This article reveals something I didn't know, just scroll down to the beginning of the article on dog ownership...seems in one case security pulled a weapon on a dog.. With all their other problems , it seems the authoritys in Iran are not Dog lovers..not sure about cats. Sorry there Molly... ------------------------------------------- www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tehranbureau/2011/07/conflicting-reports-on-kurdish-militant-clash-tehran-goes-to-the-dogs.html---------------------------------------------- [Click on link to read article, scroll down to article on dogs] ---------------------------------------------- "Despite Iran's legal prohibition on the purchase of dogs as pets and Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi's fatwa last year condemning their ownership, the influence of Western media is making the pet dog an ever-more desirable Iranian status symbol, reports the Wall Street Journal's Farnaz Fassihi. For some time, couriers have been bringing in dogs for sale via passenger airline flights, falsely claiming the animals as their own personal pets. When authorities caught onto the scheme last year and raised the airport fee for bringing in a dog from $50 to $800, some sellers turned to smuggling canines overland via tour buses and trucks from Armenia and Turkey."

To the Shi'a, dogs are not clean and are not to be kept as pets. There are a lot of rules about keeping them for security. There are no such rules, that I know of, pertaining to cats. Since Iran has a Shi'a majority, they consider pet dogs haram while the Saudis and other Sunni do not.

Since the country is Shia I can understand their stand however, it seems that instead of being so forceful on it , it would be better to just have it one of those laws on the books to crack down on those who flaunt it, and ignore those who might have a pet and keep it under control and basically low key just enjoying it as a pet. Thus no Dog Shows, lots of parading with in public places, letting run loose..this way , not upsetting the sensibilities of those who would be offended yet allowing those who enjoy the pets and are possible not as observant on all the religious edicts which I am sure are many on many of the religious rules and practices, same as here in the states.

Yet another reason why I'm glad I don't live in Iran.

Basically, dezi, they usually do ignore it; particularly, in the larger cities. However, every once in awhile the PTB decide to crack down on something. This time it's dogs. It'll be a big deal for awhile (since an Ayatollah decided to make it his mission of the moment) then die down. In the meantime, those who can afford to own dogs, and want to own dogs, will own dogs. It's par for the course in Iran.

Hee! As long as they aren't pork, the Iranians and Saudis I've known have loved hotdogs! They liked hamburgers and french fries, as well. Neither will eat dogs of the canine variety, however. Fortunately, I never serve that in my home so didn't have to go through rejection.
