Just got a call from my mechanic. My a/c repair is not going to be as cheap as I had hoped. Process of elimination has taken everything but the evaporator out of the picture and apparently that's a $350 part that you need to get at through the glove compartment in the dashboard, so lots of labor.
Going without is not an option since it's been miserably hot here recently.
This sucks. My car is only 4 years old and only got 38K miles on it!

first, wow. I don't know how you only have 38K miles on a 4-yo car. second - is this something that could be covered by warranty? most warranties I've heard of are either 50k or 60k miles.

I only have 38K miles on a 2007 because I live 2.5 miles from work. Subaru has a 3 year, 36K mile warranty, unfortunately.

"first, wow. I don't know how you only have 38K miles on a 4-yo car."
I have 48,000 km on an 11 yr old car. (that's about 31,000 miles, I think) I walk a lot, and it's far more convenient to take public transit if you're going downtown. No place to park.

Sorry to hear that, Mich! My car is 16 years old and only has 41,000 miles on it. It's Japanese and still runs perfectly. <<wonders if this post just jinxed her car>>

I've had my Hyundai for around 9 1/2 years and it has 17,000 miles on it. I live 4 blocks away from work. Usually do my driving on the weekends. I might drive to another part of the state 2, 3 times a year to visit relatives. I feel for ya on the A/C. I was without it for 3 years because I couldn't afford to spend $1000 plus on a car that was already a POS before the air stopped working. This was the Buick Skyhawk I owned before I traded it in for a Hyundai.

I guess I drive a lot more than average. my 7-yo car has about 125k - I'd say more than half came from the first 3 years though. sorry about the warranty. hopefully it's not as painful a labor price as you're expecting.

You have a Huyndai, too? Cool! Pretty good cars, IMO. I have a Tiburon.

That sucks Mich! Should've got the extended warranty and then it wouldn't have broke! I usually don't buy extended warranties but did recently when the wife got a new Equinox.

I think I'm gonna have the opposite problem of yours Mich come winter. On mornings this summer when I've needed to use the defogger I'm getting cold air out of the driver's side zone (works correctly on the passerger side - warm/hot air) I got a Chevy that's almost 8 years old and 115,000 miles....I'm hoping to make it to 250,000 miles, but I'll settle for 200,000.

Well, I picked it up this afternoon and drove out to the mall (needed to drop off a ring that TD gave me for my birthday, to be resized). They had added more refrigerant to the a/c, so it blew cold while I was out running around. I think that they put dye in the refrigerant to see if it is expelled where they think it will be.
Then stopped at the vet's to pick up medicine for Gomez. The prednisone that I paid $35 for I could have gotten at Kroger's next door for $13. The metronidazole that was $30+ for 7 tablets was $1.75 for 10 (they get quartered). I'll get prescriptions next time.
So have to drop it off again tomorrow morning so they can take apart the dashboard to get to the evaporator. They didn't want to take the dash apart without having the part available to replace it.

Good idea! There are a lot of pharmacists here who will fill out vet prescriptions, as well. It's the exact same medication as people meds, most of the time, just smaller doses. Most vets won't tell you this....they prefer the 400% to 900% markup.

mich, I wonder if there might be a recall on your A/C. Years ago, Subaru had the highest recall rate of any make of car. They also had the highest owner satisfaction level. Maybe the two go together. Feeling like you have the luck of the Irish today? Maybe you'll be lucky and the repairs are covered by a recall.

I just checked, no a/c recall.
I've had 2 recalls since I bought my Forester and both have been dealt with. I do love my car, I'm just hoping that this problem can be resolved reasonably.

That sucks! My AC hasn't worked probably in 2 summers (had the car 3 years) and my mechanic actually declined to look at it last month when I asked him I may see if he wants to take a look in the winter when no one will be complaining about ACs. I should be able to suffer through another month or two without it, hopefully! I hope you're able to get yours fixed. My car's a 1999 Camry, has 168k miles on it. I've had it 3 years and it had 122k on it when I got it, I drive a lot.

Turned out, there are 4 o-ring seals on the evaporator that failed - causing the leak of refrigerant. Cost of parts - $50 (more refrigerant and 4 x $1 o-rings). Cost of labor to tear apart my dashboard- $380. Add an oil change and yesterday's tab was $448.
Far better than the $700+ that I was quoted if the evaporator failed, but it still pisses me off that a freaking cheap ass o-ring could cause such a huge labor bill.
Cold a/c - priceless!
<especially with 95°+ days in the forecast>

Whew!! Glad it wasn't worse! Our last big a/c repair on my Suburban (with dual zone air) was $700 at the beginning of summer last year. Beginning of this summer, it wasn't working again, but turned out to be an easy $40.00 fix (broken switch?). Just last weekend, we thought the fan was going out on the rear air as it was making a horrible noise. Right now, we're in 100-110+ degree heat (for the last 34 days), with forecasts of the same through next weekend, so a/c is a must in our area. DH pulled the housing apart to see if he could fix it himself and found a piece of trash lodged in there (which was the cause of the noise - the fan rubbing against the paper). Seems the return air vent sucked up the trash. Thank god DH is good with things like this!! We know exactly which kid was eating this particular item associated with the trash......damn kids!!

I would have raised hell with the dealer over the A/C unit and demanded to talk to a factory rep. Expired warranty or not, some of this stuff should not fail.
A friend of my has a 2004 Envoy, as does my wife, and they had a problem with the engine head and for sure the warranty was well past expiration. GM said something like $3K to fix the valve train problem. I told her the same as above about raising hell about a valve train failure at 70K miles. Anyway, the factory rep OK'd a repair and she ended up paying $1K for her end of the agreement. I think she could have gotten it for free but she was happy with the reduction given.
