TT, See my revised post above. I can't help you in New York. However, you should be aware that even catastrophic policies are underwritten. That means that if you have a serious illness, you are not going to qualify.

I hear you, TT. After 60 days, you have pre-existing conditions limitations, which, in some states, can limit coverage for up to 2 years...and if you lie on your application, and they catch you within 2 years, they can give you all of your money back, and "rescind" coverage. These are the things that we put into all contracts where we could get away with it. I hated doing it, but if I worked for the only company that did not put these clauses in, our company would be the first to go out of business. You can only eliminate stuff like that on a national basis. Otherwise, competition forces all companies to screw you over.

The insurance company is screwing you over if you lie and commit fraud? Come on, if you've worked in the industry, you know better than this.

Well, that could be their misfortune. I have paying over $1000+ a year for mine. So, that is $1K i could have been using for vacations, stuff, homes, cars or whatever but that is the choice i made for myself because i value financial security over things. I pay $980 a month for mine.

Let's undo the devastating government interferences in our healthcare system from the past 50 years [Medicare, healthcare through employer, HMO, Obamacare] and let the free market come up with a better solution. There is no free market solution for health care- at least not for a system where the goal is to provide affordable access for all citizens. Of course, that is not the goal of the republicans. How has the government done containing costs so far? You realize even the private aspects of or system are the result of gov't? The goal is the best care, at the lowest price, for the greatest number of people, recognizing tha o system is perfect.

Awesome video. Karma baby!!! it would be a lot more awesome if he asked the right question, but he doesn't. the question is not "why don't we get rid of health insurance and have the government be responsible for medical care". that question is a non-sequitur, because nobody has ever suggested doing that. what we have suggested is something far more modest, and in keeping with our principles: that we simply eliminate the middle man and collectively self-insure. so....why don't we?

How has the government done containing costs so far? terribly. and that has happened for one very simple reason: that private carriers are still in the middle of the game, fucking us over.

I pay $980 a month for mine. and you don't think that is perverse? i do. No, I call it priorities. Take the girl in the video. She could have roommates, cut other expenses, and save less- and be responsible for herself. But she CHOOSES not to. How many people do you know with an iPhone who pay $150 to $200 a month for service? How many of these same people do you know that have a $400 a month car payment? Who spend $25 to $50 a week on video games, and even more on iTunes and other services? Who have all the game systems, a flat screen TV, take one or more annual vacations, have a big house or nice apartment? The entire point of this video is that it's your health. YOUR. HEALTH. Make it a priority. Be responsible. As to the silly idea of "collectively self-insuring" that is called socialism, and the reason it doesn't work is that when EVERYONE is responsible, the NO ONE is responsible.

But she CHOOSES not to. Agreed. But, then she still uses the health care system freely & doesn't even pay the bill. People like this is why health care costs & as a result insurance costs keep going up. People like this are why I support making insurance mandatory. If you are going to use the system, then you should have to pay for it & since we aren't turning people away at the ERs, then they should be paying into health insurance.

How many? 0
How many people do you know have to pull a strawman to win an argument? (You know, make uninsured people into irresponsible people who only spend money on video games and i-phones). Too many. Hint; anecdotal evidence in your favor does not save the day.

I have inadequate insurance and a crisis could wipe me out. I don't know if your insurance is really adequate then. IMO, adequate insurance would protect you in a crisis. NY is tough though, their rules keep a lot of insurers out of the state & make insurance costly. Here a healthy woman my age could easily get decent insurance for under $200/month easily. Since I have several pre-existing conditions, I likely wouldn't be able to get insurance at all though. I used to pay $60/month for DH's individual insurance & his even covered doctor appointments with a $50 copay, so it wasn't just catastrophic.

I went to the bluecross blueshield website to get a quote for a single 26 yo non-smoking female in northeastern Oklahoma. And it was $124 a month. Family of 4 was $455.
