::Your's sounds creepier EFCO :: *snicker* You're envisioning all of the windows being boarded up like I am.. aren't you? LMAO!! I'd love an old farmhouse, but the log home has been my dream since I was about 3, and just didn't find any already built that I would pay the price they were asking. I bought my house with a bunch of land on public auction for a good price. The house was in awful shape but I spent a great deal of time remodeling and putting on an addition. I still have a few rooms to finish on the inside, but it looks a lot better than it first did. A log home is really nice. Congratulations for being able to build it.

I've heard the log homes are insanely expensive to maintain. You have to have the logs sealed like every 5 years or something. One of the people at work has one and I think he said he just spent $15k to have his log home re-sealed. There goes one of our ideas for a lake house. I want as low maintenance as possible.

Swamp, is that similar to a stick house? I've heard that term used. Financially we are not ready yet, so we haven't met with the county to get all the rules out there to what can be built specifically. We also are not sure if we want to retire full time out there and maybe sell our house here. If we were to do that I would want a very solid block home for hurricane season. We do know that trailers are not allowed and there is a minimum SF requirement.

HOneslty, I have a few modular home clients and the houses look just like stick built.

We do know that trailers are not allowed and there is a minimum SF requirement. They are constructed differently than a moblie home. I believe a mobile uses 2x2 in the frame, while a modular uses 2x4's. There are some other structural differences, but I'm not exactly sure. The mobile home also has strapping on the inside, I believe. A modular is partially constructed off site and assembled on site. A mobile home also has a title, while a modular doesn't.

POM - There's a builder in FL that does ECO Houses with cement walls that come in pre-formed. Perfect for the Southern Hurricane & Heat situation!

Unless I am mistaken, this is no longer the case. Building codes today would not allow 2x2 framing, at least not in FL. DH has a mobile rental built in the 80's and it is 2x6 exterior wall framing, and I think 2x4 floors.

Dammit--everything is freezing on me, time to get off the computer then. I already typed this out once, but it wouldn't post... Log houses are higher maintenance than most homes, but I could get it re-sealed for probably 3k-5k here, for 15K they better be doing it with gold flecks! Yes, every 5 years or so is usually recommended. I live cheap though, so it'll be withing budget. I'll likely do most of it myself, so it's even cheaper. And IMHO, teenage boys are an under-utilized labor source. Around here you can still find good ol' farm/orchard boys who know how to work hard and will do so for a few bucks and a big lunch. (Actually, I pay teens pretty well when I use them--better than they'd make at a real job).

Hmmmm. If we just build a 2nd home to play on the weekends, etc. I wouldn't mind something like that at all. That way we could maybe even pay cash and not worry too much about whether we can get h.o. insurance out there. I want to build right up to the lake if we can get a permit to do so, but I'd have to build further back if for a "real" house" that would be more expensive and I would want to insure it. I'm actually relieved we aren't financially ready yet as there are so many variables. Thanks for the information! I have more options to consider.

The log home is pretty fire safe (metal roof) and will do well in snow, so I'm covered there. And if a tree falls on it, I should only have to fix the roof and maybe a couple windows--those walls aren't likely to collapse

Hi POM, Wytek Construction. Am I allowed to post the link if I don't get any money for the activity? My mom saw two of these homes go up & it is super cool to see the massive walls trucked in and erected.

POM, he may be talking about the same thing I'm thinking of, but Google ICF houses as well. I can't remember what that stands for off the top of my head but you have poured concrete walls with rebar in them. Might be the same thing or similar.
