I had a left hip replaced in Feb 2001. I never heard of a hip revision. Learn something new everyday, thanks. i hadn't either. i asked him what the difference was, and he reminded me he'd posted videos on his facebook hahaha.. i hadn't (and still haven't) watched them. anyway, think of it like simple replacement of worn parts, is what it sounded like to me. bad ball and socket (which were leaching all the metal into his blood stream) out, and the new put in.. all the prep work was done in the initial replacement. i'm sure he'll explain it much better / more accurately when he gets back. How, in the Twenty-first century, in the USofA, with the best HealthCare and Technology in the world, does a person end up with "metal leaching into his bloodstream" from a surgical implant?

I don't know about Diver's particular case, but I do know some of the implants that were used were faulty. If I remember correctly, DePuy implants were implicated. They stopped using them a couple of years ago.

You will have to ask Diver for specifics.. they clearly were not manufactured properly, and while they claim the recall they did on his implants is 'voluntary', i believe Diver said they were forced to recall them outside the US. www.depuy.com/asr-hip-replacement-recallOne of the posts diver made on facebook indicated one expert said "2" is normal (for metal levels) . On March 2011 he was at "28"..... and Oct 2011..... "78". you really have to wonder what the long term health risks are with something like that.

Medical crap happens. In 1992 I had a improperly sterilized port a-cath put into me. Caused me more health issues than I wanted to deal with.

I got a message from him *very* early this morning, saying he'd died. I think the drugs just make him think he's in heaven, lol. Anyway, it explains why he answered the phone yesterday like he was the mortuary.. tee hee..
Unfortunately, his cell died mid-message, so I'll have to call the hospital for an update.

FDA is one of my divisions. Most newly approved devices are approved through the 510(k) process. This is for devices considered substabtially equivalent to devices already on the market. The approval process is much less stringent. Most of the recalled devices have been approved under this process.

Our diver seems to be feeling MUCH better today.. Not released yet... He's not sure if it will be today, or tomorrow. He is up and walking around and defying orders not to leave the ward.

Well he's itching to get out, that's a good sign. Of course you can't heal in a hospital, when they are poking at you every hour or so. Nurses & doctors coming around at all hours, drives me bonkers.

Lots of folks figure all they have to do is get home and they'll feel great. Actually, it's often the opposite. They try to do too much and find out they're weak as kittens, and they hurt. The big drugs are wearing off, and they have to do some things for themselves they had done for them while in hospital. They just aren't aware of what the change in activity is going to take out of them. The physical therapy will be difficult, at first, but it will help him get going again and start to build back his stamina. Hope you're feeling better soon, diver. Just take it easy, hon.

yes I was one of the first people to receive the "Depuy ASR All metal Hip implant" in 06 and my left hip was done in 07 same device... In 08 the first recall began out of Australia, and yes it was "forced"... Then Europe followed... And Johnson and Johnson pulled the Depuy off the market...... Citing "It just isn't selling".... (hmm wonder why? ??).... Oh Johnson and Johnson is "Depuy"..... Bet ya didn't know dat did ya? Then in late 09? ? I think the FDA (our federal govt) made inquiry to JnJ as to whether or not the depuy asr device was recalled in other countries and for what reason.... (High Failure rate)...... not down the road "docs put device in, and something would happen and have to "immediatly" pull it back out... Why was it not selling again? ? (Piece of crap).... you can go to DePuys website, and they have listed that a "less than 10%" Failure rate "Out the gate" is the reason for the recall........ THAT IS A LIE!. The initial failure rate, OUT THE GAME is/was over 20%......... That is why people are just now beginning to see the DePuy ASR lawsuit commercials on TV(Class Action suits)...... Now what "isn't" posted on DePuys/Johnson and Johnsons little website........ The is also two metals that flake off this devise, not actual metals, Ions..... This happens when you or I "move the hip"...... This hip is made of Titanium... Both the ball (part that is normally the hip ball bone at the end of the large bone in your leg better known as the "Femur", and socket which is in the everyday persons Pelvis that part was/is metal now... (what is on facebook is an actaull hip replacement from start to finish (real footage). with drills saws, rasps, files, blood from marrow...... the Real McCoy.... And it is hmmmmmm Graffic? ? But nothing you would not see on those surgical shows on T.V like "Real life in the E.R."...... The other video's are a "revision" surgery...... Then I have several video's of a Toxicology Expert talking about the two Metal Ions (cobalt and chromium) that are getting into the bloodstream and passing through every organ (Heart, Liver, Kidneys, Lungs, etc etc etc) and he is telling everyoine what affects these two "heavy Metals" are on the body... And what I am now at risk for...... (Cardiomyopathy, Liver damage, Soft tissue damage around the implant devise, Hyper Thyroidism, Lung Cancer, Cancer period, and the list goes on and on)...... Johnson and Johnson feels that they have a right to somehow "not even bother to let me know this", that they had done the proper reseach and that these implant devices are safe to be in me "Period". There were over 93,000 of these devices placed into patients in the U.S. alone....... And the patients were never told of the potential levels these things went to..... The letter came to "ME" for initial testing in Early 2010, and I was Tested (bloodtest and MRI Scan) in June 2011 count 28 parts per billion (now the normal that you or the person on another screen count would read (.00000009 to 2 parts per billion)... The medical speak for 28 parts per billion is "ELIVATED"...... Docs recommendation? ?/ Revision........ Now in 06 when these things were put into me, all I did was go to Hosp to have a "hip replacement surgery done".. I did not know what implant device was going to be put in me. Typical implant devices to that point were either made of plasic and metal, Plastic on Ceramic, etc etc etc. My ortho did not know what type of device would be used on me either. It was left up to the decision of the "Sales Rep". And the DePuy ASR hip is what was put into me, and it was put into me by the "top leading" Orthopedic Surgeon in San Antonio, and Top rated Nationally as well by the Orthopedics Surgeons Association..... This same Ortho was notified that he needed to contact all his patients who he placed this device into in 2010, this doc sent me my first notice to come back in, have a very expensive MRI done (called a Metal suppresive MRI) and also have a bloodtest to see what the level of metal was in my body.......

You've heard all that before..."come on, you can bend that a little more" or "ok ,just 5 more minutes on the machine." "Come on, just one more round around the nurses station (as you are trying to look dignified in that stupid open backed gown they have you wear)
