...last I checked, a "tap on the butt" constitutes a "spank" and there's a billion dollar porn industry to back up my rebuttal... (pun intended)

Did Vitter get spanked too? He should bring forth a bill making receiving diapered spanking the right of Senators.

Can you text a spanking? ...only if there's a diaper involved... otherwise, it seems, it's a "sext"

Yep, things HAVE gotten that bad.
I sometimes thing that we are definitely done here in this nation: the monolith of government on all levels is simply too vast and entrenched as it interferes more and more with our lives.
If there is any justice then the judges, legislators, social workers, and prosecuting attornies in these cases will lose their lives to the feral children that they have unleashed on this society.

A psychologist spoke at a child rearing seminar. His theme was disciplining children in the early stages of life. The point he made closed with this. If there are no consequences for actions the child realizes they are in charge. To many times the first consequence they come face to face with is when the judge sentences them to jail.

"Other [disciplinary] methods" are somewhat analogous to veganism. It's not impossible to raise a well-adjusted child sans corporal punishment in most cases, just like it's not impossible to live a healthy vegan lifestyle (although some doctors disagree). Even so: - living a healthy vegan lifestyle is extremely difficult to do well, and most vegans don't. Many don't even come close.
- veganism is time-consuming and option-limiting
- there is considerable research that the problems with veganism are manifested long-term, [2], [3], etc., etc.
- there is nothing morally wrong about consuming animals. Veganism based solely on moral grounds is a religious (IMNSHO, unnecessary) act. Plus: animals are bloody tasty.
Similarly, discipline sans corporal punishment is option-limiting, time-consuming, and much harder to do well. If discipline is not administered properly, the resulting problems may be manifested years later. And finally, there's absolutely nothing morally wrong with spanking your child. As many here have commented, it gets the job done quickly and effectively. We could also extend the CP/meat analogy to include the fact that too much meat is also a bad thing. A little bit of meat for animal protein should by carried by a lot of veggies. Similarly, I see spanking as a "serious infraction only" type of discipline.

True enough, but I never said it was easy and didn't take some time and thought. By the way, I loves me a good filet medium rare.

Actually, I was trying to point out the irony that the same state that took an issue with mom spanking her child doesn't seem to have a problem when the government does it. In their defense, they are working on an opt in policy... HB 359 37.0021. (b) If the board of trustees of an independent school district adopts a policy under Section 37.001(a)(8) under which corporal punishment is permitted as a method of student discipline, a district educator may use corporal punishment to discipline a student only if: (1) the student's parent or guardian or other person having lawful control over the student has previously provided written, signed consent to the use of corporal punishment as a method of student discipline; and (2) the student is of the same sex as the educator. (c) To provide consent for the use of corporal punishment as a method of student discipline, each school year a student's parent or guardian or other person having lawful control over the student must provide separate written, signed consent to the board of trustees of the school district in the manner established by the board. www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/82R/billtext/html/HB00359I.htmCurious what the judge from the original post would say to the parent giving consent?

I'm not sure i'm for it... but its a clear line anyway... you can't hit your kid. I can remember being a student teacher and having a teacher say to me that they called CPS and the criteria was generally a broken bone... because if smacking is ok... then what do you do? judge the size of the black and blue mark? ...
The problem is, when you say the gov has NO RIGHT to interfere with spanking, but OBVIOUSLY needs to step in for child abuse... then where do you draw the line... I guess i'm glad we don't have to wait for broken bones...
Have to see how its implemented... to judge over-reaching....

Since a few folks brought up the Bible, what's the Biblical guidance on husbands disciplining wives?

My father was a school administrator back when it was legal to spank students. If he had a problem child, he would have a meeting with the child and the parents, and have the parents sign a form giving him permission to spank. He says that having the parents sign that form in front of the child was the most effective discipline tool he ever had, he only had to use it twice.

He couldn't figure out any other way to discipline a kid!? My son goes to a super strict school. It's private, and public school laws don't apply. A kid who misbehaves first gets a warning and then gets kicked out. Problem solved.
