You are right when you say NYC does not define NY State and I never implied it. But people are bashing "liberal" NYC, not NY State. I know this well having often enjoyed trips to farms located on Long Island and Orange county. That, of course, doesn't include the "real" upstate like Albany, but non- New Yorkers don't see Buffalo on TV. they've never seen a Sabres or Bills game? Seen Niagara Falls? Wow.

But to some degree that makes my point too. If all you knew about Boston was the Red Sox, what would you know? Shows like "Cheers," "Boston Public" and so forth tell you more about the city than a picture of Fenway Park would. Boston also has the Stanley Cup for all it's fans to see and NYC has same sex marriages.....I prefer the Stanley Cup with all due respect to the gays or gay advocates here...just have to deal with it, I guess?? They now have James "Whitey" Bolger back among Bostonians again and that news was more important than same sex marriages in NY. As you may not know we Bostonians are about to deal with Ole Whitey and could care less about NY and it's gay marriages IMHO

There are plenty of people spinning in their graves about gay marriages in New York. As Swamp mentioned, the sentiment in some areas of upstate can be very different than downstate, and the feeling in the outer boroughs and Long Island is not that of Manhattan. The Whitey case makes a point too. All New York City Italians should be booking rooms to celebrate Whitey's case as it proves there is more than one "mafia." Do you think the "Winter Hill" gang in ole Southie or the "Mafioso" in ole Easta Bosta gives a hoot about same sex marriages anywhere in NY???

True story. When I was in college, I was tsk, tsking a story about how the Mob was involved in the production and placement of pinball machines (yes, a long time ago). A lesbian friend said to me, "We love the Mafia." When I asked why that was so, she told me that they chased the gay-bashers out of the village. I guess when the Ravenite Social Club on Mulberry was going strong, they just did not want anything that would draw police attention. Out here on the left coast the SF Chronicle has just a few sentences on page A5 about Same Sex Marriages...while the front page is about Google, Amtrak Train Wreck, and Pharmacies Under Attack or more important news than what happens in Albany NY...just saying..

New York will be the sixth, and largest, state in the union to adopt gay marriage. The bill will take effect 30 days after governor Andrew Cuomo signs it into law. I really could care less what others do in the bedroom. I do think that to often gays go out & have fun with no payment. I think they should be allowed to get married so that they can lose half of everything they have (like everybody else). It kind of equals everything out. Of course I also look at it that if you let the government into the bedroom of anyone, soon they will be poking their nose into your bedroom. This whole issue is just something else the government shouldn't be allowed to get into.

NY, is not on my list of favorite places - Neither the city nor the rest of the state. Have not been there for years and have no plans of going. Then you are missing something seriously....one doesn't have to want to live some place but the State is unbel;eivable..no I am originally from Connecticut..but to travel the adirondecks, the towns and byways..not during the Winter thank you, but spring, summer , fall..it's a wonderment..and the city itself..just to walk and look up..,.just by a sabrett for lunch , a strbucks andf look at the arichetct besides all the rest...then go home , you would never forget it asnd how many places in the world can you say that about. If you ask directions..as busy as they are, the seem to move fast with a purpose, just the nature of the beast, the great majority of them will stop and direct you, it's your responsibility to understand them, but help you they will, or the cops..very help ful. To put up a blanket post.. "is not on my list of favorite places - Neither the city nor the rest of the state. Have not been there for years and have no plans of going" Your call but I know you are mistaken on your beliefs about the state, the City, the people...

Although the number of gays who actually marry is very low it was a big news splash for the politicians but outside of the NYC area it well may backfire for them. For the gays who marry it can have economic advantages for tax purposes. I for one prefer it to be called a civil union not a marriage. marriage is a union between oposite sexes to me. Then again I am old school.

I don't much care what it's called, handyman. To me, it's only a word. The true concept of marriage is in the hearts of those who are making a lifetime committment to one another. No matter what it's called, that can't be a bad thing. While many heterosexual marriages end in divorce (and, I'm sure, homosexual marriages will, as well), I think most are entered into with love and the belief that love will last. Though circumstances may change, and love may fade, the original intent was good in most cases ... at least, IMO.

