Let's face it, the economy is not going to recover in the next 17 months. Under normal conditions, Republicans would field someone like Romney and Obama would lose. The message that the Republicans would keep hitting over and again is 'It's the economy, stupid!'
But these are not normal conditions. There is a confluence of actions in the form of the Tea Party which has left the Republicans in utter disarray. This is even bigger than the f-up over the social conservatives, who have made the Republicans unattractive to a large section of independents. Now we actually have total crackpots like Michelle Bachmann in a good position in Republican debates, and even hard core Republicans/Tea Party supporters have publicly acknowledged that Bachmann is not going to win.
What's going on? Why are the Republicans committing suicide in the form of the Tea Party? I don't know, but I do know one thing. They are blessing to Democrats.
I am an atheist, but if there were a god, I would ask him/her to bless the Tea Party and their supporters. I am a big fan. I may even start to make contributions to the Tea Party. Frankly that will have better leverage than contributing to Democrats. The best thing for the country, of course, will be for the Tea PArty to secede from the Republicans and form a third party.
Now that is my true wet dream. Will it come true? Stay tuned ...

I am waiting a little bit ... let's see where Romney is weak and the Tea Party can actually swing the nomination in favor of Bachmann. Those kinds of situations would be one to make a donation.
I don't get Soros. He has the money. He should fund the Tea Party.

I funded a Tea Party for some girlfriends a few years ago ~ we had a lovely time. We had scones, crumpets, cucumber sandwiches, etc. We had a blast and taste-tested a whole bunch of tea. It was a fundraiser, by the way.

Yep, the Republicans adopting the ideas of their lunatic fringe is scaring the heck outta the voting public. This is really a smart tactic. Appease 15% of the electorate. That will win elections.

Has the Tea Party been a blessing for Dems?
No sorry the Tea Party has been a thorn in the side of us Democrats especially out here on the left coast where they have been having protests and rallies ...although they screwed up with Michele Bachmann as their spokesperson IMHO

The dems got the pubs elected, because they failed to do anything with both houses and the pres all being dem. That was just backlash. The next election will show fear.

cme, it has almost always been about fear. I could be wrong, but I see the pubs losing seats. I am still waiting to see if they can find a presidential candidate.

The message that the Republicans would keep hitting over and again is 'It's the economy, stupid!'
I guess that most people would consider me a Republican. I know very little about the Tea Party. The message that I keep say isn't the about the economy. It's "He's a socialist stupid!" meaning of course President Obama & some but not all of the Democrats.
Why are the Republicans committing suicide in the form of the Tea Party?
The Republicans are possibly going to split their vote & that will hurt them. You have to realize that a lot of people (like me) feel that they have lost their way. They still mouth the basic Republican agenda (smaller government, financial responsibility, etc) but their actions are almost Democratic (seek financial ruin, political PCness to the extreme, etc). If President Obama succeeds in bankrupting the country & I believe that there is a real chance of that happening, the only party seen as not part of the problem my well be the Tea Party. They stand by their convictions & that just might mean not only a new powerful 3rd party but one that truly leads the country.
My "guess" is that mostly you will see in the election either a strong Tea Party member running or a strong Republican. It may not matter because President Obama's agenda could result in anybody running against a democrat winning.

I bet Reid is thankful to the tea party for offering up about the only candidate that he could have beat.
