Chicg: I don't post on this thread but read it regularly. I am sorry about your cat. I hope he responds well to treatment. I can't imagine how heartbroken you must be. And I love the name, it is my son's name

chicg: I'm so sorry about Dexter . My cat Brownie is on prescription k/d for her kidneys. She is borderline on having kidney issues but seems to be doing well on the new food. I researched her food and it has a 50/50 shot of working. The vet tested her twice and then felt we'd be ok until her next yearly checkup. Brownie is 13 and I noticed her hearing is starting to go. It is so hard to see our pets go thru illnesses.

chicg: Oh, I am so, so sorry to hear about Dexter. We, unfortunately, went through the very same thing with our kitty cat last year. Kidney failure seems to be very common for cats. We did all the stuff you mentioned. Are they having you do the subcutaneous fluid injections at home? That was the hardest for me as Tigger really didn't like that at all. I think she was telling me to just let her go but that's so difficult to do. It's what had to happen, of course, so we held her very close when the vet gave her that final shot. It's not the first pet we've lost that way and it never gets easier. I think that's why we've decided to never have another--we just foster and/or kitty sit for friends. We currently have the cutest little black cat (13 years old) who loves to watch me on the computer. She'll knock something on the floor if she feels we aren't paying attention. I sincerely hope the treatments work for Dexter. Keep us posted.

I got an amazing bonus and they told us individually about our profit sharing at the end of the year. My contract is 1% of anything they make over the strike point. And what they've anticipated is pretty freaking awesome. The debt would've gone down a bit more, but we decided to get a new mattress. We've been sleeping on my double since last August when DH moved in. We got a queen close out floor model for 30% off. Should be getting around 1k back from pet insurance in the next couple of weeks.
Chicg - So sorry to hear about Dexter. I've had a male cat go through that treatment and my mom currently has one with the same issues. He seems to be doing fairly well for a 17 year old cat. My vet told me male cats tend to have more issues with kidney failure.
Not that it does any good for you now because of pre-existing conditions, but if anyone is interested in pet insurance, the company I've been with for 6 years is pretty awesome.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. This is really hard on me. Yes, I'm doing sub-q fluids at home 3x/week, and Hills k/d is the food he likes best so we're going with that. Today was the first on my own and it was a moderate success. He seems fine, he doesn't hate me (curled next to me now), I only wasted one needle and I think I found where in my apartment I'm going to be doing this. I guess most people do it on kitchen counters but I only have 1sq ft of counter space, it's just not going to work there, and since I'll be doing this for a while (hopefully years), I want a nice, comfy little setup for us. Next step is to find where to order all this stuff at the best price. I've found some websites for kitty kidney issues and they have a ton of resources for cheaper supplies. I think I'll get the fluids at the vet but needles and food online.
And yes to pet insurance. My company even offers that for us. I looked at that a few years ago but it's only really helpful if you start when they're young. I looked into it when mine were 9 and it was too late to really cover much. I'll definitely try it with my next pet, if I get one that's younger.
Minnesota, Dex went from not even stage 1 to stage 3 in less than a year. If you notice ANYTHING different in your cat, ask. Dex slowed down the pace of his eating, but otherwise no symptoms. I thought the slower eating was just him being 14 and having bad teeth (he's had 4 dentals). Bella has dilute urine but not registering as stage 1 yet, but that's how Dex started and I refuse to wait another 6 months for her so I'm going to get a holistic consult, I've read about some herbs that are good for kidneys. I asked about the food and they said it's not prescribed until Stage 1, I feel like I wasted 6 months when I could have been helping him, don't want to do that to her. Still need to rework my overall budget, already halfway through my grocery budget. Need to find a winning lottery ticket or money tree now and I'll be all set (what the heck is that? Looks kind of like a cat?)

