The Controlled/No Spend thread is undergoing an overhaul as we get back to the fundamentals of the thread while still maintaining the comraderie that keeps us coming back and makes us successful- even if not initially.
Thanks Mittenkitten for the monthly intro and Reeneejune for organizing the weekly captains.
Here is this month's Controlled/No Spend Thread as promised. Please post your goals for the month if you would like me to include them in the bi-Monthly update. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example I personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in December have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month.
CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) MOAN: Moving our a$$ Now aka exercising NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Getting Nitzed is referring to when you have a long post and MSN cuts you off so its in two posts instead one. Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Sharing the Simple Lifestyle aka Toasty; Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; Red2Black aka R2B2. The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. the boy or Mowgli is Nsinglet's son Blue is Red_Wagon's DH TBear is MizBear's older niece. ZBear is MizBear's younger niece.
Every week we try to have a question of the week (QOTW) and challenge of the week (COTW) related to the question.
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady, some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

My goals for this month: 5 CS 23 NS 20 MOAN 28 NEO
I am training for my 5K in November- which is budgeted for this month. I am going to try and separate my NS and my CS to see if I can stay away from SB if it is not in the budget.

Good idea on separating NS/CS. I may try that this month. My goals: 10 NS 15 CS 20 NEO I am optimistic... October is my favorite month. Fall weather, colorful leaves, Halloween, 2nd anniversary, haunted houses, pumpkin beer, DH's birthday... I love it. Our roller derby team is skating in the Oktoberfest parade tomorrow, so it will probably be a CS and EO. I plan on spending a lot of time in the beer garden after we skate Then I have to drive 45 miles to spend Saturday night and Sunday morning camping with DH's family... fun fun. I may end up taking a personal day Monday, haven't decided yet.

I am in with 24 NSD, 7 CSD, 0 EOD. I am going to eat out this month but it is planned, so I am not counting it as an eating out day, just a controlled spend day. On the 1st I am going to pay most of my bills; mortgage, hospital, garbage. I am also going to get a FEW groceries; cat food, litter, tp, milk, bread, lunch meat, and maybe 2 boxes of RED BARRON pizza slices for the microwave. Everything that is on my list is cheaper at WalMart except tp and milk, hopefully $25 or less at Wal Mart and $5 at my store where I work. I work 12-5 today so I will pick up the things on my way home. Then I will gather my laundry and go do that before going to Wal Mart to get the other things. I want to get at least one tub of clothes washed that is out in the other room. There is a really bad smell coming from there and I think it is from clothes that are not in tubs. I blamed the cats for going on my bed but the smell isn't coming from there and it only smells when I leave the screen door open. Honey; Thank you for that laugh. It was a good one. I need to copy them down for my friend who doesn't have a computer. I don't have a printer so that is why I have to write them down.

Final Update: 23 CS/NS, 24 NEOs, 18 MOANS I'm cross-posting this update in September too since I'm not sure which thread is best for final update. I think my goals were a little too high for last month but I'm proud of my attempt. I did manage to blow the MOAN goal out of the water which I'm excited about since I'm really trying to change my outlook on exercise etc. Anyways, here's my new goals for October:
October Goals: 25 CS/NS days, 20 NEOs, 15 MOANs

Well, I'm back. I lurked last month and realized how much I missed this thread and also how much I NEED IT!! ;D I have a new budget and I really need to stay on it. I need to watch my spending real close to make sure it works. So I am in at 20 NSD. This means staying on budget and not spending outside or over each category. I'm going to just start with that because in the past I have had 3 or 4 goals and got bogged down with it which in turn made me fall off the wagon.

So far I'm at 1NSD, 1 CSD, 0 EOD. Went camping with the in-laws yesterday, it was a pretty fun time. Did some grocery shopping when we got home this afternoon and went to the pumpkin show. I now have a beautiful 3" pumpkin for my desk at work

I will be keeping my goals the same: 15 NS and 10 CS days
Update: 1 NS day & 0 CS days
RedRuby -- Welcome Back! I am not on as much as in the past but do try to update at least once a week sometimes more. How have you been? Anything new and exciting happening in your life?
Today I decided to cook -- crock pot is on (beans), ground meat has been browned and ready for whatever and I have enough from lunch for another meal. Hopefully that means that I will begin to eat healthier than I have the last few weeks.
School has been busy and I know that this week will be hectic as parent teacher conferences are scheduled. Also this weekend I have the first of the two craft shows that I am registered for. So if you don't hear from me you know that I am swamped.
Wishing all of you a good week!

update; 2 NSD, 0 NEO. So far so good. I got groceries yesterday at my store and spent $2.38. I got groceries today at Wal Mart and spent $20.85. I got everything I need for this week for meals. Right now I am going to pay my bills and see where that leaves me.

