1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, On April 22, 2011, this year's Earth Day, Earth is
3 facing consequences of climate change that may be caused by
4 increased carbon production due to human activity; and
5 WHEREAS, It is incumbent on all citizens and communities to
6 do their best to raise awareness about global warming and other
7 environmental issues, like wasting water; and
8 WHEREAS, It is incumbent on all citizens and communities to
9 do their best to cut their carbon production, shrink their
10 carbon footprint, and reduce water waste; and
11 WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
12 Chicago is a federation of more than 60 community
13 organizations, mosques, and schools representing the Muslim
14 community in Illinois; and
15 WHEREAS, Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar
16 calendar, when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining
17 completely from eating and drinking during this time, for the
18 whole month; and
19 WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
20 Chicago launched a campaign during Ramadan in 2009 called Green

1 Ramadan to raise awareness among the Muslim community in
2 Illinois about the environment and to encourage the reduction
3 of carbon production, encourage recycling, and reduce wasted
4 water and consumption; and
5 WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
6 Chicago will designate Ramadan every year as a Green Month,
7 dedicated to raising awareness within the Muslim community
8 about their responsibility about the Earth, the environment,
9 and biodiversity; therefore, be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12 we recognize the leading role of the Council of Islamic
13 Organizations of Greater Chicago in raising awareness about
14 green issues and the environment within the faith community;
15 and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That we designate the month of Ramadan, the 9th
17 month of the Islamic lunar calendar, as a Green Month in the
18 State of Illinois in order to promote awareness among faith
19 communities about environmental issues, the reduction of
20 carbon production, and the reduction of wasted water.