UPDATE: Sam814 8/7/2014 $15,150.00 (5-6-07 $23,539.61 81, M483, MU328, MPT 151, MPT 263) | Start 11/15/12 | Previous 6/3/14 | Current | Difference | Citi Card | - | 6,900.00 | 6,900.00 | 6,900.00 | Loan #1 | 1,749.92 | - | - | (1,749.92) | BT #1 | 1,418.23 | - | - | (1,418.23) | BT #2 | 4,944.00 | 3,790.00 | 3,750.00 | (1,194.00) | BT #3 | 7,210.00 | 4,650.00 | 4,500.00 | (2,710.00) | Loan #2 | 8,217.46 | - | - | (8,217.46) | TOTAL | 23,539.61 | 15,340.00 | 15,150.00 | (8,389.61) |
Paid this update: $190.00 Total Paid: $8,389.61 Percent Paid: 35.64% The Citi Card looks like it's standing still, which it is. We've been using it to pay the medical bills and then paying down the card, so while we haven't made progress there at least it is standing still and not going backwards. I also did a BT again on #2 and paid enough to get it back to where it was after the BT fee. Slowly making progress here overall. We are within $180 of our deductible so the medical bills should slow down here very soon. We also have almost a whole month's expenses in Savings for the first time probably ever and the bill-pay account is almost where it needs to be for maternity leave. And we found a big BIG budget leak that we are working on aggressively What's really nice is our car loan is to the point finally where it is rapidly dropping each month as the payments are mostly principle. $7720 left on that and our $360 payments are making more than $300 worth of progress. Its in my sites to be gone as soon as possible mainly to free up the monthly cash flow. That payment alone is more than all of our CC payments together even though their balance is more than twice as high. So that will give us some great snowball room. SLs for DH and I together are now down under $20k and it's nice to start to see more of those payments going towards principle too, even though we aren't technically racing those debts and probably never will.

CHICG so sorry about kitty -melancholy-i don't much about cats...personal exp. runs more towards dogs...but i understand there have been huge strides in what can be done to help...i hope you are able to find treatment that works for him. i think i would have keeled over at those med bills...just reading the numbers made me feel . to many times in life it feels like when you are down they just line up to kick you... lulu thinking of you and praying for you husband seriousthistime thank you so much for the link, it is a comfort to know i'm not alone in the insanity ..i don't know how you have done this 4 times ..there were multiply moments i truly thought i was going to loose my mind...DSIL has however stood up for DD2 through the entire ordeal so i have no worries for them on that...DD1's SO said something to me recently that helped make some sense..'you have two kinds of hispanics in america..'those who are american of hispanic decent and those who are hispanic living in america'...and that it has nothing to do with time in the country but all about the attitude. he is cuban and 1st gen. and a frequent complaint of his mom is that he is 'too american' in his attitude..she was raised in this country but thinks of herself as still cuban...

so trying to decide/figure out how much to send on the bills tomarrow -bigwhoop-this is for the 'extra' payments...we don't always have the $$ to do this but this week it's an option....the problem for me is that our EF was beaten to death by the wedding and is still very small...i have started rebuilding but there have been a few hits and i'm not happy where it is at yet...on the other hand there have been the back to school costs and it's been brutal...the cost of registration for just DD3 was 200...not including supplies or replacement of out-grown clothes/shoes. we have helped several of the older (adult??) kids with some costs...one has started to pay us back...other has not and as a result the larger payments i had planned for the cards did not get made. panic says put everything to EF out of fear... logic says put it to cards...sooner paid the better compromise says put a bit toward both....

Lisa I would say Compromise is your better bet on this one. It will calm your panic about the EF and please your logic about paying extra on the cards.

more rational minds held sway and i did the compromise...but it can be hard...you look at the bank account and the list of debts and there is this crazed moment where you just want to throw it all at one and be like 'bam' it's done..and completely forget the other 10 or so you have to pay ....it's almost like a drunken urge..the closer you get to finally paying something off the more crazed you get to see that number go down...i've been known to shave it very close putting everything i can grab hold of toward a balance that is soooo close to done that i've made myself short for other things ... DH works hourly, that's just how his industry is, so there is never an exact set amount just a general range...this makes it very hard to have a pin-pointed budget as there are just too many variables. i've started something new in that those bills i can pay a portion of without fees i've started paying in every week...the hope being to build up a reserve so there are no 'blind sided' bills. i pull the $$ for the big bills every week and set it aside till the date it's due...leaving it in the checking account just has never worked. no matter how much i've talked to DH over it, if the money is there he is going to spend it (little things add up and he is never aware) school costs/fees/supplies...heaven save me this year ...they just seam to go up DH and the kids have been pushing me to get a touch screen phone...i've still have an old flip phone and honestly i haven't even bothered recently to put minutes on it...just doesn't feel like it's worth the cost to me...my cheep old lady side is starting to rear her ugly head.. ... this is where they stand at now...a couple went up do to back to school issues...the big payoff i had planned to make still hasn't happened because DSIL and then also DS needed some unexpected help...one has started paying us back, one has not...but either way it slowed the repayment... chloe med bill payed $50 and it's now done kohls it had gone up to $249.73 paid $85 so it's $164.73...still up from the $101 it was but at least now going in the right direction cap. one #1 $480.00 cap.one #2 $600.00....still up a bit from before cap.one #3 $520.00

