LONDON — Riots flared in English cities and towns Tuesday night as London waited anxiously to see if thousands of police deployed on its streets could head off the youths who had rampaged across the capital virtually unchecked for three nights. In Salford, part of greater Manchester in northwest England, rioters threw bricks at police and set fire to buildings. A BBC cameraman was assaulted. Television pictures showed flames leaping from shops and cars in Salford and Manchester, and plumes of thick black smoke billowing across roads. In London, commuters hurried home early, shops shut and many shopkeepers boarded their windows as the city prepared nervously for more of the violence that has flared in neighborhoods across the capital. Police promised to nearly triple their deployment on the streets. Get the latest updates on this story from breakingnews.com www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44070240/ns/world_news-europe/

Is this a sign of things to come to the USA?? England riots, looting and violence due to ethic tensions and unemployment is devasting... Differences in ethics, particularly individual's work ethic, seem to be a major cause of tension. Then how do you explain the discontent among our youth in Detroit, Oakland, Washington DC, Newark, East Palo Alto and other cities with high unemployment and crime rates?? Philly is probably the worse of the worst.. PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced a 9:00 p.m. weekend curfew for minors Monday, as the city continued its fight against flash mobs of violent youths that have plagued the city for the past two years. The curfew will apply to anyone under 18 in the Center City and University City areas of Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Daily News reported. As recently as July 29, a mob of youths as young as 11 gathered and attacked strangers at Center City. "We are not joking around," Nutter told the newspaper. "This is not a game. This is not fun. "If you are out wrecking havoc, if you are out causing problems, if you are out doing things you shouldn't be doing, we're going to get you off the streets." Nutter had previously set a midnight curfew for minors on Friday and Saturday night. Thanks to social networks like Twitter and Facebook, more and more flash mobs are materializing across the globe, leaving police scrambling to keep tabs on the spontaneous assemblies. "They're gathering with an intent behind it — not just to enjoy the event," Shaker Heights Police Chief D. Scott Lee said. "All too often, some of the intent is malicious." On July 4, as many as 1,000 teenagers, mobilized through social networking sites, turned out and started fighting and disrupting the town's Independence Day event. Flash mobs started off in 2003 as peaceful and often humorous acts of public performance, such as mass dance routines or street pillow fights. But in recent years, the term has taken a darker twist as criminals exploit the anonymity of crowds, using social networking to coordinate everything from robberies to fights to general chaos. In London, recent rioting and looting has been blamed in part on groups of youths using Twitter, mobile phone text messages and instant messaging on BlackBerry to organize and keep a step ahead of police. And on Sunday in Philadelphia, Nutter condemned the behavior of teenagers involved in flash mobs that have left several people injured in recent weeks. Sorry I didn't address both parts of your statement. Ethical issues I thought was the interesting thing to address. I thought the second part was common knowledge. But will meet your request for addressing it. 1) Youth are frequently discontented. 2) Gainful employment leads to contentment, lack to discontent. Youth generally have a higher rate of unemployment. Racial and ethnic differences are also a more of the situation in my mind.

Although I must admit I borrowed this OP from CNN who has been covering the riots in London and asked if we could see the same riots in the USA because of similar conditions.. Philly and Oakland are two cities close to having some serious trouble this summer.
