Ron Paul May Throw a Major Political Curveball

There's some rumblings now that Ron Paul may throw his support behind Newt Gingrich?

There's a suggestion floated out there by a huge (305,000 + members) Ron Paul facebook group to do just that...

Could Ron Paul and his loyal supporters be the key to defeating the establishment republican candidate Moderate Mitt? I think even most Ron Paul supporters would agree the odds of Ron Paul winning the nomination and presidency are very low. But what if Ron Paul and his supporters threw the establishment republicans the biggest curveball in history by joining Newt team and be appointed Sec of Treasury where he could be the most help? If Santorum and Paul agreed to join Newt team as VP and Sec of Treasury, everyone would win except the establishment. Why don't we contact them and suggest it?

I'm not sure that a) most Ron Paul supporters are in touch with the reality that he has no shot, or b) Ron Paul would do it. I don't think he would.

I consider myself a Ron Paul supporter. I know it is unlikely Dr Paul will win the nomination. If/when he doesn't, I will support Gary Johnson. If this helps to get President Obama re-elected, so be it. If we're going to go run the country into the ground, I'd prefer to do it at the highest speed possible to get it over with sooner rather than later.

i disagree. i think Romney's chances are way better. Newt is HATED by moderates, and it is moderates who will decide this, not conservatives.

Obama Light = Romney

Obama Right = Gingrich

I'll be voting for Johnson.

Paul won't win, and I will vote for him anyway. I however would not vote for Newt with Paul as his SoT. I couldn't stomach that vote, especially with Santorum as his VP.

Honestly, I don't get the whole "Anybody But Obama" drive of some people. Really, what's the point of defeating Obama if we simply get another power hungry arrogant talking head in the White House? It's essentially the same puppet with different masters.

I suppose the saying 'anything worth doing is worth doing right' comes to mind as well. If we're going to tank the country I can't think of a better pair to accomplish the task.

What exactly is a "facebook group". If you understand what it is, you would understand that the idea that the "suggestion (was) floated .. by... (the) group" is an absurdity. It is likely that someone threw the quote in the OP up on the "wall" to try and get it to stick. That someone could very easily have been a Newt supporter.

FL is a closed primary so I really doubt any of the candidates really give a rats ass what us unaffiliated FL voters think....until Wednesday anyway.

fy- these polls are really weird in Florida right now. half of them show that Romney's lead is increasing wildly. the other half show that it is staying about the same, within margin of error. however, NO polls are showing significant erosion, and ALL are showing him leading by at least 5% (most show him leading by about 10%). so, i think he will win, but it could be anything from close to a blowout.

Paul supporter, no I don't think he can become GOP candidate, still voting for him because of delegates. It is wishful thinking on the Gingrich camp that Paul would support him for a post. Paul may very well obtain enough delegates to have something very valuable to trade. He will trade his delegates for firm commitments, from the eventual nominee, for smaller government. It will be plain that strong support of Paul will be a victory for small government and libertarian philosophy, even without a potential libertarian president.

Paul knows he is not going to win. Then why keep on? Simple answer. Party platform. If Paul can get enough delegates then when it comes to shaping the platform he can barter his support for another candidate on points that he is passionate about to be included in the final draft of the platform. For those that have forgotten this has been done more than once in political elections. Will he be successful in his efforts? Time will tell.
