I want to buy 2 people a little gift - I need suggestions.
The first is a lady I've known for a few years. She is a great person and has been so kind to me. She is going to pay off her house this month, and I thought it would be fun to get her just a little something to congratulate her. Nothing big. Preferably something funny as she has a great sense of humor.
The second is a gal that I work with. I don't know her well at all, but she is a great addition to our company. She is getting married and we are going to have a work bridal shower. I like to honor marriage because it is one of the few things I take seriously. So, something in the "picture frame" range - but not a picture frame.
Any ideas?

For the girl getting married how about a small box of gourmet chocolates? I know it might be odd for a bridal shower, but I like getting consumable gifts I can't think of anything right now for the first one

For the lady paying off her house maybe a quirky style of piggy bank since she will have her mortgage payment extra each month.

Another idea for the girl getting married might be some of those oven mitts that look like animals, they have some that are sharks, bears, etc. We have a set of those and when my niece was young, I used to chase her around with the bear oven mitts.

Bride a rolling pin as a husband training tool. Or apron as a domestic goddess tool. Maybe a book on how to train a man or how to serve man, (not the cookbook)
I like a boxed set of silver serving spoons as a gift. They are the size you would use to serve mashed potatoes on a holiday, one slotted one plain.
Mortgage burning gift, box of matches and silver tray to catch the ashes.

I don't know if this is something you're into at all... but I love the piggy bank idea and I also love paint-your-own pottery places. They usually have ceramic pigs - it might be funny to personalize one for her with some congrats and maybe a wisecrack or two. Are there any food/drink specialty stores in your area? We have a gourmet marshmallow shop in our town and everyone seems to enjoy receiving them (the beautiful packaging doesn't hurt!). I am also a fan of consumable gifts

For the lady with the paid-off house: I don’t remember where I heard/seen it but supposedly by some tradition having red front door means the house is free of mortgage. So maybe a small framed picture of red door. Or whatever other traditions there are with paid-off houses.

I'd avoid the chocolates for the bride to be - especially if you know she's working hard to fit into a smaller gown... got a couple of plus sized bride to bes at the office (and one in my yoga class) trying desperately to be a lesser plus size for their wedding. Are you are already contributing to the Work Bridal Shower gift (one gift from everyone) or is it gonna be many gifts? I'm thinking an extra side gift if there's one big from everyone gift might be kinda awkward.... I'm not a fan of tchotchkes so while the Piggy Bank idea is cute it's just something else to dust... I'm more a fan of stuff that has a limited lifetime or can be used up. So, some sort of edible gift (candy? steaks? fun flavored cooking oil?) or a floral gift. Ok, just had a thought -- maybe a nice welcome mat for the front door (there's tons of pretty ones available)?

I love this. It would be funny, and if she doesn't want to actually keep it, she can give it to her grandkids. They have been selling super-cute piggy banks at Taget (around Halloween they were wearing costumes.) Maybe they still have some over there.
The bride is more of a serious type, so although I love the "How to train a husband" type of gifts, I'm not totally convinced she would find it funny. I wonder where she is registered.

Oh - I found her registry at Target - They are registered for a basketball and a soccer ball. ROFL. Maybe I'll get her that. And wrap it by taking it out of the box and making it really obvious what it is. She registered for 5 cases of beer. She actually registered for a few games - one of them is my favorite - maybe I'll get that. Then I can put a note in saying how much we like playing that. Makes it at least a little personal.

I wonder where she is registered. In recent years, I've always been able to find people's registries online (as long as their last name is unique enough!)

I also thought "piggy bank" (or one of those jars that say "Casino money" or "vacation money") for the lady who paid off her house.
For the bride to be - I really like your game idea, especially since they seem to be into games. So buying her your favorite game - maybe giving ideas on how to make it even more fun - would be a great little gift.

It is something I would do. And instead of traditional wedding shower/bridal wrap, use basketball/soccer themed paper. It will really stand out.

She does have a sense of humor. I'd get her the balls and then a few six packs of beer. BTW, the best wedding gift we got was a chain saw, we use it all the time. The best shower gift was a wheel barrow full of towels.

When I was pregnant with my first, my then MIL bought a large piggy bank and kept it on her mantle. Anytime anyone came to visit, she pointed it out and hinted that loose change would be welcome.
When my son was born, she gave me the piggy bank - it had to be broken to get the change, but there was enough in there to purchase a playpen.
I thought that was both creative and thoughtful.

Cute GG! Maybe we should have a pig as a swear jar at work, and then once a year we can give it to whomever (bride, new mom, etc.) They would make a g*d damn fortune!

Perfect - there was a piggy bank at Target that said "Shoe Fund" and the pig was wearing high heels. If she tosses it out, it was worth the giggle.
