...thanks, krick... I found it interesting, too, albeit lengthy... food for thought, definitely... for example, I've never liked federal intrusion into private lending activity, such as the home mortgage interest deduction... we repealed the consumer credit interest deduction, but why not for home mortgages, too?

Layers and layers and layers...and I have never heard this discussed by any of the people well off enough to take advantage.....including the liberals that want taxes to be raised on what they see as corrupt wealthy businesses, etc... and I'm sure they use all this stuff, too. Wonder what people would say if this was messed with? I'm poor, doesn't affect me. I have no loans, mortgage, nothing. A TRILLION a year?? That's a lot of money...

EITC is one that most people recognize... and I would think you might have gotten that one? I did go to college with quite a few federal student loan borrowers... they came from all manner of socio-economic backgrounds, though...

The article, however, puts quite a different spin on what is actually going on, particularly by the terms used and how things are perceived. Very interesting article. I would be one who would have stated that I didn't benefit from a government program, but cloaked in those terms based on the article, I have. I get the mortage interest deduction, the Lifetime Learning Credit, among others.
The only way it would be fair for everyone is to have a flat tax.

How we all benefit from provisions in the tax code; some directly others indirectly and, those that benefit indirectly criticize and belittle those that benefit directly, because it is perceived that the government just gives away money in the form of, let's say for example the EITC because it is a direct benefit for those low-wage earners that actually file taxes. The others that don't qualify for that form of direct credit are allowed credits for other things such as higher education, and are allowed to deduct the interest from mortgages, student loans, property taxes, etc. The benefit from these types of credits and deductions do allow those that are in higher income brackets that do purchase property, pay mortgages, property taxes, etc., to not pay more in taxes and thus keep more of their money based upon how the tax code is written currently.
We are all feeding from the same trough. Just because some take a direct route and others take the scenic route does not negate that fact.

I seriously don't think we can, or should for that matter, maintain the status quo...right now we are heading towards disaster. In order to be set back to rights EVERYONE will feel the pain and NOONE should be excluded. I'd rather go through it now than when I am in my 80's ...

For some time I have been raving at the lunacy of our tax/revenue system. We need to shift taxes away from wealth creation (employing labor and capital is the only way we have on this planet to create wealth) and shift it onto non-wealth creating activities -speculation, privlege, monopoly, and land values (not buildings or improvements because they employ labor and capital).
