Lulu - I'm so sorry to hear of your DHs diagnosis. Please come here if you need to vent, I know many of us have had to deal with cancer or a loved one with cancer.
Lisa - yeah, his mother simply sounds rude. I know cultural differences can be difficult but it's NO ONE's ethnic culture to sit in a driveway and text demands. I have older relatives who would have wanted to smuggle out centerpieces or cake in their purse, but that's how things were done back in the day. Bringing uninvited guests and texting demands after the event? No. I would try to remove yourself from her drama amoving forward. Don't engage in her text messages, be civil when you see her but don't share too much, etc. Hopefully there isn't much conflict moving forward and SIL learns to manage it. Welcome chalupa!
Congrats to everyone else with debt payments, there's been a lot of movement!
Not much new here. Doing ok on not spending too much, but rent is going up $40/mo and I just don't know where that money is going to come from.
Ran into the ex Saturday. Of all the million bars in the city, in an area I rarely hang out, we have to be at the same one? He texted me at 5am saying I looked great and it was nice to see me and hopefully we can meet for a drink . I assume he was drunk, although given his last series of late-night texts, this one was actually polite, so maybe not. Who knows? I responded that we could as friends, but I wasn't looking to rekindle anything, and I haven't heard back. I don't even know why I said as friends....we're not going to be friends.

How do you guys decide how much to spend for groceries?
We are a family of 4. I aim for 500/mo. including all toiletries and cleaning supplies. This seems like more than enough, but since May we have only been able to manage this one time.
July has been awful. It makes me sick to think about how much money was wasted.

We have a grocery budget challenge out on the main board if you want to join us Have you tracked for a few months to see where you really are? Seems easiest to do it that way, then back in to where you want to be once you have the numbers and know where you can make the cuts.

I think I am going to join, I need the accountability!
We usually go over by $150. I went to Aldi for the first time last night and spent $23 for 2 full bags of groceries, which would have cost me double at the other store I shop at. We need to eliminate all eating out, cutting back isn't enough. I am going to try to make my own baby food this time. We also need to cut back on beer and wine.

Good morning Chalupa! It's just my husband, my 3 year old DD, and me - BUT, I budget for $35/person/week just to get a number. Obviously DD doesn't eat as much as we do (unless it's pancakes . So if I had a 4 person family, it would be $35 x 4 x 4 = $560. Maybe that extra $60 will be the cushion you need? At least while you're figuring out a budget for your family - you may need to tweak it. That's just what I do and it seems to work for us. Good luck!

Dizzy, good morning Thank you!! I am not sure how I came up with 500 in the first place, but was not sure if that amount needed to be higher, or we needed to tighten up. I am going to add in the 60 dollar buffer and see how we do! How do you handle buying in bulk when it comes to your monthly budget. I am sure I can get a much better deal on paper towels, toilet paper, etc. but that would be a huge hit all at once.

@ Chalupa - actually, we rarely buy in bulk unless we have an extra large paycheck. I know that in the long run it's more expensive, but to keep things under budget we try to buy enough to get us through every two weeks since that's how we're paid.

I think I get caught up with good deals and that is part of the reason I go over. I have 3 unopened venus razor cartridges in my hall closet because I had a coupon for buy 2 get 1 free. That was a 30 dollars out of the budget and I did not even use them that month. I think that I will start buying enough to get by and see how that works.

Chalupa - another thing I do is still buy in bulk, but buy online. Walmart.com is where we get our bulk supplies (TP, diapers & wipes) and I just order every 4-6 months when we need it. There's free shipping for orders over $50 and then I am not tempted by other random good deals I see in the store Take stock of what you have and then see what you really need going forward. And hold on to those coupons until sales come around to get the most bang for your buck. There's a Grocery Challenge thread on the main page where the ladies know how to seriously coupon. Usually if you hold on to the inserts for 3-4 weeks, the old coupons will match up with new sales and you get awesome deals.

Sam- Yesterday I ordered 3 boxes of diapers from Walmart to qualify for the free shipping. Next time I will order 2 and toilet paper and paper towels instead I was really excited that the Walmart brand is so inexpensive compared to Pampers, and they work really well for our little guy! We used to have a store that doubled manufacture coupons, but they were sold . I am so impressed with your grocery budget! Do you have a separate category for household items? I am going to organize my coupons so I can hold on to them to get the best deals.

I used to do some extreme couponing, so I have a TON of stuff right now that we are working through. I make our laundry detergent ($26 for a year's worth), and we don't use many disposable items other than diapers and tp.