"Although the number of gays who actually marry is very low" Gee, wonder why :PAll thestyle problems cons hate them for are arguably DUE to the intolerance and laws against them.Much of the modern world is aghast at the intolerance, arrogance, and obliviousness of Ugly 'Mericans. Present company excepted, of course.

Desi, I despise NYC - it is as bad as Filthydelphi and I am from PA. The rest of the state offers very little. Even to see Niagara falls, it is best from the Canadian side. BTDT and NY just doesn't cut it.
ETA to stay on topic it is not surprising that this bunch of miscreants would demean marriage by redefining it like they did. But as another poster said, Good, let them lose. Don't forget the marriage penalty.

As a matter of fact, I think NYS is now the champ again. California has failed, and of cours Texas and Florida are totally fuqed LOL! ;D CA is way more conservative than most people think. most NE states are far more liberal than here.

Warsaw as I said BTDT. NY doesn't cut it.
What's next for the homosexuals? Reparations? Most religions teach such behavior is wrong. Too bad some forget the lessons of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Why is it that those here who don't support "Same Sex Marriages" are being demeaned and degraded by those who advocate Gay Marriages?? No wonder most of us are turned off with the discussions about Gays and Gay Marriages. I would not be too surprised to see comments against Gay Marriages be deleted and the poster banned....
IMHO, P.I.

The Bishop of the local Roman Catholic Diocese has issued a letter that all priest are to read during the homily this weekend denoucing the law.
And that would be one of the reasons I'm not particularly thrilled to be a regular parishioner.

IMHO, P.I. I am one that hasn't demeaned or degraded anyone for their opinion on this topic, but I would ask that you explain what you mean. I have a very hard time understanding why anyone thinks it is their place to impose their own religious beliefs on anyone else. this particular issue is one where the opponents' beliefs are largely based on religious traditions. can you tell me why it's OK for you (and others) to be able to impose your religious beliefs on the laws, for situations like this that do not have any impact on you?

Good Point but these same folks especially the gay activists here have absolutely NO tolerance for anyone or any group who opposes "Same Sex" marriages.. It is the Gay Agenda which is their way or the highway...IMHO
We saw this when we debated reforming DADT a few months ago and three of us had our miitary service denigrated for being opposed to that new law imposed by Obama on our military..

People who oppose gay marriage *also* say "my way or the highway" i personally don't care about anyone else's sexual orientation. it's none of my business and it doesn't affect me in any way. therefore, why should i care if gays/lesbians marry? does the fact that they love someone of their same gender really matter? i'm entitled to my opinion, and you (collectively) are entitled to yours. neither is right or wrong. just because it's a choice you might not make for yourself, doesn't mean that it should be denied to others. you love who you love.

As long as it's done with some respect for others and without undue filth, or nastiness, I've seen nobody's posts edited by staff. Those I've seen edited have been edited because they broke the CoC.

I feel as you do, moonbeam and Chiver. I see no reason why someone else's sexual choices should be my business. As long as they're not doing it in my bed, with me in it, I'm happy to let others do as they wish with their sexual lives. If they want to marry, super! I wish them happiness, as I'd wish anyone happiness, regardless of gender. There are, certainly, a number of legal issues involved. That's a worthy consideration, as I see it.

So you're saying that gays and those that support them should be tolerant of religious bigotry? Can you give me any reason why this tolerance should exist?
As to the point, yes, I am intolerant of any religious group that believes it can disregard the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution by enacting religious laws that apply to believers and non-believers alike. I loathe the Christian Taliban just as much as I loathe the Muslim Taliban, and I would fight equally against either. They are merely the same fascists on opposite sides of a religious coin, and that is unacceptable in a nation that heralds itself as the "Land of the Free."
It's time the American people start walking the walk when it comes to freedom. I've heard enough of the talk.
