...seems it has also come to THIS... Nanny State Trolls for Homeschooled Children in Illinois Recently Illinois Senator Ed Maloney (D) introduced SB136 which would require “the parents or legal guardians of children attending non-public schools, a defined term, or private or parochial schools to annually register their children with the State Board of Education, in conformance with procedures prescribed by the State Board of Education.” Basically homeschoolers and anyone else who has deemed the public education system a failure would have to register their children with the State, since apparently Senator Maloney believes “that since the State was responsible for the education of our children, the State should know who was being homeschooled,” ... biggovernment.com/jschmidt/2011/02/12/nanny-state-trolls-for-homeschooled-children-in-illinois/#more-227536

...and THIS... Should the Government Tax Parents of Obese Children? There aren’t too many more complex, nuanced issues than whether the government should regulate a child’s health. Parents are ultimately responsible for their children — but should parenting choices that harm a child’s short- or long-term health be kept in check by a benevolent government? Should they have a right to intervene, and if so, to what extent? It’s at the core of how we think about the government’s role and individual liberties. www.onlineschools.org/education-debate/should-the-government-tax-parents-of-obese-children/

How about holding parents responsible if their kids don't do well in school? For example, how about making parents do community service in their kids school till their kids grades improve?

The McDonald's Happy Meal went the way of Prop. 19 in San Francisco Tuesday when the city's board of supervisors voted to forbid restaurants from offering toys with meals that contain too much fat and sugar. Restaurants would also need to provide fruits and vegetables with meals that come with free toys. The city said the measure was an effort to combat childhood obesity. Why wouldn't you hold the kids responsible?

Crazy that it has gone this far...anybody who argues that spanking is child abuse obviously has no real idea what true child abuse is or they wouldn't say it. I can understand those who say they disagree with it, but not those who try to say it's automatically child abuse.

Yes, i agree that both the parent AND child should be responsible (to the best of both of their abilities) for ensuring the child does well in school.
i also believe in volunteering in the classroom, and i'm lucky enough to have a job with a schedule that permits me to do so.

Frankly, spanking parents when the kids get bad grades would fix the problem altogether.

I am suggesting that a pedophile would search out a state where he never had to answer to another soul, never had to register and could keep his kid locked in a basement if he wanted to...
I'm suggesting that the there are definately parents who would pull their kids out of school and just let them languish through neglect if they did not have to abide by regulations and be held accountable.
I am saying that I believe that any reason why someone might oppose annual registration pales in comparison to the reasons why we SHOULD have accountabilty measures in place for homeschoolers.... My rights... do not supercede the rights of any child.

First of all, registration requires the parent to identify the child. They are required to tell someone else that they have a child and the child is residing at a specific address. They can't just hide them away.
Each year I have to hand in a signed affidavit of my intent to homeschool along with goals. I have to have my child weighed and measured every year, and in certain years have physicals, eye, dental, hearing... screenings... I have to take them to a doctor at some point. Every year i have to have an evaluation with an outside evaluator, who has to interview my child. I have to hand in a portfolio and evaluation letter to the school... every year at least 3 other people have to see my child. This works as a check and balance to ensure that i am not doing anything that might cause harm. Will it catch everything? No... does it give a kid a whole lot better chance than saying a parent never even has to tell the community a child exists... you bettcha...

Why should they object? What rights of theirs are being denied? What rights of theirs do they think are more important than the rights of children?
I am hardly hindered by these requirements. I know people who follow a classically rigorous curriclum, and others who unschool.... neither have been denied their rights to homeschool in PA...

Ex-Pats? (granted, my homeschooling ExPat friends may be able to choose a different home state that presents the least amount of bureaucratic obstacles in raising their kids?

What principle?
Do strict libertarians not believe in child rights?
The regulations I abide by don't create any obstacles for me raising my kids... they don't stop my religious homeschool friends from using only Creationist science... they don't stop my unschooling friends from not using any curriculum at all... so how is it an obstacle? ... All it would potentially stop is the neglect or abuse of children...

But how does this interfere with parental rights? I stated that it has stopped no one i know from homeschooling/child raising in the manner they see fit... It is not a taking away of your rights to periodically have to demonstrate that you are living up to your responsibilities.... Particularly when your responsiblities include overseeing the rights of a minor.