Chalupa - I would use A Full Cup to organize coupons and sales at the drug stores. Walgreens and CVS actually have better deals than Walmart if you learn how to play the game. As for coupons, I keep the whole insert and file them by week (it's printed in super tiny print on the spine of the insert, but I write it with marker on the front too). There's a database at AFC where you type in what you are looking for (schick, tide, etc) and it tells you which week the coupon came. That way there's no cutting until you need to and makes things a lot easier. I just got a hanging file box to put them in to keep them out of the way. AFC has some great tutorials on how to get started! There was a time when Pantene shampoo was "better than free" - I paid less than $1 for 3 bottles after coupons and then got CVS store cash back for $5 or so, ended up making me money. I ran the deal several times and ended up with over 50 bottles of shampoo. We used shampoo for our hand soap dispensers and body wash And when the holiday drives came around I had plenty to donate. We probably still have 15 bottles left. All the extra CVS bucks I got I held on to for a couple of weeks and used them in a big diaper deal to get them for about $2/pack after coupons and store cash. So it is possible to stock up, you just have to wait and do it at the right time. If you want to get into the drugstore game, I recommed setting aside a budget for it. Say $10/month. It won't seem like much but it really is if you plan well!! For that you can get pretty much all of your health items and cleaning supplies, plus several boxes of cereal or snacks each month.

Sam: I love the advise on $10 a month for the drugstore game . I used to be a Walgreens only kind of girl but CVS was the only place that had mega m&m's for little seahorse and they had buy one get one free with a card so I got a card. I've used it twice and I've had it for a month. I hadn't thought about getting cleaning items there..I always just get that at the grocery store.

Sam- Thank you I am going to check our their website, it sounds nice and easy. I love your idea about not clipping them right away. Right now I have random coupons everywhere! I am surprised that you get such great deals at CVS and Walgreens. I had always assumed that they were more expensive because of the convenience factor. I will start looking through their ads! You are impressive! That is amazing that you are able to make your own detergent for that price! Is it mild? My daughter has very sensitive skin so I have been using generic free and clear soap. In the past I have used pocket your dollars to find deals for free groceries (or close to it). She takes store flyers (aldi, walgreens, target, cvs, etc.) and matches up the sales prices with coupons. I think I will start using AFC and PYD so they can do all the hard work for me

Ugh, the vet appointment cost $1032 last night, so my debt total will be going up. I put it on my non-racing card so I can focus on paying that first and not getting my payment allocation messed up by putting it all on one card (my current debt is at 0% from a BT). I'll pull some out of my ING account, but not all of it. Ugh. Need to start saving better for vet visits, I was totally unprepared for this one, it was just their annual but it snuck up on me.
I find that CVS cleaning supplies are higher cost than Target (I don't do walmart, costco) but about the same as the grocery stores around here. But if you do coupons and extra bucks they come out cheaper. Sign up for CVS email, I get 20% or 30% off coupons almost every week and they can be combined with the coupons from the machine in the store.
Groceries are still my enemy. There's no possible way I could fill one bag, let alone 2 from Aldi for $23. I just don't find myself saving much there anymore, I miss those days, for a while I was a big fan. I did much better this month than last month, but still above my $250 goal. I spent too much towards the end with convenience items/lunches (I'd just go to the salad or hot bar at the grocery store for lunch when working from home, and of course pick up a few unnecessary things while there). I need to add final numbers but I know it was at least $100 less than last month, thanks to the accountability of the Grocery Budget challenge thread!

AFC does the deal matchups too, and you can typically find them 2-3 weeks in advance It's nice to let someone else do the work and then plan your shopping trips out! The detergent "recipe" I use is very mild. We've not had any issues with it. It's 2c Borax + 2c washing soda (not baking soda!) + 1 bar of white Zote (found in the laundry aisle at Walmart). I chunk up the soap bar with a knife since it's fairly soft, then put the pieces in my blender along with the powder ingredients & blend until it's all mixed. Then I use about 1 tablespoon of powder per load of laundry, adding it to the washer before I put the clothes in. I did mix up a giant batch using 2 boxes of borax, 3 boxes of washing soda, and 10 bars of zote. Blended in small batches, then mixed in a 5 gallon bucket, and then portioned out into ziplock bags to store. SIL and I split it and probably each have 500 loads worth for $13 and some change. Be aware that this also doesn't have the optical brighteners and things that most commercial detergents have, so whites will look a bit dingy after awhile. I typically add a scoop of oxygen bleach (generic oxi-clean - get it at the dollar store) to every other whites load to combat that problem. Line-drying clothes outside will also help keep the whites bright. And it's free

