toughtimes,
Yes Ronald Reagan and the problems with Poland were instrumental in the failure of Russian Communism. And posible China and Russia would have fallen out. But that was essentially 20 years after VietNam. In the meantime Communism in Southeast Asia went no further than VietNam. Well, that's not entirely true. The Communist Vietnamese tried to take over Camboodia too, after we left but, the Khmer Rouge there may have had more to do with ending Communist expansion in that part of the world than the west did. Pol Pot kicked the Vietnamese butts out of Cambodia and slaughtrered anybody who was even a relative of anybody who was sympathetic to Communism. As I understand it, that amounted to about 2 million Cambodians.
The last place to look for historical accuracy is Hollywood, but the movie "The killing Fields" is entirely set in Cambodia. The star was a Cambodian who had escaped somehow. I don't know his story, and sadly he was later killed by a mugger.
I always thought it was all Hollywood until I saw a documentary that was done by a Cambodian. He was able to interview some of the Khmer Rouge participants, including Pol Pot's number two man. Sorry I can't recall his name. He said the rule was simple: Be a Cambodian or be a dead communist sympathizer, social standing, age, sex and ethnic background notwithstanding. . . . .
In any event, other than inside VietNam, I don't believe Communism is a threat in Southeast Asia today.

toughtimes, I believe China may have moved it's sights to the Western Hemisphere. Didn't Obama recently go to Brazil and broker a 10 Billion dollar loan deal that involved China and drilling for oil off our own coast?
And the train s going by here have Chinese inspection stickers on the container vans. They are apparently off loaded in Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico and shipped by rail over the new railroad that was built for that purpose. It will eventually be part of the NAFTA North American Union superhighway and rail system. I understand the US centerpoint will be in Kansas City.

Call me an old Cold warrior, but what about our dear creditor China? That is a Communist government as far as I recall and I remember those wonderful lines from dear old Lenin: "The Capitalists will sell us the rope we use to hang them... Unfortunately, it is worse. We are buying the rope on credit and wrapping it around our necks. Ask the many Chinese in NYC who fled that regime. Cultural revolution anyone? ...kinda makes this quote by Jane Fonda all the more ironic: "Like tens of thousands of other Americans, I'm extremely concerned these days about the betrayal of everything that my country stands for –- about the betrayal of our flag, about the betrayal of the very precepts upon which our country was founded: equality for all people, liberty, and freedom."

How many times have we heard this before? And from how many different people? This time it just happens to be Jane Fonda. "Bottom line, this has gone on far too long, this spreading of lies about me! None of it is true. NONE OF IT!" said Fonda. "I love my country. I have never done anything to hurt my country or the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for us. I do not understand what the far right stands to gain by continuing with these myths. www.cnsnews.com/news/article/jane-fonda-i-have-never-done-anything-hu
