www.wsmv.com/story/14941881/man-claims-he-robbed-a-bank-for-1GASTONIA, NC (WCNC/NBC) - A North Carolina man claims he robbed a bank of $1 in order to secure jail health care. Suspected robber James Verone said he came to the decision to rob the bank last week. "I'm sort of a logical person, and that was my logic, what I came up with," Verone said. Verone was unarmed, but handed the teller a rather unusual note. "The note said this is a bank robbery. Please only give me one dollar," he said. Verone then did something that seemed strange to everyone around: "I started to walk away from the teller, then I went back and said, 'I'll be sitting right over there in the chair waiting for the police,'" Verone said. Verone said he has no medical insurance, and wanted everyone to know that was the reason for the robbery. The 59-year-old has a growth on his chest, two ruptured disks and a problem with his left foot. He has no job and a depleted bank account. He thought jail was the best place he could go for medical care and a roof over his head, and he's hoping for a three-year sentence. He'd then be able to collect social security when he got out, and said he'd head for the beach. "I've already looked at a condominium. I've spoken to a realtor on Myrtle Beach," he says. He admits his story is unusual and says he wouldn't recommend anyone else do what he did. Still, he says he has no regrets. He is already getting good medical care now, although the jail doctor accused him of manipulating the system. "If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity, because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care," he said. Since Verone only demanded $1 and didn't have a weapon, police charged him not with bank robbery, but larceny, so he might not get as much time in the slammer as he was hoping for.

Hey, that's an idea!! If I can't find a job and my kids get sick of me I can rob a bank and go hang with the homies in jail!!! Get my teeth worked on a little, maybe get a heart transplant or something....

Maybe he should try to apply for Medicaid first before trying something so drastic. Healthcare in prison is nothing to aspire to.

Sounds logical to me under the circumstances. Now he has room and board plus medical treatment. However, he probably should have asked for more than $1. Maybe he can just do it a $1 at a time to cover the three years he wants.

Poor man can't afford the precursor to Weinercare obviously. Not long ago there was a man in Colorado who'd recently been released from prison. He took a homemade bomb to a mall in order to go back home to prison since it's impossible to get a new start in Obamaland.

He also forgot that all he had to do was go into an emergency room and get treatment free. So his primise is false. I would not be surprised if the DA drops the charges and he will be back where he started.

People like this are bringing this country down. We already have overflowing jails. He is taking away a spot from a legitimate bank robber.

This was common during the Depression. People would break a plate glass window and then stand waiting for the police. In the 19th Century, the police stations were the de-facto homeless shelters and providing a place for a bum to spend the night in an unoccupied cell was a common service. Not, these were not people under arrest, it was a form of charity to keep people alive. aw.jrank.org/pages/1642/Police-History-Policing-nineteenth-century-America-political-era.html Ain't it nostalgic!? Republicans are sending us back to the good ole days.

I just think it just a sad example of what can happen in our shitty health care system-and it is US specific. Also- for the 'just go to the ER' folks- what does one do for cancer or other disease requiring treatment that you cannot get in the ER? You know, the stuff that will kill you but isn't a medical emergency? Jail medical care does not have a waiting period or other barrier that the current system has- including the safety net- so maybe in some cases it is an option that could save a life. Cancer and the like do not stop for waiting periods or red tape. Last resort maybe, but it's an option as this guy proved. Only in America.

How was he supposed to get room and board from Medicaid? How is he supposed to get room and board with out a job? "He has no job and a depleted bank account" What should he just go to a landlord and say, I have no money, I have no prospects and I think I'll rob a bank, Can I live here?

The guy is crazy.Everyone in the US has healthcare. He should have just gone to the ER or had a doctor do it for free. That way it does not cost anyone anything, like the system is set for.

How was he supposed to get room and board from Medicaid? Did he say he even applied for welfare? No. Maybe he should try them first. That's what social services does, they provide a safety net for the indigent. He's a hystrionic grandstander.

The guy had no job, no money, yet you believe he should be given the healthcare he "deserves." Yet with no job and no money, he would be paying no health insurance...thus, the left wants "free healthcare" even though they state that isn't what they want. So, you have proven you are liars...thank you! I already knew that, of course, but thanks anyway. ;D

He's an older man, so by the Яight's logik, he saw the error of his ways and became a Яepublican. So the Яight wants free healthcare, huh?
He should get something until he's back on his feet. You know, people with obvious medical conditions can't really work now, can they? Yeah, yeah, I know, he'll cost me .0001 cent. Sure beats his condition worsening and costing us more later (ever hear about an ounce of prevention?) and/or him doing something even more desperate or dying in the streets.
No, you've proven the imaginary people in your head are liars. Do you have a lib puppet in one hand and type with the other?

"So, then, the left really DOES want "free healthcare" huh?" Not free but, certainly not private. Private = more expensive without better service.

No, only your imaginary liberals want free health care- the sensible people want a single payer plan or similar UHC, that most likely this guy would have paid into during his life and even if not, would as a citizen be covered for care like he would be in any country with a modern health care system except ours.

Soooo...free. (For him, at least...I know, even though many liberals don't seem to, that nothing is ever free. But someone getting something for nothing on their part is free to them.)
