In the case of the OP; TSA's explanation was entirely appropriate. Your comfort comes after the safety of other passengers. Are you aware that you can conceal enough explosives in your rectum to blow up a plane? Check out the semi-recent failed plot to kill some Saudi Prince. If they want to take down a plane, they will. Unless we're talking taking discomfort to a whole new level. IMO all this TSA garbage is: 1) Just for show so people 'feel' safe and officials can say 'we never saw it coming' if another plane goes down. 2) For money. Which ex-Homeland Security guy lobbies for one of the companies making these? 3) Control of the population 4) Other I'm of the opinion it's about 80% #1 and 20% #2.

this tsa mess will get magnified when they are unionized.
they will be even more empowered and will do more stupid things. they will also be over paid and get super benefits that will kill the tax payer as time goes on.........more public sector unions......GREAT!

It says she was going to meet family, why couldn't they fly out to meet her? She's 95 years old, in a wheelchair, diapers and in the last stage of her battle with cancer. Who the hell decided it was a great idea to put her on a plane in her condition? she was flying with her daughter, en route to meet up with other relatives to enter into assisted living, according to the news clip I saw about half an hour ago. as far as ignoring kids and seniors, in the age of terrorists who seek out the 'weak' for suicide missions - there's a lot to be said for common sense and decency too. when the places I need to be are close enough, I drive myself at every opportunity, in my own vehicle. unfortunately, there are enough times and places that such travel isn't feasible, so I find myself at the mercy of so many others in traveling by plane (anyone that caught my rant a couple weeks ago, trying to get out of DC, can attest to passengers being at the mercy of others for sure!) I am continually annoyed by the fact that the organization in charge of our safety in airline travel is a reactionary one. every incident of someone trying *something else* to disrupt operations or bring down a plane has resulted in new rules that make no logical sense. each instance like this one, where the TSA agents err on the side of what's written in an SOP vs using their own common sense, makes me shake my head and wonder how the world has lost its way. it's just sad, really. The TSA is merely the symptom. What you described is government at EVERY level and in all forms. Before DHS and the TSA we already had a Department of Defense, a CIA, an NSA, an FBI, and myriad other government agencies that failed us on 9/11. Was anyone fired after 9/11? Was anyone held accountable? No. Because when the big government prescription fails, the answer is always to up the dose. So we got MORE government after government failed.

correct!
2008 was also a gov't failure directly, as every (4 that i know of) market control gov't agency, did nothing but watch porn at work, while the investment banks, marketed unbridled risk around the world.
not to mention madoff, sanford, and many others that would make ponze blush at their scale of fraud.

I'm sorry people - but have a plan. Don't wait until you are so ill that you can barely function and THEN decide to move across the country for assisted living. Do people really believe they are so special that they won't age or get sick or need help before they die? I know, now every one of you will come and tell me about your 283 year old grandmother that mowed the lawn every day in her own house and then drove herself to the hospital and died 2 hours later - but really, most people need help long before they are 95 years old. Have a plan.

how does this have anything to do with how she was treated by the tsa? wtf does her age and condition have to do with mistreatment?
would you use this same statement again, when someone posts about having a disabled child being abused by the tsa?'

They asked to have her soiled diaper changed so they could continue their exam to find out if there was something in there besides poop. They didn't ask her to strip naked and stand in the middle of the airport. I would have changed my baby's diaper if it was full of poop, why not change this lady's diaper. You think it is more humane to have her sitting around in her own feces?

While I don't agree with the TSA, it's been said on here over and over again that they have "no common sense" so why would you put an elderly relative who can't go to the bathroom on her own or even stand in the position of even having to go thru current airport security?
I still agree with Thyme that I hope I am dead before I am in that condition and they decide it's a great time to move me across country for assisted living.

The woman was flying to Michigan to be with family when she dies, not to get assisted living. Jean Weber of Destin filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security after her 95-year-old mother was detained and extensively searched last Saturday while trying to board a plane to fly to Michigan to be with family members during the final stages of her battle with leukemia.

She was 95, and then realized she was going to die? Maybe she should have moved when she was 87 or 92 - you know, a year or 5 after her life expectancy already ran out.
Someone else posted that she was moving to go into assisted living.

Okay - you all are right. We should change the TSA safety requirements, and post them, that anyone on their deathbed or anyone that appears to be on their deathbed doesn't have to get searched at all. I don't see how anything bad could possibly come of a posted policy such as that. Do you?

I do not agree with the TSA. What I am wondering, is if she had any nitro (new or old) that could have stained her chair, Nitro will set off all kinds of tests for explosive materials.

She was 95, and then realized she was going to die? No, she was in the final stages of her fight against Leukemia and realized she was going to die soon. I'm sure she was around 6 (give or take) when she realized she was going to die. And maybe we all need to get hospice care right now since we're all dying slowly every day. We're all going to die but we just never know when. None of us come with an expiration date, but the end date is a little easier to nail down when you're in the advanced terminal stage of Leukemia.

She was 95! She didn't realize she was going to die "soon" until she got cancer?

TSA denies making 95 year-old woman remove adult diaper WASHINGTON | Mon Jun 27, 2011 5:14pm EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Airport security officers at the Northwest Florida Regional Airport "did not require" a 95-year-old woman to remove her adult diaper, the Transportation Security Administration said on Monday. "While every person and item must be screened before entering the secure boarding area, TSA works with passengers to resolve security alarms in a respectful and sensitive manner," TSA Spokesman Greg Soule said in an email to Reuters. "We have reviewed the circumstances involving this screening and determined that our officers acted professionally, according to proper procedure and did not require this passenger to remove an adult diaper." Over the weekend, social media sites such as Twitter were ablaze with talk about the incident, including claims that the woman was suffering from Leukemia. Jean Weber, the woman's daughter, said on CNN that TSA agents would not clear her mother because the diaper had a wet substance. Weber said her only options were to retrieve a new diaper from her luggage or to miss the flight. Weber said that the agents did perform their jobs professionally. The TSA said various options were provided to the woman and her daughter during a private screening, but declined to offer more details saying the agency wanted to respect the woman's privacy. www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/27/us-airport-security-patdown-idUSTRE75Q6FU20110627?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews&rpc=22&sp=true

ROFL - she doesn't even have Leukemia.
3 oz of liquid. She knew the rule.

About 5 years ago, he got really sick (and he has a DNR)and the Dr. strongly suggested that if she wanted to see her Dad, get here now. Well, we did. And he lived another couple years. She wasn't going just for a visit to see family...she was going home to die with her family. She knew it would be soon. It might have happened already or it might not happen for a month...or a year. It's sort of tough to bring the family to her since we never know an exact date/time.

I'm not sure we know anything. According to post 51, everything we thought we knew about this case is fokelore.
I guess the moral of the story is to keep an extra diaper in your carry-on. Which, I would hope, they did anyway. I mean, sheesh, the flight is several hours.

ROFL - she doesn't even have Leukemia. If that's true, then Jean Weber of Destin needs to be arrested for filing a false complaint with DHS. Apparenttly.....either that or we have a massive TSA coverup. Bring on the flighters.

The elderly woman had pooped in her diaper. It should have been changed before going thru TSA and certainly before boarding. Who wants to smell that stench? Why didn't her daughter help her change?
