Last night we had a nasty hail storm. Quarter size hail that lasted for at least 15 minutes. We don't care about any cosmetic damage to our truck, but our main car is still titled in my grandfathers name and I want to keep value/condition on that vehicle as high as possible.
We have a $1000 deductible for auto and home. I figure we'll have someone come look at the car, roof (and maybe the siding--chances are they're both fine, but if there is damage I want to know).
What do you all recommend to keep costs as low as possible, and at what point do you tell the insurance company? The thought of paying even the deductible is pretty disappointing right now. We've had a lot of expenses this summer and aren't anywhere close to where I thought we'd be in terms of mid year savings.

rae, my BIL, who teaches auto shop, and does a bit of body work on the side, had hail damage to one of his cars. He used one of the paint-less dent repair outfits to repair the damage. In his case, insurance covered all or most of the cost. The paint-less approach was much quicker and less labor intensive than the bang on it, bondo it, sand it, paint it, clear it approach that is used for more major body work. BIL was very satisfied with the quality of the work that was done.

rae - are you in CO? We had major rain this week and lots of hail last night. I second tskeeter on the suggestion. If that doesn't work out, just contact your insurance company.

insmoneymaven--I am in Colorado. ;D I'm totally loving the rain, when my basement isn't flooding, and my property isn't being pummeled.
I'm so grateful DH was dragging his feet about going for a walk/jog last night. I can't imagine if we had been caught out in that with the kiddo!

That's funny--I'm in SW Denver, and everyone I've talked to has been shocked we got hail. I was starting to think it was just our little pocket.

DSister lives near Hampden and I25 and they got it too. Agreed on taking out the LO's - I saw those clouds and warnings about lightning, so we didn't venture out.

I was walking home in that storm... it was nasty! In Lakewood, it lasted at least 30 minutes. My backyard is a disaster and I'm too afraid to look in the crawl space to see if it's flooded.

If you want to get the car fixed, go get a couple estimates on your own. It may not even be enough to meet your deductible. There's no point in submitting a claim if the payout will be little to nothing.

Rick, I saw that the other day that heat would make the dents pop back out and the roof will fix itself. Are you fooling us?

That would be great if some of the dents will pop out on their own!

then if you aren't fooling us, why would an insurance company pay a claim on something that really isn't ruined?

Just moved to Mississippi and I25 and we were just getting home when the hail started. Sat in the car to wait it out. At least it wasn't big enough to damage the car by us. This last week with all the thunderstorms has been fun to watch.