I'll be back later to update, right now I am going to the gym to think.
Today would have been grandma's 81st bday, she died of Alzheimer's Disease in 2009.
Yesterday my cousin's grandma died of Alzheimer's as well and I have missed that sweet woman for the past 4 years (when she stopped recognizing family).
It's a tough day.

Oh startsmart I'm sorry. I lost my dad a month and a half ago, on my birthday. I got there 5 minutes after he passed. Today has been tough for me too. Must be something in the air. I can't imagine a loved one not recognizing family for the last years of their life. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Hope tomorrow is better.

30 minutes swimming laps helped somewhat, I really like my new gym.
I started thinking of the grandmas who were such good friends. Because they both had a disease that influenced memory they would "parrot" and my aunt would sit in the room and say "isn't startsmart pretty?" and both grandmas would say "oh yes! she's so pretty!" and then "isn't startsmart kind?" and both would agree "oh yes! she's so kind!"
Such a terrible disease.
I'm working on my goals for the month; I'll be going on just one weekend trip I think to Apple Hill and then just hunkering down until my next trip in November.

Goal for October: 18 NSD I need to keep my spending close this month as well so I can get caught up on everything that slipped last month thanks to the apartment fiasco. I'm not counting laundry or bills (rent, loan payment, phone, power). I am counting food spending and gas. I have a bad habit of running to the grocery store after junk when I'm feeling stressed/depressed/out of it. And since I live so close to work, I shouldn't need to put gas in the car except on payday unless I'm making stupid random trips. Oh, I have to share how I got stupidly happy about getting used stuff. One of my coworkers got her work anniversary gift (new pots and pans, she's been with the company 15 years, she had her choice of gifts and that's what she picked) so she brought me all of her old but still good pots and pans!! I finally have a pot big enough to boil spaghetti in! So then my sister came by this morning, walked in my kitchen, saw the box (coworker used the box from the new pans to bring me her old set) and started swearing. She had just bought me a new set of pots and pans for my Christmas present. Mizbear – you are a far better woman than I. I can't get my tush off the couch to do yoga for fat people, I can't imagine running a 5K. Walking, that I could do. P.S. Yellow font is almost impossible to read, at least on my screen. You might want to choose a different color to call attention to things. Midwestern – I secretly envy derby girls. I'd love to go to a match, but I work Saturday nights, and that's when the local events seem to be. It's on my list of things to do when I go back to school and I'm free of the evil retail job. 3cats – you never cease to amaze me with how much you can do with so little. You really are an inspiration. Sbcalimom – That's the point of goals though, isn't it. We don't always reach them, and sometimes we're not even close, but the fact that we keep working towards them is the important part. Redruby – Welcome back! Moneysquirrel – we're happy to have you anytime you can dig out from under the flurries of homework. Hope the craft show goes well for you! Start – Hugs. I know I still miss my Grandpa every day. Do what you need to do to keep her close to your heart.

I am going to go for 27NSD this month that will give me one spend day each week.
Redruby--Welcome back! We missed you. Was it you that added a new baby to the family recently? Or am I thinking of someone else?
Mid--I, too, am glad to see Fall get started. Of, course, it is October and I still have the AC come on a few times, but I can smell wood smoke outside from fireplaces in the evenings. Although, it could just as easily snow any time after the next couple of days.
My pantry challenge was successful last month. I haven't totaled the grocery expenditures for last month yet. It shouldn't be much, just a couple of trips for fresh stuff.
The bushel of apples are ALL PROCESSED and in the pantry!! A total of 25 pints and 1 quart of applesauce. All from apples the size of golf balls, never again with the tiny, tiny apples. Although they taste really good! Now to just clean up one messy and sticky kitchen.
I think the contractor will start on the bay window and front siding this week or next, I think, I hope. Tomorrow I plan to move all of the furniture away from around the window then sit back and wait.
Onyx had finally decided to forgive me. Last Friday she had her teeth cleaned and got all of her shots. I brought her home about 5 pm and the drugs hadn't completely worn off. When she did try to walk she mostly just staggered sideways, but mostly she just wanted to be held. I hate to do this to her but I don't want her to have the problems TJ did the last year of his life. Of course he was 20 years old and she is not quite four years old.
I suppose I should get started scrubbing down the kitchen. Later.

Goal of 20 NS. So far I am 1/20
I have my weigh in for my challenge tomorrow. I didn't do as well as I would have liked so we will see what the number says tomorrow.
DF has a couple of interviews so please send him your thoughts. He hates his job and these are more along the lines of what he has been doing for the last 15 years or more.
DS#1 had an attitude all weekend. Fri he went and stayed with my sister and niece. When they dropped him off both 8 YOs were being brats. Today he was not doing well either. Oh the joys of growing up.
The weather is supposed to be beautiful (and has been) for the next 3 days. I will have to figure out things to do with the kids.

reenee- As it stands- I will be walking this year. If everyone remembers- I broke my ankle or aggravated an existing break trying to run last year. It has taken me until now to get where the doctor would approve me for the 5K. Just in time for signups. Anyway- ZBear is accompanying me this year and she has no clue what "pace yourself" means. That sucks on the pots and pans. You could always pay those used pots and pans forward to a shelter or other organization. Got ya on the yellow glo font.
GOt more done at DGMs. Exhausted.

