Would you do it, have you done it? No real excuse other than you're tired of the bs that is going on and want a break?
If you've done it, what did you do?

We had a mass exodus at work one morning, with the boss's blessing.
Absolutely beautiful day in TX and we all decided to go to the lake and go skiing. No one had anything pressing to do, so we asked our boss if it was ok. I think he'd have joined us, if he hadn't had so many meetings scheduled.
So went home, gathered up suits and towels. A quick stop at the grocery store to buy stuff for lunch and fill up a cooler and we were on the road an hour later and on the lake before noon.
It was a very good day!

It was tempting this morning. I woke up at 5:15 with a horrible charlie horse. I could have used some more sleep and I have things that need done at home.
I did a couple winters ago the year we got hammered with two foot plus snow storms in a month. I was tired of fighting the road conditions every day on a two hour round trip commute. I stayed home, slept and studied for my upcoming CPA exam.
Sometimes you just need a mental health day. Or it is a day like Mich described where it is a crime to be stuck inside at work all day.

I was sooooo tempted to do that this morning, well, pretty much every morning, but I'm dressed and ready for work...
I've done it in the past. Never really did anything fun, but stayed home and hung out, watched a movie, did housework, that kind of stuff. Before my last surgery I felt like crap almost all the time and I *could* have gone to work, but sometimes it was a huge struggle to even get motivated to get out of bed. Now that I'm feeling better I'm using a lot less leave.

I took some sick days earlier this year. Most of them I just slept. When you call off and sleep for another six hours straight it might be a sign you needed that day off. I also took the rest of the day off after a few doctor's appointments bc they ran late and I didn't feel like rushing to get back to work.

Before my last surgery I felt like crap almost all the time and I *could* have gone to work, but sometimes it was a huge struggle to even get motivated to get out of bed.
I was like this before my last hip replacement. It took me so long to get up and ready for work in the morning that I was exhausted just getting out of the door. Plus the fact that the narcotics that I took the night before were wearing off and my pain level was racheting up a log.
It took me nearly slipping and falling in the middle of the street before I realized that I just couldn't do it in the snow. Had I fallen in the middle of the street, my joint would not have supported me getting up off the ground and I'd have been stuck there. So after that realization, I'd leave each day from work with a jump drive of data that needed to be worked with and each morning would get up and check to see if it snowed. If it snowed, I'd crawl back into bed for another hour or so. If it snowed at work, people would give me the head's up and hustle me out of the building before it got slippery.
Not a period in my life I'd like to repeat....ever.

I have used my sick leave for "mental health" days, not very often but occasionally. I consider mental health part of your overall well being, so I didn't really consider it calling in well, but some might. Some days I just don't have it in me.
I don't recall ever going AWOL for a full, day, but I have done things like take a long lunch, take work time to get a haircut, slept late on purpose ect. Again, not very often but ocassionally. I more than make up for it working late and coming in the weekends.

At my last job we had sick days and personal days that were use or lose.
Dept director actually encouraged us to have 'mental health' days and use them.

I took the days off and slept earlier this year after I spent a day staring at my computer. I was in so much pain I couldn't focus. When it wasn't a snow day I started to drag myself out of bed then I stopped. I slept 6 more hours and went to the doctor that afternoon.
We can bank unlimited sick leave. I am trying to build mine back up I've used 91 hours this year. I'm trying to be smarter about it after running myself so far down this year. Don't want to go there again.

We can bank unlimited sick leave too, and it seems like the only time I take it is when I need to be cut upon. Right now, even after taking a couple months off earlier this year, I still have 408 hours remaining. However, that could be wiped out if I ever need a revision in the next few years.

I've taken a few hours here and there, but normally I do it if I have some task or project to take care of. I get it done, then reward myself with the extra time to do what I want. But a whole day? Never done it, that I can recall. It sounds like a wonderful idea.
Then again, I rarely even sleep in or just wing it as far as my day goes. Everything does tend to be pretty well planned out. Not sure if my way is good or bad; it's just what I am used to doing.

When HD plays hookie he usually sleeps in, at least until I get home from work around lunch time. If I do, I usually try to get stuff done around the house.

I guess I should have explained why I asked the question at 4:30 a.m.
I've had the last 2 weeks from hell. My boss was out sick, so I was doing her job and mine, staying late, bringing work home, either no lunch break or a very short one. Plus all the stupid stuff of dealing with new duties (I now have the work of 4 extra people) because because of downsizing/reorganizing, etc. No raises in the last 4 years and none in the future.
So I decided that I needed a mental health day. I have to use sick time, since we do not have personal days and vacations need to be scheduled 2 weeks in advance. I feel quilty, but I sure am enjoying the beautiful weather here. ;D

Once in few months, I take a sick day off if I have them. My logic is I am sick of work, so it counts and we cannot bank them

Feeling quilty because I know that I'm now further behind on some projects that "I" said would be done. But I didn't count on the extra work load, so not really my fault. Also guilty because I decided to take a mental health night from class tonight. But it's one of my easier classes, so I can deal with it. I think I've just decided to check out of life for the day. I'm going to play around on the boards today, do some research for a couple of papers that are due next month, and just piddle around the house. Lazy yes, but it feels right as long as it's just for today.

I think companies who are expecting a lot more from their employees without providing compensation are going to be seeing a lot more of this. My DH has a horrible cold and is home today. Is he in bed resting like he should be? NO!! Because of the internet and net meeting he is in the office working. There is no accrual of sick days where he works. If you're sick, you take whatever time off you need with full pay - whether it be for a cold or for cancer. He's been there for over 31 years. If he could have accrued and banked sick leave, he'd have a boatload banked cuz he's rarely taken any sick time - just like he's not taking it today.

I'm rarely sick (luckily) so my sick days are put in my personal emergency and disability banks at work (I used one sick day so far this year, I get 10 a year). I'm glad I have these extra banks because I took off a couple of days last week because my mom had a small stroke. It was a very stressful week, to say the least, so I decided that since I had a dentist appointment yesterday, it was the perfect day to not come in at all. I'm glad I did. I hate using sick time when I'm not sick, but I just needed a day off.

On Monday I tried to do the right thing and I got screwed. So I had to deal with an unruly neighbor with a noise complaint and had to call the cops twice on her. After being stressed from police interaction and little sleep (happened at 3:30 in the morning). I needed some rest (just the rest of the morning to sleep). I call my boss and he says it's fine and I can make up the work later. He then asks his boss where we can fit this in the schedule. She flips out saying that I must work my scheduled hours (didn't used to be this way a few months ago) and I had to take annual vacation time. I should have just called in sick. I got punished for wanting to work. I could have called in sick and no one would have been the wiser. I know what I'll do next time.

I just told my employer (the owner, not just my boss) this morning that the weather was so beautiful today that I should have played hookie. Damn, now I feel kinda like I can't call in sick in the next few days (gorgeous weather is supposed to continue at least through the weekend)!

Thanks everyone for making me not feel too quilty. It's been a great day, although I did not do all the things that I thougt I would do. Oh well, tomarrow is another day......I want to play hooky again, but know that I really can't. Good news is I have to take 40 hours of vacation time between now and mid-December or I loose the extra hours. ;D I can only roll over 300 hours at this point. I just wish that I could predict what will be going on in life so when I take the time off, I can just chill.

When I was an employee of the federal government, I did take mental health days--especially when it snowed.
All the jobs I've had since, if I don't show, I don't get paid, so no mental health days. If I am sick, I just call in sick and don't get paid.
