Does anyone have one? I've been looking into getting one for quite some time now, and one of the questions I have is about the free classics they offer. Are they good editions/translations? Or, am I getting what I paid for?
Thanks!

I also have the Kindle and love it as well. I've read a couple of classics and have had no issue with them so I'm sorry but I can't tell you whether they are good editions/translations. I can only imagine they would be with Project Glutenberg. I only download from Amazon's Top 100 Free Kindle books and they change it up all the time so that's a plus!

It would be a great way to try it out before you invest the $$ into the Kindle reader. I've got the program on my laptop, but I don't have time to read books during the school semester, so I haven't tried it out yet.

I don't have one, but thought if I was going to get a reader that I would want Barnes and Nobles book nook. I've heard that the kindle is going to end up being the betamax to book nook's vhs - but I don't know how reliable that is.

Nook has pretty colors but it is very slow compared to the Kindle. The need for color fades into the background when I read so I'm happy with my Kindle. My K2 is almost 3 years old. Still happy with it.

I just got a Kindle this week. LOVE it. I have downloaded approx 20 free books from Amazon already - I don't see the need to purchase anything for quite a while. Very easy to use. I didn't get the 3G. I want to read the Twilight series, but it is $35 - I'll wait another year - it should be less expensive.

Really? I would think Amazon is going to be around a lot longer than Barnes & Noble, just my guess though - who knows. LOL

One suggestion I would make - go to www.mobileread.com/forums/ You will find comparison's of all the ereaders and handy tips and tricks. And on Monday mornings they post links to 'what's free today'.

My brother has Kindle software running on hid iPad. Personally, I think a 10" tablet PC is too heavy to do much reading on. I'm waiting for the Android based 7" tablet PCs to be a viable option. I think that makes much more sense than a handheld device which only serves as an e-book reader. My prediction is that there will be some good options available before Christmas 2011. I'll wait.

trixareforkids: Thanks for the link. I already spent more time than I should have there.
I am a nook owner and love it. So much so that DH came home from the local hardware store with an e-reader he found on clearance and I said "what do You want that for"?. DD wants an e-reader and I figured I would get her the nook color. Now I will look at the reviews and look at other brands.
I thought Nook and Kindle were the best but it looks like Sony may put out a good alternative.
I also bought the Nook b/c I wanted to get rid of the book clutter. I saw many similar comments on the link.

I have a 3g +wifi Kindle and LOVE it. the free selection is pretty good too. Alot of books are under $5 too. Most of the new best sellers are around $15. I got mine at Best buy, but staples, target, and amazon also sell them and the accessories like a cover and/or night light.

I read books via the Kindle app on my ipod touch. I haven't seen the need to buy a Kindle so far, as the ipod is backlit, and the Kindle is not. The free classics are mostly straightforward editions, but I usually download newer free titles. Make sure to read the reviews. I personally, do not care for religious themes, and they seem to be in a lot of the giveaway books.
I started my ebook collection with Amazon due to the fact that they had/still have the lowest prices. For someone who averages reading 5-8 books/week, price had to be the major consideration.

I love my Kindle too!!! I chose it over the Nook because I kept reading the B&N was on the verge of bankruptcy. I didn't want to get something that may not be usable in a few years. I have read 19 books since the end of September when I got it and have not had a single problem with anything I have downloaded whether it was free or $14. Best of all my 19 books are stored on a small device and I don't have to worry about what to do with the books when I am done with them.

I received a Kindle for Christmas and love it. I've downloaded free books and bought 2 books. Truly enjoying it and would highly recommend it. It's so light and I can carry around all kinds of books on that device.
You can also buy them at Staples.

I bought my Kindle with the 3G because I do not have wireless at home. The 3G allows me to download books at home (in Stickville - LOL).

I have the Nook. It comes with 3G option. I bought the cheaper one w/o. I just make sure I download books at home. I asked the kids the password for the wireless router, they gave it to me and you are in business. I only had to enter it twice. The first time and after DH worked in the basement and disconnected/reconnected the router.
You can also download books to your nook in any Barnes & Noble store. I like that a lot - you can preview a book for an hour a day in the store before deciding to buy it.

I have the 3G and l love it. I did not have wireless at my home and for the difference in buying a wireless network and the upgraded verision, it was worth it for me. Also when i am traveling i don't have to worry about looking for a hotel/spot with the wi-fi. It is so easy to take just the kindle instead of 1-3 books with me.