Red ruby- so sorry to hear that! My grandpa died last year the day after my g'day, I'm not looking for that anniversary this year. It's in a few weeks. October is a tough month for me, historically.
Reeneejune- great minds think alike? I concur with Mizbear, donate the older set once you're sure the new set has one of everything you need. Or donate to a friend.
I'm so burned from snorkeling! Backs of my legs, knees, back. I have two aloe plants so I've been cutting pieces strategically to rub on my skin. I won't be able to get my chiro appointment or do a lot of cardio until the skin heals more, it hurts too much. Planning on swimming and low impact cardio for another week.
Today was a NSD, yesterday I bought groceries and lunch on my way home.

Frustration - So I don't have much in the way of stuff for my kitchen, but I've been getting by with what I've got. No sooner than I wash and put away my new-to-me pots and pans, I drop my ONLY mixing bowl. It's glass. I found pieces of it 6-8 ft away from where it broke. I sat down and cried. Then I went to target and spent $16 on a set of mixing bowls. And I was thisclose to buying a new purse while I was there. But I finished the cheesecake I was making when I broke the bowl, so hopefully my evening is getting better rather than worse. (Broke the bowl drying it after washing, before I started mixing.)
mizbear - oh, I definitely plan to re-gift/donate the pots and pans to a worthy cause. It was just so amusing to see my sister all flabbergasted thinking I had bought brand new Cuisinart cookware. When in reality what I have is a set of several years old off brand stuff that's perfectly serviceable, but not up to the standard that I usually stock my kitchen with.
ses - Any ideas why your apple tree only produced tiny fruits this year? Has it produced normal sized fruits in the past?

Reenee- IRS definitely hard to stock a kitchen! Why don't you make a list of things you want and need? Then set aside $5 a week and start shopping thrift stores and consignment shops. I've found everything from place mats and cloth napkins to baskets, silverware and pans. Surprisingly cheap too. Also if you post some of your list here some of us with overflowing kitchens might be able to share or give your secret Santa some ideas On my list right now is candles for Christmas, glass bottles with stoppers, wine holders, soap pumps, metal serving trays, and picture frames. I can usually find something in those categories for $1

Morning all -- It is 44 degrees. It's raining, again. I hate the cold. My SAD is coming soon. ARGH!!!! My heat is on as I refuse to be cold in my house. At least this time of year it is not on too much, so no high heat bills. Yeah.
MK -- Enjoy your weather! Minneapolis is warmer than DC; go figure. Good luck to DF. Tell DS#1, we want the Black Hills behavior.
red ruby -- Welcome Back!
SES -- I bought Honey Crisp apples on Saturday. They are expensive, but oh well. I will enjoy them while they are in season. My grocery bill will be high this month as I am starting to stock up on items for the winter.
moneysquirrel -- I hope you get a moment to breathe.
reenee -- Congrats on your new to you pots and pans. I haven't been fascinated with the things since I was 3.
start -- hugs to you. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and I lost my paternal grandmother to the disease some 30 years ago.
honey -- How is your tooth?
mizbear -- Enjoy the weather. I want the 70s back.
Happy Monday all!

Ladies- Still in my funk, but in for October. I'm going to loosen up on the goals a little since I know this month is just so busy.
Goal 15 NS/CS 20 NEO
Yesterday was a spend and EO. Saturday was an NS & NEO so 1/15. Saturday we did go the farmer's market, but that comes out of the grocery bucket. I bought 2 pecks of apples and made one batch of sauce, tonight I'm trying Honey's (?) caramel apple pork chops, then plan on drying another bunch of apples for winter baking.
Saturday night the cops showed up at our house at 1am. They got a call from a kid on cell phone saying mom & step-dad were fighting, but didn't give an address. So they were going door to door in the area that the call came from. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep the rest of the night.
Reenee- Thanks for sharing the link to win free theater tickets. Saturday AM I opened my e-mail and found that I had won tickets to last nights performance at The Rep. (It is a great professional group with a small house so all the seats are good. We saw August:Osage County. It was billed as a dark comedy, but reminded DH & I more of Death of salesman or Glass Menagerie than a comedy, it had some funny moments, but was pretty heavy.

Goal: 15 NSDUpdate: 2/15 NSDI am changing my rules a little bit this month. I will be getting an allowance from each paycheck and using the allowance will not count as a spend day. I'm off to a good start so far .
