"The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself." - Club of Rome, premier environmental think-tank, consultants to the United Nations

"We need to get some broad based support, to capture the public's imagination... So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements and make little mention of any doubts... Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest." - Prof. Stephen Schneider, Stanford Professor of Climatology, lead author of many IPCC reports

"Humanity is sitting on a time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet's climate system into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced - a catastrophe of our own making." - Al Gore, An Inconvenient Truth

"In Nature organic growth proceeds according to a Master Plan, a Blueprint. Such a ‘master plan’ is missing from the process of growth and development of the world system. Now is the time to draw up a master plan for sustainable growth and world development based on global allocation of all resources and a new global economic system. Ten or twenty years form today it will probably be too late." - Club of Rome, Mankind at the Turning Point
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We need a new paradigm of development in which the environment will be a priority. World civilization as we know it will soon end. We have very little time and we must act. If we can address the environmental problem, it will have to be done within a new system, a new paradigm. We have to change our mindset, the way humankind views the world." - Mikhail Gorbachev, founder of Green Cross International
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The concept of national sovereignty has been immutable, indeed a sacred principle of international relations. It is a principle which will yield only slowly and reluctantly to the new imperatives of global environmental cooperation." - UN Commission on Global Governance report
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Democracy is not a panacea. It cannot organize everything and it is unaware of its own limits. These facts must be faced squarely. Sacrilegious though this may sound, democracy is no longer well suited for the tasks ahead. The complexity and the technical nature of many of today’s problems do not always allow elected representatives to make competent decisions at the right time." - Club of Rome, The First Global Revolution
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The emerging 'environmentalization' of our civilization and the need for vigorous action in the interest of the entire global community will inevitably have multiple political consequences. "We require a central organizing principle - one agreed to voluntarily. Minor shifts in policy, moderate improvement in laws and regulations, rhetoric offered in lieu of genuine change - these are all forms of appeasement, designed to satisfy the public’s desire to believe that sacrifice, struggle and a wrenching transformation of society will not be necessary." - Al Gore, Earth in the Balance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Adopting a central organizing principle... means embarking on an all-out effort to use every policy and program, every law and institution... to halt the destruction of the environment." - Al Gore, Earth in the Balance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Effective execution of Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced a major shift in the priorities of both governments and individuals and an unprecedented redeployment of human and financial resources. This shift will demand that a concern for the environmental consequences of every human action be integrated into individual and collective decision-making at every level." - UN Agenda 21
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The current course of development is thus clearly unsustainable. Current problems cannot be solved by piecemeal measures. More of the same is not enough. Radical change from the current trajectory is not an option, but an absolute necessity. Our sensations of wonder and pleasure, our capacity for conscious thought and speculation, our restless curiosity and drive are hers to share. This new interrelationship of Gaia with man is by no means fully established; we are not yet a truly collective species, corralled and tamed as an integral part of the biosphere, as we are as individual creatures. It may be that the destiny of mankind is to become tamed, so that the fierce, destructive, and greedy forces of tribalism and nationalism are fused into a compulsive urge to belong to the commonwealth of all creatures which constitutes Gaia."– Sir James Lovelock, Gaia: A New Look At Life ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Little by little a planetary prayer book is thus being composed by an increasingly united humanity seeking its oneness. This ancient simple truth is slowly dawning again upon humanity, as we are about to enter our cosmic age and become what we were always meant to be: the planet of god."- Robert Muller, UN Assistant Secretary General ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "What if Mary is another name for Gaia? Then her capacity for virgin birth is no miracle . . . it is a role of Gaia since life began . . . She is of this Universe and, conceivably, a part of God. Quite a compilation of nut cases some I would consider dangerous to society. I admit we need to control pollution and take better care of our resources but I find some of the proposals quite offensive
Unfortunately, many of these "nutcases" aren't shy about putting their words into action. They have amassed considerable wealth, wield formidable power, and are utterly convinced they are mankind's only hope of salvation.
The only two things that one needs to know about God is that He exists and that you aren't Him. Most of the quoted in the OP and Reply #1 fail on both counts. A lot depends on your point of view and if you accept their premises, their proposals sometimes make a lot of sense. Sometimes I that many otherwise intelligent people overload themselves with facts to the point that they can no longer think. That happens with dumb people much sooner. It's a lot like when your boss explains to you that you are expendable and your job no longer exists or can be better and more efficiently performed by someone else cheaper or by a device cheaper and better. Except in this case, it is the powers that be making a similar proclamation about your whole life and the life of everyone else who's not one of them. The Neanderthal [Paleolithic] man lived successfully and was predominant until the arrival of the Cro-Magnon [Neolithic] man at which time he was slowly exterminated. Neanderthals lasted for a couple of hundred thousand years until about 10-20 thousand years ago ~ so we [Neolithic] have been around as predominant only a short time so maybe it's a little early for a new species to arise to take our place. If we assume that the pattern set will continue, that we'll continue essentially unchanged until we're supplanted, in the meantime we'll continue along as we have been for the last 10+ thousand years alternating between subservience and freedom, between relatively equal distribution of wealth and drastically uneven distribution. That there will be hardships alternating with plenty and there'll be occasional mass exterminations which strengthen the gene pool and relieve the pressure on the environment. What matters is how we choose to live our lives. Are we individuals or are we a part of a larger organism to which we owe obeisance. Do we respect the environment because it is useful to us or do we worship the environment because it takes precedence over us. Individualism or collectivism. Notice how the environmental movement [and some others] begin to resemble religious movements? It's interesting that those absorbed in the movements don't notice and resent when it's pointed out.
