It's not just lemonade and trick-or-treat. It's a whole way of life we are losing, maybe have already lost to a point. But when I say I like and miss the old ways people act like I am some crazy old dinosaur lady. Heck, if there are any real young people here they may not even know what I'm talking about. I feel sorry for today's kids. They have so many THINGS, but there are so many things they will never see or do, because of rules, or safety, or no parents anywhere.. too bad.

It's sad to see the lemonade stand we all remember from our childhood become verboten. Still, during the times we're remembering "superbugs" weren't heard of. Now, they're everywhere and the situation is getting worse. Even the strongest of our antibiotics are coming up against resistance. It's something to think about. I'm one of those who believe that this is our own damn fault. Society has become so afraid of germs that people are unable to develop their own antibodies. Kids are supposed to eat dirt. Wallow in it. Play with frogs and worms. We're not meant to be raised in a sterile environment. When we are, we have no defenses. Twenty years ago if you had diarrhea, you shrugged and said "I caught a 24 hour bug" and went on with your life. Probably you had food poisoning. It wasn't cause for mass hysteria. Years ago we had a neighbor who was rather *ahem* less than strict about cleanliness. Her kids were outside with no shoes in all kinds of weather and they were always a mess. I swear those people were never sick. Used to make me shake my head.

The thing I feel worst about for many children is that they don't have an opportunity to interact with their communities independently. We used to have an allowance and freedom to go to movies, swimming, cafes, and shopping on our own from a very early age. We started walking a few blocks to the creamery on our own for ice cream cones or popsicles before we were even in kindergarten. It's a nice thing when children get to know people in the community on their own and when they learn to interact respectfully based on something as real as commerce, whether it's an adult buying a kid's lemonade or a kid buying a candy bar at the store.

That is EXACTLY what I mean. Kids can't go out alone any more, can't ride their bikes for hours and hours, TALK to people. I grew up in HOUSTON-- huge city, and even there, neighborhoods were little communities where everyone knew each other, kids ran in and out of each other houses all day long...people looked out for all the kids, because everybody had a few. It was safe. Now you have to wonder about people...what they might do to your kid.. bad thing is, I don't even know if that is true or if we just get it beat in to our minds constantly the BAD things people do, while no one talks about the GOOD things people do.. we all just keep our little ones close, in the house WAY to much...now they are getting fat, having health issues, mental problems, and doing all kinds of weird things on the internet and cell phones, etc.. Sad.

I've actually never even seen a lemonade stand in my city since I started the job, lol! (we shut down sketchy unpermitted mobile outfits frequently)

This is yet another example of what regulations can do to business.
