Dressed and ready to go run errands and I can't go anywhere.
There's an EMS rig parked behind my car, blocking me in. I suspect that they've been called for my neighbor - again.

The depths of your sincere compassion for your neighbor overwhelms me.

Oh Piss off AB, if you've read about Mich and her neighbor on the board rather than taking cheap shots, Mich has bent over backwards helping her out AND calling emergency services more than one for her.

I agree with TD. You obviously have not read any of Mich's threads.

Mich, Is she ok? Do you know? I hope so. If I know Mich, she's already with the neighbor being of help to her in some fashion.

Aw, Mich, this isn't good when the EMS folks get called. I hope things are OK.

EMS came and took her to the hospital. Apparently, she called them, thinking that her neighbors were spying on her and snakes were coming out from the toilet. I had dinner with her just a little over a week ago and she was quite coherent, so not sure where this is coming from. If I had to hazard a guess, she uses her O2 and is quite coherent. Since she feels good, she stops using it and her brain doesn't get the oxygen she needs, and the delusions/hallucinations start.
There was a cop waiting outside when I came down and he wanted to know if there was anyone he should contact. I gave him her daugher's name and phone number to call. Since I have the key to her apartment, I'll probably check on her cat tomorrow, but since I'm going out of town that's really all I can do this time.

It might be any meds too she's on too - or a combination of different meds causing the hallucinations along with the lack of oxygen.

Amen to that thought. Happened to my mom recently. Turned out to be a blocked heart artery (and possibly a mild heart attack), plus a diabetic episode plus a mix of too many meds. Man, just the idea of getting old ages me!

My grandmother has been getting constant UTIs, and that makes her mind go completely wonky (more than it normally is).

I don't think she's taking very many meds. The oxygen is her biggie, her COPD is not allowing her to get enough oxygen and when she gets enough, she refuses to use it. I don't think she wraps her brain around the fact that she needs it 24/7. She has an oxygen generator in her apartment, but it seems to be rarely used, she normally is attached to a tank and she tends not to be proactive about placing orders with the medical supply company.
Last weekend, when we went out to dinner, she brought her tank but didn't use it.

*Sitting quietly in the corner thinking that believing the neighbors are spying on you and snakes are coming out of your toilet really isn't THAT weird.*

A elderly neighbor of my mothers had a UTI and was convinced that the Taliban was setting up camp in the park behind her house. When her grandson who lived next door when to check on her like her did every evening she thought he was visiting from out of state because she hadn't seen him in months.

I have to think that this came from me. When I called EMS on her the first time, I told her that I did keep an eye on her. I told her that I watched to make sure her newspaper was picked up off her doormat. I told her that I watched to see the lights go on and off in her apartment, and that the blinds open/shut.
This was when she got royally pissed at me, when there were 3 papers on her doorstep, she would not answer either her landline or cell. Her blinds had not moved, her car had not moved and she didn't answer the door when I knocked on it - several times.
I called maintenence to get them to open the door. The door was locked, with the interior bolt thrown (one of those bolts that you find on doors of hotel rooms). That meant she was there. So with the door open 3", we yelled at her like crazy, no answer. I called EMS and the maintenence guy went to get a hacksaw, to saw through the bolt. Cops got here when he was about halfway through sawing, EMS arrived when they finally got through the bolt. Turned out she was asleep in bed. But she had been sleeping the last 2 days and she was sleeping like the dead. She was sick, but refused to go with EMS.
Cop told me today that she's called 911 at least once/week to report hallucinations over the last several weeks.

Mich, I'm so sorry she's going through this.
I hope it gets better.

Gosh Mich, I think she may have hit the point we all don't want to get to. Maybe she can't take care of herself anymore and should go into assisted living? Have you mentioned this to her or her daughter yet?

Her daughter has been trying to get her into an assisted living place for the last year. She's turned down 2 spots (that I know of) because her mom refuses to go.
She cannot take care of herself anymore. But the daughter cannot force her mother to do something she does not want to do.
When TD and I went to dinner tonight, I noticed that her lights were on in the apartment. They were off when we got home. So apparently she was released from the hospital sometime the last week.

Try contacting your senior center and ask them for references for help. I know Annies Mailbox had a letter on this in the past 3 mos. but I didn't take note of anything. The yellow pages of your phone book might have aging services listed. Best wishes.

This lady is beyond assisted living. She has some serious medical issues that are going to get worse. At least with the EMS call, bht bureau of aging may have been notified and will get on the case.
