after record snowfall in the northeast US, there are still hundreds of thousands of people without power/water/heat. thankfully, I'm not one of those people anymore. I will be hosting a couple friends tonight who are. northeast posters - please check in when you can, so we know you're OK.

Glad to hear you are ok, Chiv. We lost power Saturday about 6 PM. My wife was very nervous througout the night as we heard things cracking and popping and saw lights flashes and what not.
Our backyard is covered with tree limbs, the largest of them is about 12-18 inches in diameter, but luckily nothing hit the house.
We went to my parents on Sunday because they were only without power for about 4 hours. My brother and his girlfriend bunked there, too.
We live in a very populated suburb, so I hope we will be one of the first areas to be resorted, but I still have a feeling we will be without power for a while.
We do have power at the office, though. ; )

I am fine although I cannot say the same about NYC's trees. I am sad that many fine trees have been lost and in fact were turned from things of beauty, into weapons of house-destruction. It sounds just like the October Storm we had up here in WNY back in 2006. We lost soooo many trees too.

There were a lot of trees down in northern NJ when I left yesterday. 14 inches of snow at my friend's. Lots of people without electric and many traffic lights were out. We didn't lose power but our Halloween party was cancelled.

holy crap! that's a lot in the 81-100% affected areas. I hope everyone's able to find heat. I tried to find a similar map for MA, but I think we've got too many provider options to be able to get an accurate picture like that. I do know that Worcester proper got about a foot of snow, and the northwest corner of the state got upwards of 2 feet. friends in both locations are still w/o and expect to be for the foreseeable future too. I also can't believe the damage to the trees. my commute to work is one of two ways around a big lake - a very heavily traveled state road or a narrow, winding road through a state park that goes in the other direction. I typically take the winding road, and did so this morning without thinking. I almost had to turn around, there were so many trees down in the park. that whole town is still w/o power, too, so I don't think the downed trees are tops on the priority list. speaking of priorities, one young man died this weekend from a downed live power line. I heard about it when I went out to a nearby hotel last night to charge my cell phone and watch football. www.boston.com/Boston/metrodesk/2011/10/residents-dig-out-thousands-without-power-after-unbelievable-snow/fzlx9WEQH50OC01s0kOlTL/index.html?p1=News_linksfrom that link - In Springfield, 20-year-old Jeffrey Mattarazzo of 117 Shady Brook Lane of Springfield was electrocuted Saturday evening after leaving his vehicle in traffic on Parker Street and touching a wooden guardrail that had been electrified by a downed wire, police said.
Asked why Mattarazzo left his vehicle and touched the guardrail, Springfield Police Captain William Collins said by phone Sunday night, “I think he was just curious.” stay safe, everyone!

We didn't lose power although a lot of the town did. One of my kids has school today, the other doesn't since they go to two different high schools. We don't have that many mature trees left along my street. We've lost so many in the past couple of years due to storms. My "Rose of Sharon" (flowering tree) was already listing from the weight of all the flowers this year. It's at a 45 degree angle. Not sure I'll be able to save it. I feel really lucky. We've dodged most of the major damage from the last few storms, although the ice dams from last winter are directly responsible for the current mudroom addition.

The map won't load for me, but I'm eastern MA. On the local news this morning it looked like they drew a circle around my section of town and we were the only ones with power.

won't load past the logo in the upper left corner. I will say that's not a major supplier in MA though. I'll see if I can find NSTAR or National Grid's information. those are the two biggies up here. hi, Malarky. my parents didn't lose either, across town. in fact, they still have the contents of my fridge/freezer in theirs since I wasn't sure how long I'd be without this time.

I think that is the major supplier in the area that got hit the hardest.

Thanks for the CT outage info, Archie. I have a friend in north-central CT, and he has heat, thanks to a wood stove and fireplaces and a large supply of wood. His house has solar power (I am wondering if that helps him now, assuming he "stored" some energy in the summer).

We didn't lose power but our Halloween party was cancelled. yeah that was a bummer, but we got lots of exercise shoveling the drive way multiple times

Unfortunately, unless he has an extensive battery system, he cannot store solar energy.

He has the panels and some kind of storage system, so I presume he has batteries. How extensive it is, I cannot tell you. He just installed the system this summer (late) so I don't know how much he would have been able to store, even with the batteries. He has three fireplaces, and his kitchen stove is gas, so I think they will be OK. He has a snowplow on his truck, but they are in a very rural area of CT. We saw the edge of this mess in eastern NJ/NY on Saturday, as we left Newark. We were fortunate to get out only 5 1/2 hours late; many flights, including the one that was supposed to get to Newark, but was sitting on the tarmac in Hartford, never made it out at all.

We're getting our very first snow of the season as I type this. It started overnight with just a few white flakes, and now it's the big wet heavy flakes coming down. It's not cold out so it's melting on the pavement and sidewalks. Once it builds up a bit, all that moisture's going to be there to freeze overnight, making the roads slick for tomorrow. It's too soon for this kind of weather - send it back.

We've had no snow, but it was in the mid-30s last night. That's plenty of winter for me, thanks. Spring can come any day.

No snow here in SW Tennessee. Sunny and only a high of 70 today.

I went back home during my lunch hour.
Just driving through the streets in town it is just unbelievable. There are power lines down everywhere. Every street has multiple lines down as well as the lines going to individual houses are down. I also heard on the radio that the transmission lines that bring power from the generation plants are down. This is going to be a long one.
I am going to get all of the food out of my freezer tonight and bring it to my parents. I may be able save that lasagne yet!

I'm so sorry, Archie. That sounds just dreadful. I hope all those without power are able to find warm places to be.

Wow! I just read over 3 million people are out. I hope most have fireplaces to keep warm if they have nowhere else to go. Stay safe - those of you who are dealing with this!
