The real story of the US debt deal is not the triumph of the Tea Party but the death of the Socialist Left

For British conservatives, the US debt deal is a thing of beauty. . .
Under the terms of the deal, the federal government will cut spending by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years and there won’t be any corresponding increase in taxation. That is to say, the American Government has agreed to tackle its deficit by spending cuts alone. . .

The British Government, by contrast, is planning to cut its deficit through a combination of spending cuts and tax rises – and it’s cutting it by a smaller amount.

Even if the Tory Party had won an overall majority at the last election, it’s hard to imagine it adopting such a bold fiscal policy. Yet the American Government is on the verge of adopting this plan in spite of the fact that the Democrats control the Senate and the White House. . .

A year ago, American conservatives were showering David Cameron with praise for adopting such a radical approach to reducing Britain’s deficit and contrasting him unfavourably with their own spendthrift President. Now, our Prime Minister looks like a weak-kneed liberal in contrast to the hard-headed Obama. Whatever happened to the stimulus?

Most pundits are crediting this U-turn to the political muscle of the Tea Party and it’s true that President Obama would never have agreed to this deal if the Tea Party Republicans in the House of Representatives hadn’t engaged in the brinkmanship of the past few weeks. . .

But to focus on the Tea Party is to ignore the tectonic political shift that’s taken place, not just in America but across Europe.

The majority of citizens in nearly all the world’s most developed countries simply aren’t prepared to tolerate the degree of borrowing required to sustain generous welfare programmes any longer.

I think that they are giving the US more credit that we really deserve. We are just in the first rounds and the cuts aren't nearly deep enough. Also, while I think that many US citizens are going to get fed up with their tax dollars going to too generous welfare programs aimed at people who never contributed to our prosperity but just misery, there are still too many defenders of those programs like Obama and Pelosi.

We have not cut deeply enough and there will be even more battles in the near future as we wrestle with the federal levithan and its parasites.

Applying full brakes would have flipped our runaway train and caused it to crash. Slowing it is a good start and a step closer to stopping it.

I disagree. Sure, there would be pain but the longer that we do not cut spending and stop borrowing, the larger the outlays will have to be to deal with the interest. I would also suggest that getting our house in Order, which includes defeating Obama, would lead to a surge in economic growth and thus tax revenue.

Oh, for sure you're right, Ameiko, but it's the trend, the direction that is important and the trend in Europe is ahead of the trend here. They've been deeper into it and they see how socialism is destroying them more clearly than we do here. But for this congress to wrestle this administration away from the headlong plunge even a little was an amazing thing. The comments coming from the old men on the left certainly bear out the idea that they enraged at being stifled.

John Kerry said the press has a responsibility to not give the Tea Party equal coverage. Scratch a liberal, find a fascist. Truly.

I don't agree totally with the premise but it's something to think about. I think the rage is not so much at the realization they are failing as it is the fruit of their prideful immorality.

There are no spending cuts, we don't even freeze spending. The budget increases every year, and the underlying assumption is that we will grow our way out of debt and deficits not by cutting spending, but by "slowing the rate of growth of spending". But make no mistake, this is a growth of spending plan.

The truth is that you reach a point where you can't get loans any more or in our case where we were going to have to pay more for them. I just wish the above statement were true about the U.S. but I don't think it is. It seems that to many of our countryman just want something for nothing & they aren't smart enough or don't care that someone else has to pay for it.

Typical nonsense. Many conservatives, including many on this board like myself, were not happy with the Bush spending (especially his drug prescription nonsense) but we knew and were proven correct that it would be worse under a Democrat President, especially with a GOP Congress to restrain him as happened when the GOP fought back Clinton's Hillarycare and other nonsense.

Actually, the ones that are bitching are simply the silent majority that sat around for way too long think our elected assholes would eventually do the right thing.

Right now, we're saying...

And the other faction that WAS complaining about the Bush/Cheney spending are now complaining about the spending cuts...

I must have read a different version of the debt deal, I didn't really see any thing in the one I read that addresses any of our problems