Hi all, popping in from the South board to post this. I though it might be interesting for those who want to learn more about planning their finances: I don't know if any of you know about this but there are free college courses you can take for information purposes only (not credit although I think you can get some sort of certificate). If you google "coursera" you'll get the website and see all of the courses available but I thought this might be a good topic for those of us on these boards. It's being offered from University of Florida and, again, it's FREE. You don't need to apply or anything and you're not considered a student. This course is on personal and family financial planning. It doesn't start until Aug 20 and I think it's 7 weeks long. You create an account and then log in for the readings/homework/presentation. I did (part of) one on Thomas Jefferson and it was really interesting. You don't need to do the homework although in this case it might be a good idea. Here is the link to the class: www.coursera.org/course/uffinancialplanning but again, if you just go to coursera.org and do a search, you might find other courses that are interesting to you!

Gidgetc13 8/11/14 $17,245.74 (6/28/09 $96,421.29, M1001)I finally made some decent progress on SL5. If it wasn't for DH's trip to San Francisco later this month I might have been able to wipe that one out completely this month, but that's ok. If DH's dealership does well this month I might be able to knock that out next month. I'm going to do everything I can to try and make that happen. I am so close! Then we might switch to saving mode for awhile to build our savings back up a bit. DD1 starts kindergarten at the end of the month, so our daycare costs will go down a bit (at least during the school year). I will have to rework the budget once school starts to see how everything will work out. It will be nice to have a bit of a break on daycare costs. That is currently the largest line item in our budget!

lisa: I find it easier to keep money in savings or a different checking account until I use it for the bills. If I keep it in the main checking it either gets spent on something else or I overpay a bill trying to get it paid off faster. Another thought on how to deal with your budget is to slowly get yourself a month ahead of the bills. It took me several months to get to this point but as an example DH will get paid twice in August and I will use that money to pay the September bills. His paychecks are direct deposited into a separate checking account to keep it separate from the current budget money. This way at the end of August I can plan Septembers's budget to the exact penny.
gidget: Yay on SL5! So exciting to see only $800.92 left on it. I'm looking forward to seeing your next update on SL5. It's so amazing to think that the loan started at over 37k and now it's almost gone!

Hey y'all -- just a quick update to say that I moved to Kansas! (Yes, on purpose.) DH got a new, better paying job, so we are hoping that we'll stop adding to our debt totals and actually start paying them down again soon. I'll post my (ugly) update on the 15th. Had to borrow $$$ for the move, unfortunately. We'll just consider it an investment in our debt free future!

Update
Serious this time [2]: 8/15/14 $6,335 (12/9/2012 $11,021 MPT 266)
Still plugging away. There are two debts in Race #2, and I'm focusing my attention on one of those debts, aiming to get it paid off this fall, then snowballing it all to the other debt in Race #2. I'm seeing some nice downward movement on one of the debts, and minimal baby steps on the other.
I just got back from a week's vacation and managed not to charge anything except to my debit card, meaning I "cash-flowed" all the costs. I learned that staying out of the shops until the last day when your bags are already packed for the return home, and not spending a little bit here, and little bit there (ice cream, coffee, cold drinks) worked quite well.

I hadn't realized I hadn't updated in a while. Nothing major. I did break the $5k mark. Just keep plugging away. If I get big bonus from work this winter and a gift form my parents like I have been getting, it might be gone by January. Keeping my fingers crossed. We'll see what happens. We're going to try to get our health insurance premiums down during open enrollment and if that happens that will make a huge difference.

Minnesotagirl7 [3]: 8/22/14 $7,700 (3/18/13 $73,581.68 MPT281, 222, 226) It feels like forever since I've posted an update, but I was waiting for a few of these payments to pile up before updating again. DH says he's in no rush to pay off the tractor (its at 0%). I'm ok with that, I'd just kind of like another win.

UPDATE 8/15/2014 (yes, I know it's not currently the 15th ... just forgot to post) OweNo: 8/15/2014 $28,609.98 (03/17/08 $48,581.63, M190, M298, 190, 324) Well that is a VERY depressing update. But there's nothing I can do about that! Moving is expensive. Appreciate the well wishes from everyone, though. We are in Lawrence now - a bitter pill for this Mizzou alum, but the town is nice in spite of that made-up shoe-wearing bird being everywhere!!
