blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2011/06/17/aarp-switch-sparks-fresh-calls-for-social-security-overhaul/I've been throwing away AARP mailings for years (apparently the state Motor Vehicles Bureau has created a revenue stream by selling mailing addresses of people over a certain age). I don't like their whiny, strident "I'm old so you owe me" tone. It's interesting that they've finally opened the door to SS reform- wonder what that will do to their membership numbers. My own opinion: SS has over-promised, over-expanded and under-charged for decades and they have to face facts. It angers me that I will likely never see any retirn on what they call a "payroll contribution". Did you know that FICA, the original abbreviation for SS, was "Federal Insurance Contributions Act"? They've been selling us a Ponzi scheme and calling it insurance.

Screw you young folks. I am old and you do owe me. I supported your parents and grand parents, so now it is your turn to support me. If the greedy politicians didn't raid the "trust" fund, we would be in great shape. I do agree with Athena that SS is undercharged. The SS contributions should be at least doubled, to give us the benefits we earned.

See, I say screw the old fogies...you has just as much time to save and plan for retirement as the current generation does now. If you planned poorly, then its your own fault. Take your pittance and clip some coupons...just feel lucky we don't cut your payments in half!

Take your pittance and clip some coupons...just feel lucky we don't cut your payments in half! Well, as one of the old fogies who actually DID plan and will have a decent income independent of SS, I'm sure my payments WILL be cut in half. DH is 72 and 1/4 of his SS goes back to the Feds because of our joint income. In my case, I'd be surprised if I got a dime. That's called being punished for doing the right thing. BTDT, I agree with you- the tradeoff when you turn over more taxes so "the government" will take care of this or that is that the givernment can make any changes it wants down the road. If those changes mean that you get less than you expected, or less than you were promised by politicians who are now retired with fat government benefits--well, too bad. You either take what they give you or you pay out of your after-tax income for a better version. There are no refunds.