I ended up getting the one without 3G. I figure along with my internet at home and work, there are plenty of hot spots in the area.

I have the Sony ereader. I did some extensive research between that and the Kindle, and decided at the end of the day I didn't want to be tied to one place (Amazon). I realize things have probably changed since I did my research, but another big consideration was borrowing ebooks from the library for free. You can do that with the Sony. My kids gave me one for Christmas, and I just love it. That's pretty much all I've done today is read a book on my reader and watch HGTV (DIY geek - sorry!). I love the fact I can hold it with one hand and turn the page with my thumb. I can also turn it my dragging across the screen, but I decided I kind of like the button option best. I've read several books on it and still have more to go. I just received an e-mail from the reader with new free books to download, so am getting ready to download them after I catch up on this site. OH, I have the daily edition, not the smaller pocket. And, I decided agains an ipad or anothersimilar type of electronic device, because my kids would figure out a way to take it over. They neither one really enjoy reading (DS does like to read history books) but I figured my device would be safe if all you could do is read from it.

Yes, Nalto. One book-one hour. And it was/is the bane of my existence. Remember the reader in elementary school? The one you got on the first day? Mine was always finished before lunch and I was in trouble. . .as usual. Early on I was just confused: wasn't I supposed to read it? Later on I just fudged; it was simpler.

Back lit readers can tire yoru eyes and is the chief complaint with that type of reader. That should be taken into consideration if you have any issues with your eyes. I have both the large and small Kindles. My granddaughter has the Nook. My husband likes the smaller Knindle for handling (size of a pocket sized book) and I like the larger Kindle because that's what I am use to. Actually I have the tablet in a cover and can prop it up and read hands free. Both Kndles are WiFi. Granddaughters Nook is color and I guess she's enjoying it since I have not heard any complaints. I accessed the MSN Money boards before they closed and also accessed my email, plus surfed the net using the Kindle..... coool! There is a long list of classic authors and their works are free. Either type in the authors name, or title of the book. Note that there are pages of titles by these authors that you can look at. Often you see the same title appear several times. Click it and note what type of version it is and if there is a charge. Sometimew you will see zero and other times 99 cents. There is no difference in the content just the price so choose the free book. I've noted recently that well known authors will have a book for a higher price one day then the next day the same title will be cheaper. If you are patient you can save money by waiting for a book to be reduced. No matter which product you buy you will save money. Oh, and you can go to your local libarry and 'borrow' a best seller for 2 weeks. Yes, they put the book on your reader for two weeks just as if you were borrowing a paper book. Not all libraries cover both the Kindle and Nook so you do have to check on that. I loaded several free classics on my IPod Touch for a recent 2 day drive to Florida. For some reason I did not get car sick reading.

I have the Kindle (got it last April) and really like it. I've downloaded many of the free classics, plus other free books where the author is trying to get his/her name out. I've also purchased several books. I hav the 3G/wireless version, which was a must for me so I can download books when I'm traveling internationally. I also love that I can browse books on Amazon.com, buy one, and it'll download to my Kindle the next time I turn it on.

To those who have one, do you have the one with 3G? Is it worth the extra money? 2 summers ago I bought my kindle DX. It has the 3G access on it, and at the time, to get one without wasn't an option. I liked the DX in that it's bigger (almost the size of a piece of paper) and really thin. The 3G just makes it so nice to be somewhere and just buy your book. No need to hook it up to your computer. And being we travel a lot, it's so nice to just download a book at the airport, or outside at a soccer game, etc. I've been slowly transferring my library onto it. I only buy a few authors, so I'd buy the new book when it was out on my kindle. I've downloaded a bunch of free books, as well as the free games. My concern about the nook is only that it's run by a book store that is having financial difficulty. How it was explained to me is that the kindle, being backed up by amazon, is like the ipods are backed up by apple. And if you buy a new kindle, you can transfer the library you've already bought onto that kindle. SOOoooo, to me it was a no brainer. But in no way was I intending to start a nook/kindle fight. That's just how it was explained to me. And the kindle has been around much longer than the nook. My mother in law saw mine, and got one for her birthday and loves it. It's very easy to use. Hope this helps! Shawn in FL
