"The idea seems to be that if the House GOP refuses to raise the debt ceiling, a default crisis or gradual government shutdown will ensue, and the public will turn en masse against . . . . Barack Obama," McCain said, quoting the Journal article. "The Republican House that failed to raise the debt ceiling would somehow escape all blame. Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced-budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the tea-party Hobbits could return to Middle Earth having defeated Mordor." "This is the kind of crack political thinking that turned Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell into GOP Senate nominees," McCain added, still reading from the article." news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/john-mccain-unloads-tea-party-200836239.html

So ugonow why do you feel the need to call him Magoo? We all have nicknames for people in the opposite party even if we only think them. I know I always think of President Obama as Bomben Obama the socialist.

So ugonow why do you feel the need to call him Magoo? Cultural reference. (should actually be "Oh Magoo, you've done it again!". Think the "Ouch" was something frequently(?) added at the end.)

I think the "Magoo" of the thread title is the current GOP members of Congress, not McCain. To play with it farther, the Tea Party is Magoo's nose, and the eyeglasses are the more traditional GOP members of the Republican Party. (Arguably as to the truth of it, but I think that is the analogy being drawn.)

I don't know, not seeing it. One of the main themes of The Lord of the Rings is that the only way to deal with an objective evil is to oppose it -- accommodation leads inexorably to defeat. In the book, the characters who go along are first corrupted and then defeated. What is the "objective evil" this is being opposed?

So a society based on consumption is evil? If it becomes gluttonous, then yes.

I don't, I think of the speaker as the speaker, it's his title, or his name and for the school yard BS, guess i have been away from the school yard to long...sorry to disappoint you on the names.. Possible it was my service experience, a lot of "Sirs " respect for the position..and in most cases the responsibilities given to them.

It wasn't Magoo. It was McGee, as in the Fibber McGee radio program and for a short run after TV was born. The characters were a country couple, Fibber and Molly McGee. They were trying to fit in with modern society and she was way ahead of him. Fibber would always pull off some kind of social faux paus and Molly would always droll out to him, almost under her breath: There you are, McGee. You've done it again".

They are on old time radio, satellite all the time. I never licked the show back in the day but it's ok now..she plays a lot of different parts, charecters who show up at the houise every show..more innocent times, same gags, especially opeing the closet, all stuff falling out. Announcer as a memeber of the cast and always goes into a routine of how great "Johnson Wax " is..their sponser for decades.
