Is anyone here interested in the News International scandal? I'm in the UK so it is big news here. News of the World has closed, Rebekah Brooks has finally had to resign, and she and both Murdoch's have agreed to appear before a Parliamentary Select Committee (which James and Rupert initially declined to do).
Do you think this will impact on the global business? News Corps has a lot of influence on global politics and public opinion, so if the empire falls then I think this could have huge ramifications.

I've been watching it, shandi; however, I think a lot of people in the US won't be as interested because they don't know that much about News of the World. Some will be familiar, though. As to it impacting global business, it may well do as more is learned about who knew what, and when. I'd read this morning our FBI may get involved to investigate the possiblity of hackings into the telephones of 9/11 victims. It's certainly an ugly mess, at this point, but I don't think we know enough yet to know what the end result might be. Like you, I think there will certainly be ramifications globally. Nice to have you posting here. It's always fun to have posters from other parts of the world add in their two cents (or pence ).

Not to worry Senators Rocketfeller and Boxer are thinking about holding senate hearings to find out what is going on at Murdock's Empire.. they would love to shut down Fox and some of his other conservative leaning news media subsidiaries...
And Murdock's ex wife just resigned without accepting any blame for this fiasco which included hacking into the 9/11 victims families personal accounts....

Julian Assange engaged in hacking and what not and was billed as a folk hero.

My concern is that the potential threat goes well beyond the invasion of privacy of private citizens - whereas, the Assange thing has had a more whistleblowing slant. The extra concerns rise from a senate hearing some time ago where, described was the cornering of the wheat market by Russia some time in the 70's. - they were intercepting phone calls of people that would diseminate publicly the official published results - thus getting inside info to gain control of the wheat market. Today, with the technological advancements and access that the conglomerants (like the Murdock empire) - could use this info for numerous end results - my same concerns go to the huge financial institutions which are IT $$ capable$$ to handle data collection that may well exceed Constitutional limitations and state legal constraints to manipulate markets. I am also concerned that these intrusions by privatly motivated and dollar capable companies may extend well into the range of state and national security. Just thought I would share a bit of paranoia - although the tech is available.

"A law enforcement official in New York said the FBI was looking into allegations that employees of News Corp. tried to hack into the telephones of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.
The decision to step in was made after U.S. Rep. Peter King, Sen. Jay Rockefeller and several other members of Congress wrote FBI Director Robert Mueller demanding an investigation, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly."-------
Peter King is trying to censor conservative news outlets?

Not really Senator Jay Rocketfeller is the lead guy in the congress who said they would get to the bottom of this latest news scandal involving Murdoch. And the congress may have him appear again before them to answer the basic question: "Who knew what and when in News Corp?".....so hold your political fire for a few more weeks and don't worry your New York Senator is in charge of his mess..

I have only in a general way heard about this story so I won't comment on it.
As a general comment I would say that what they call the news today should be required to be called "slanted commentary". Nothing anymore is "just the facts". I get the impression that nothing hits the air unless they believe that they can control public opinion about it (which to a large extent they do). Another just sad moment in our history.

You have to believe Murdoch wants to see Obama defeated and GE wants to see him re elected so naturally they will slant the news to their advantage, i would assume??

Hey if anyone is going to listen in on people's cell phones it's going to be the US government! No one else better dare to even try... For me, I had never heard of this news outlet so I haven't been paying this issue that much attention...

Murdoch and his son have to appear before the British Parliament and answer their questions...Murdoch's vast empire is now in jeopardy as this scandal plays out...and of course Liberals in this country would love to see Fox News be eliminated or be at risk of closing.. IMHO

Yep, dj. That's what I read, as well. Seems they've been very close for over 50 years. While I knew of Hinton, I wasn't aware he was born in Britain. He's kinda stayed under the radar as far as I'm concerned; until, of course this whole can of worms got loose!

JKAPP: A government computer has been listening to your cell phone calls for some time looking for conversations that could be terriorist communications. It is keyed to look for certain words.

This is still claiming scalps here. Rebekah Brooks has now been arrested. The Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Paul Stephenson, has resigned. Our PM is talking about recalling Parliament (they are on summer recess) to debate the scandal. He himself is under pressure about his seeming lack of judgement over his hiring of Andy Coulson as his Director of Communications, and his close friendship with Rebekah Brooks.

I read this morning that Mr. Murdoch is to be questioned by Parliament on Tuesday, shandi. Sounds like he paid out some money to victims before this whole thing came to light, and that doesn't look good at all. Curiouser and curiouser, eh?

America's total vengeance ADHD has just passed the Casey Anthony phase and is moving into the Rupert Murdoch phase. I doubt that the bloodlust will be sated.

Curiouser and curiouser, eh? just read that there was some INSANE amount of hush money paid out by NewsCorp last year: like $2/3B??? ok, i am using the term liberally. this includes "out of court settlements for people and companies who claimed that they had their rights violated"
