... thanks for the greeting. Things are fine everywhere, kids & grandkids alike. When all is well in my world and I have nothing to worry about, I come and visit the politics boards. All this talk about farm country reminds me of my youth on my aunt and uncle's farm in the Mohawk valley of upstate NY. My job was tending to the goats. At the end of the work day, we cooled of by jumping into the Mohawk River. Those were great long days of summer vacation, spent with cousins, very fond memories. They're scattered around the country now, like most Americans, seeking the greener grass on the other side of the fence.

DW's grandparents didn't even get one of them new-fangled indoor water closets until the early '80's. I honestly don't think I could handle scrambling to an outhouse in south central Iowa in the dead of winter. One of these days, I'm going to get up that way to Deals Gap and ride the dragon......one of these days.

Everyone I know says it's totally worth the trip. The dragon that is, not the water closet. (although I suppose that is true of both) I do love an open, hilly, curvy road. Not too many of them here in the central/south FL area. After more than a decade driving these flat, mostly straight FL roads, I'm sure I'd be fairly timid my first run down the dragon.

I sometimes miss the South, with the seasons and the greenery, but the beauty down here is so magnificent and the weather so terrific, I could never leave. The county I live in has more sunshine days than any other county in the USA! There is a hotel in Yuma that still does not charge for any day in which there is no sunshine. Over in Pinellas? St Pete area? I'm in south Florida, and while the rain can and does come down here, it dumps a bit then stops. Back in Chicago, if it starts raining, you have to wonder what not what time, or even what day, but what week it'll stop.

ETA: Most Clear DaysSt. Petersburg, Florida gained the world record for the most sunny days in a row when the sun beamed down for 768 consecutive days from February 9, 1967 to March 17, 1969. In a typical year though, Yuma stands well above any other US place for the number of mostly clear days, averaging 242 days annually. Phoenix comes in a distant second with 211 days per year when clouds cover less than a third of the sky. www.currentresults.com/Weather-Extremes/US/sunniest.php