I've always believed global warming was a myth and a lie, and it was always about control. But thanks to these posts I see it's even more insidious than that. This is liberal facism and would even make hitler blush.
Marshabar and her second link have taken Ginsberg`s comment completely out of context. The New York Times interview does not support that false allegation.
Well, marsha, under miz her right honorable Ruth Bader Ginzberg, maybe we should look at the Chinese model of one child per household. It would sure serve the problem of future generations of welfare brats, , , , , , and the coming tidal wave of what was once considered ethnic minorities immigrant populations. As for the other pronouncements, I can't find a true conservative anywhere in the entire thread. What I see is elitists formulating policy stances to have the sheeple, (and especially those who vote), blindly follow like moths to a flame. And I, too, like your color coordination effort.
The full quote from the NYT Ginzberg interview: Q: If you were a lawyer again, what would you want to accomplish as a future feminist legal agenda?
JUSTICE GINSBURG: Reproductive choice has to be straightened out. There will never be a woman of means without choice anymore. That just seems to me so obvious. The states that had changed their abortion laws before Roe [to make abortion legal] are not going to change back. So we have a policy that affects only poor women, and it can never be otherwise, and I don’t know why this hasn’t been said more often.
Q: Are you talking about the distances women have to travel because in parts of the country, abortion is essentially unavailable, because there are so few doctors and clinics that do the procedure? And also, the lack of Medicaid for abortions for poor women?
JUSTICE GINSBURG: Yes, the ruling about that surprised me. [Harris v. McRae — in 1980 the court upheld the Hyde Amendment, which forbids the use of Medicaid for abortions.] Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of. So that Roe was going to be then set up for Medicaid funding for abortion. Which some people felt would risk coercing women into having abortions when they didn’t really want them. But when the court decided McRae, the case came out the other way. And then I realized that my perception of it had been altogether wrong. Readers can take from it what they will. I would be curious to hear Tiger's interpretation.
I read it as Ginsburg saying "we" as a nation and not "we" as Ginsburg alone or some small group. She never said she was concerned.
To interpret it any other way is ludicrous and stirring up trouble for trouble`s sake.
If I may. What I read is a person who reacts to polls.
There were more than just a few who had similar thoughts in 1973 after Roe V Wade. Some of them were lawyers and judges. I wonder how her legal actions during those 7 years impacted people.
The entire first paragraph of this post which is represented as a quote is not in fact a quote from the NYT article. This is an added teaser by the author of the thread. The author of the thread continues down the too familiar path of dishonesty by cherry picking phrases from the article and when taken out of context as they are posted in the above quote box misrepresent Justice Ginsburg remarks completely. This is common behavior from this poster, it is dishonest, and shouldn't be tolerated. Some people obviously never learn.
Your theory is that "we" refers to the American people--a group that even today overwhelmingly abhors the use of abortion for birth control purposes--rather than to Justice Ginsberg and her legal cohorts circa 1973? And to question your interpretation is "ludicrous"? The entire first paragraph is not represented as a quote. The portion that is represented as a quote is clearly delineated. The paragraph does not pretend to be anything except EoAD's interpretation of Ginsburg's statements during the NYT interview.
That's because Ms. marsha quoted the overlying article from EoAD. She has the "Quote Source" indicated at the bottom, and a link to the Ginsburg NYT interview labeled as "Bader Ginsburg NYT article".
" Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of."
I read it as Ginsburg saying "we" as a nation and not "we" as Ginsburg alone or some small group. She never said she was concerned.
To interpret it any other way is ludicrous and stirring up trouble for trouble`s sake.
The First Global Revolutionbooks.google.com/books?id=8RNKHGbzUuAC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=falseIn their own words. The Club of Rome has plans for mankind. The Fabian Socialists adopted these words from Omar Khayyam. The desire is to take this world and shatter it, to rebuild it more in line with the desires of the Master Class. This same poem appears as the overleaf to the Club of Rome report, The First Global Revolution. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself."- Club of Rome, premier environmental think-tank, consultants to the United Nations
The latest current official world population is estimated at 6,852,472,823.
"... the resultant ideal sustainable population is hence more than 500 million but less than one billion."[/color] - Club of Rome, Goals for Mankind ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "One America burdens the earth much more than twenty Bangladeshes. This is a terrible thing to say. In order to stabilize world population,we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. It is a horrible thing to say, but it's just as bad not to say it."- Jacques Cousteau, UNESCO Courier ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "If I were reincarnated I would wish to be returned to earth as a killer virus to lower human population levels."- Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, patron of the World Wildlife Fund ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The extinction of the human species may not only be inevitable but a good thing."- Christopher Manes, Earth First! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Childbearing should be a punishable crime against society, unless the parents hold a government license. All potential parents should be required to use contraceptive chemicals, the government issuing antidotes to citizens chosen for childbearing."- David Brower, first Executive Director of the Sierra Club green-agenda.com/quoterefs.html
