I know where we can cut the deficit . . . By Rachel Rose Hartman | The Ticket – 20 hrs ago Joe Biden is a landlord to the Secret Service. That's right. The Washington Times reports that Biden has collected $13,200 from the Secret Service since April to rent a cottage adjacent to his Wilmington, Del., home and continues to charge the agency rent. The Secret Service has agreed to pay $2,200 per month for use of the house in order to provide security to the Biden family, according to Edwin M. Donovan, special agent in charge at the Secret Service's Office of Government and Public Affairs in Washington. (By the way, that's no discount on the rent--the Times reports that's the amount paid by the previous tenant.) Some of the watchdog types interviewed by the Times questioned whether the agreement is appropriate, especially given Biden's deficit reduction leadership role. Leslie Paige, spokeswoman for Citizens Against Government Waste, said there's no question Biden deserves protection, "but this arrangement seems bizarre to me." "You'd think the vice president, who shepherded the deficit committee, would think twice about charging the Secret Service rent. Why would he need the money? I don't get it." The agency says it is a unique situation. "We don't pay rent to any other protectees," Donovan told The Ticket, but he added that the agency had wanted to be in close proximity to the vice president's house. Officials had been renting other properties in the area when Biden's cottage tenant moved out. So, the Secret Service reached out. "The cottage was an existing rental property at the time the Secret Service signed its lease," Kendra Barkoff, press secretary for the vice president, informed the newspaper and wrote in an email to The Ticket.

"The cottage was an existing rental property at the time the Secret Service signed its lease," Kendra Barkoff, press secretary for the vice president, informed the newspaper and wrote in an email to The Ticket. It's unusual but lets look at it more closely. First, Biden is not a wealthy man, not poor but according to his income tax returns definitly not wealthy. He has a large family , some of who he may still be responsible for. He had a rental property that he was able to get a return on, it was the SS who reached out and suggested they rent the property to be closer to the man, [yes he is entitled and should have protection for himself and family, being who he is and how protection has been given previouse VP] and if the SS was paying rent for other properties in the area and then just switched over to this one , it being a better property for them to do the job, then so be it. He is entitled to get rent from the property, no more but no less then he was before..IMHO. If he was not VP, but a Senator , or retired from the Senate, he still , as long as he owned the property, had been in the position to rent it, so why should he be penalized and lose that legal income, just because he took on the job of VP.. Methinks some one has a axe to grind, because of personal feelings , just trying a bit of dissing, as if there is not enough here now, rather then really coming up with a honest discussion of a normal transaction, in other words , getting personal because of the politics of the man. IMHO of course.

IMHO, that is key right there. The Secret Service was currently renting in the area, the property was already an existing rental that came available and the Secret Service reached out to Biden, not the other way around. As long as the rent is in-line with other similar properties in the area, I don't have a problem with it. Biden should be able to make money on his investment property just like any other citizen in this country.

I thought Democrats were against people making money? That's a silly assumption. If nobody is making money, who will they demonize and steal wealth from to redistribute? They just support different wealthy people than the right does. Same slaves...different masters.

I consider myself "right" and I have no problem with him renting a rental home to the secret service as long as it's at market value which it seems to be.

The prez, vice prez and other top govt officials should be protected as needed and at what ever cost necessary.
Is this an outrage, no. But a good thread topic...LOL

Come on folks - it's trashy to charge the Secret Service so they can take a bullet for you. And I'm a registered Democrat! The Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden also released their 2010 federal income tax returns, as well as state income tax returns for both Delaware and Virginia. They filed joint federal and Delaware income tax returns. Dr. Biden filed a separate non-resident tax return for the state of Virginia. Together, they reported an adjusted gross income of $379,178.The Bidens paid $86,626 in total federal taxes for 2010. They paid $14,479 in Delaware income taxes and $3,515 in Virginia income taxes. The Bidens contributed $5,350 to charity, in both monetary and in-kind donations. If they can't afford to let go of 24k of rental income before taxes they should head over to YM!

Ok - maybe they really should head over to YM. They have a net worth that's less than their annual income. Hope he can cash out when he's out of office.

I am guessing, and I will defer to the tax experts here, that the IRS will impute rental income. Just a guess.

actually are on agreement on a topic...Joe, go for it..more power to you . ;D There really is nothing to get upset about. Let's look at the facts: - Biden already owned the home prior to the current rental. - Biden had the house rented prior to the current rental. - The SS was already renting other property before the current rental. - The rental unit became available when Biden's tenant left. - The SS themselves approached Biden about renting the house. Now, the only point of contention left is the $2,200/month rent. Is that fair market value? Who knows. If not, I would agree Biden needs to reduce the rent so it is comperable to other area rental units, but certainly not free. No matter the tenant, Biden deserves fair market return on his investment the same as any other American citizen....whether he can "afford" to give it up or not.

It's a little untoward IMHO but I see it as a SS call rather than some unethical attempt to get some extra money.
As a gesture from someone who keeps whining that people so give more tot he government, I think he should at least discount the rent but I also understand if it would hurt him too badly. That said, this is a good example of liberals not walking their talk and that they should hold their tongues before casting aspersions on others.