Sorry about the surprise vet bill, chicg Glad that the grocery budget challenge helped though! I need to add up our numbers once we get to my next payday and see where we are at. DH decided he wanted all of our accounts at one bank, so I've been making the change for our main bill-pay account to move it over. It's a big pain in the butt but I believe I have it done with 1) all bills getting paid and 2) nothing getting overdrafted! DH has gotten some big payments in so our savings account is nicely padded to account for my maternity leave. Which is great timing, considering we found out yesterday that Baby J has to come early. So far he's fine, but I've developed ICP and it becomes very risky for him after 37 weeks. So they are monitoring him closely and we are hoping that we make it to 37 weeks without him needing to come any sooner. But that means he will be here in just 8.5 weeks!!!!! All of a sudden it seems very, very real that we are having another kid.

Sam- Thanks for the laundry detergent recipe! Does Walmart carry washing soda as well? I am sorry to hear about your ICP, I hope that you are able to make it to 37 weeks. It is good that you and your baby are being monitored closely. My son was born at 36 weeks and luckily did not spend any time in the ICU. Chicg- I will sign up with CVS, thank you for that suggestion Groceries are really hard for me as well. I have already spent 150 for August and its not even the 1st! 100 less is a great improvement, way to go! Sorry about your vet bill. We have water damage from a leaky roof that we are in the process of fixing right now. The estimate was less than I was expecting, but it makes me sad to add on to our debt. I was very excited for the extra pay period in August, but our escrow account came back short for the 3rd time since we have lived here. We need to pay an additional 600 dollars and our monthly payment is going up 30 dollars. Ugghh.

Chalupa - yep, all ingredients are at Walmart in the laundry aisle. Washing soda and Borax are $3-4/box and Zote is $1/bar. There is a pink zote and a blue zote too but I use white because it doesnt have dyes. DDs little friend is allergic to red dyes so we try to avoid them at our house too when possible.

Consolidation of the WIRR Boards Just wanted to let people know that we’re planning to consolidate the WIRR regions into a single group/thread. This will help facilitate more discussion & accountability, and the updates. I’m not sure when this will happen, but it should be sometime in the near future. More to come!

I was wondering about that just yesterday, Minnesota. Kind of sad our group has dwindled so much that we are combining again, but looking forward to the larger group & discussions!! Just a suggestion - maybe there can be one locked/pinned thread for the captains to post the running updates and then another thread for discussion and posting? That way we can easily find the updates for reference without losing them to conversation.

Serious this time [2]: 8/1/14 $6,704 (12/9/2012 $11,021 MPT 266)
Made a bit more progress on the race. This includes two debts I'm racing, and of the one debt I'm really focusing on, the balance is getting lower and lower. It's fun to watch.
I have extra income coming in this month (from freelance work and the stuff I've been selling on eBay. I also have extra expenses due to two vacations I've got scheduled this month. So we'll see how much extra, if anything, I can throw at the race.

Minnesota- Thank you! I live in MN as well We have three 0% BT's expiring in November. The plan is to try and pay them off before the promotional rates expire. We have a couple cards expiring in January that we will not be able to pay off in time, but we are hoping to shuffle them to another 0% offer and continue to pay down the balances as quickly as possible.

hehe, thanks for the left digit change congrats MInnesota, but unfortunately that's going to be going back up. I'm taking some money from savings to pay part of the vet bill, but I've had to charge about $1300 at the vet over this last weekend so it will go up a bit.
So, the expensive vet visit led to labwork that shows my boy cat Dexter has stage 3 kidney failure. I'm a devastated cat momma who is doing everything possible to help his kidneys function and keep him happy right now. We have a treatment plan for now that includes prescription food, sub-q fluids and some other medicine once we can get his phosphorus level down. I'm also going to another Dr. for a holistic consult for him, and for preventative herbs for my girl. From what I've been able to add up, his meds and food is about $100/mo, not sure about the herbs yet, plus all the extra vet visits/labwork to monitor his condition. oy vey, I don't know where this money is going to come from, but I'll be reworking my budget tonight, thinking about what to pull from savings to get my cc debt down and really focus on tracking my spending and staying in my new budget. I'll charge whatever I have to for him and pay it off as I can, that's about all I can do right now without depleting savings. I was going to take a solo trip this fall, or explore the idea of working remotely for a month in central America (rent a place and just work from there) but until I know how he'll respond to treatment, I can't possibly plan a trip right now.
Ugh, just ONCE I'd like to catch a freaking break. I know we all face ups and downs but it seems like I constantly get clobbered with the downs part and no happy or good things to help get me through all the tough ones.
