I agree failing banks should have been permitted to fail. In fact every measure since TARP designed to re-inflate the housing bubble is just making the situation worse and prolonging the inevitable. We can't privatize profits and socialize risk. The Republicans CAN win the game of "chicken" if they're serious, and they don't view it as a game. Because it's not. This is life or death for our country. If they let Obama win, America loses. Do you even understand that the so called "republicans" which you are putting all of your faith on, helped to enact TARP, and part of the gigantic deficit that we have today? Ahhhhhhhhhh. And for that nugget of wisdom, you get [image] Thank you cereb!

PBP, won't like this since I think I read it in the New York Times but a big part of the problem is there are at least three factions - democrats, regular republicans, and the new zealous tea party elect. According to the article, the new tea party elect aren't willing to settle for a balanced budget and want to lower taxes and shrink government at the same time. Given the deficit, its bad timing and its likely the tea party electees will be the reason the GOP fails to do the most viable thing which is come up with a balanced budget the majority of both houses can live with. The GOP controls the house, the Democrats the senate.
TARP, initially passed by Bush was the biggest and most recent show of privitazing gains and socializing risk. Thats what the big corporate donors want including some industry roundtables which I recently read about. They'll imply they want the opposite - smaller government, but they make the big money and minimize their losses by increasing government size in their favor.

McConnell Plan is Weakness- Voters Ready to Bolt
I am not so sure that voters are ready to bolt or not... The McConnell Plan or the "Hail Mary" Plan may be the only option Obama has to prevent a default which he spoke to yesterday at his press conference...so behind the scenes the congressional leaders are trying to work this out with their caucuses....I think the Hail Mary may just save Obama's presidency which he has on the line if our government should indeed default..

The tea partiers are as dumb as "W", who pushed through tax cuts while starting two wars!
I suspect that Barry will emerge as someone who has outsmarted the Pubs, when this is over. He doesn't want the "cuts" he professes, but is just using them to allow the pubs to do a great job of painting themselves into a corner. They are obliging. In the end, Barry gets the increase in the debt ceiling, with few if any strings attached.

And why exactly should the GOP bail out Obama's failed presidency at the expense of the country? Are we really going to sacrifice America on the altar of "The One"?

I don't have a clue except to say Obama has been forced to do something even if it is wrong he will do something just to save his presidency because you have to know he is losing sleep worrying about what a default will do to his name....
