Any pointers on how to get my actual FICO scores? I got started somewhere and then freaked out a bit wondering if I had stumbled onto a phishing site. Any pointers or reassurances would be welcome.

Credit Karma here, too. I used it about a month before we bought the house, and my TransUnion score on the mortgage papers was identical to the one I got from CK. It also has tools to show you how certain actions will affect your score, and your "grade" on different components of your score... I really like it.

I was hoping just to buy the scores, not to sign up for a monthly service.

Hmm... if those were FICO scores, wouldn't they be bragging about it on the home page?

It's not a service - it's just a website, kinda like NetworthIQ. AFAIK, it's the only "free" score out there, but you can also get it from MyFICO.com if you sign up for their trial membership (make sure to cancel it within 10 days).

In the past I have bought my score for $20 from myfico.com. They will offer you a free score if you sign up for their plan and they also try to sell you credit monitoring but it is easy enough to find the purchase option if you just want to make a one time purchase.

Credit Karma is not a monthly membership.

Get your annual free reports from all three agencies. Make sure all is correct. Don't worry about the score.

My credit union gives me my Experians FICO score once a month for free. Something nice they provide.

You have to go to myfico.com to get a FICO score. However, Experian ended their relationship with Fair Isaacs, so you will only get two scores; from TransUnion and Equifax. Experian sells its own score, which I wouldn't necessarily rely on because they basically cannot use the Fair Isaacs scoring algorithm, while most lenders do.
