No, I've listened to enough mostly black radio stations in the Baltimore and Philly area.
One radio host literally said that he's one of us (with the race implication), he's going to help us out.

Since Lyndon Johnson, the majority of African-Americans have voted democrat in the presidential elections. All the candidates from 1968-2004 were white. Why would African-Americans change their voting pattern because their 2008 candidate was African-American?

One radio host literally said that he's one of us (with the race implication), he's going to help us out. Here's a "one of us" quote from a Catholic about a catholic presidential candidate (with the religious implication): "Here’s the script: “I’m Danielle Bean and I live in Center Harbor. I’m calling because I’m worried. There’s something missing in our country. No one’s talking about the family, and we need to. We need to address it head-on. Only one candidate is talking about the sanctity of life and the value of the family — Rick Santorum. Senator Santorum is one of us, and he’ll fight for us. Don’t forget to vote this Tuesday. It truly does matter. And please… vote for Rick Santorum. I’m a member of CatholicVote.org, which paid for this call. Not coordinated with any campaign or campaign committee.”" www.catholicvote.org/discuss/index.php?p=24771"One of us" thinking is not unique only to African-Americans.

Posting was apparently auto-censored which seriously altered the intent of my posting. What was left was not my message so I deleted it.

I was hoping this thread would have taken more of a "Say 'what' again" turn.

I don't think I said it was. I was just pointing to the example of Samuel L Jackson. Why not use one of your two posts for the day for your topic?

That's your word, not mine, my man. Sorry to break it to you but black people aren't scary to me. I grew up in one of those areas that most middle class white people are afraid of.

Formerexpat: there is zero difference between Jackson, the black radio host and the Catholic woman. They all self-identify with Obama or Santorum.

The counterexample you give uses "one of us" in an ideological sense, not an ethnic one.
ETA: Incidentally, it was me who blanked out the epithet. I realize that it's a part of Mr. Jackson's unedited language but it's important to let readers/contributors know that we don't sanction use of the term.

I don't know that, my source had the bleeps. My money would have been on the "as" version of the word but who knows.
Samuel L Jackson talks a lot of game with some harsh words but his background is anything but scary.
I guess I just expected more out of him than that.

Never said there was - how about starting a thread about how all the religious zealot nut jobs are Santorum fans - I think I've gone over my limit for the day and you'd be doing me a favor.

Well Duh Virgil on the ethnic! White folks are often attracted to white candidates too. That's a fact.
The point is everyone identifies with some group. You do. I do. Billisonboard does. Even Formerexpat does. Be it race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, etc.

If all you're going to do here is insinuate that I'm racist, you should probably move on.

Even Formerexpat does. Be it race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, etc. Tennesseer does have a point here. It's an especially good point when you are considering the candidates and their stances on the issues that are important to you. You may be wavering between one candidate or another or you may think they all suck. In almost all cases, you are going to decide on the one you identify with the most. That's pretty common. I know a bunch of women who voted for Hillary in the primaries simply because she was a woman. This is no different.

And unless the attraction is due to some relevant ideological basis, we condemn white-voting-white on P&M too.
Most of those factors have a significant impact on ideology.
I'd give strong preference to a heterosexual man when considering an office with influence over school curricula or definition of human rights, for instance. But this has nothing to do with his sexual activities and everything to do with how receptive I believe he'll be to lobbyists pushing to normalize homosexuality.
In Mr. Jackson's case, although I suppose one can make the case that he's voting for Pres. Obama because he wants somebody "scary" and black people evidently fit the bill, he seems to be voting more for a black stereotype than an actual person. And the question being raised (implicitly) is: is this stereotype so strong that if a "scary" white candidate came along, would Mr. Jackson's loyalties sway to the side of voting his ideology (vote for the "scary" candidate), or to the side of voting for his race (vote for the black candidate, under the assumption that black men are inherently "scary").

Maybe he will meet your expectations better here:
Interview of Samuel L. Jackson on the presidential elections 2008, politics, race and gender, by Maguy Day, Mediapart.fr, sept 6 2008, Deauville, France.
