Arab Spring: Egypt Rushes Towards Sharia and War

How hopelessly at odds with America’s best interests is Barack Obama? Less than two weeks ago he declared his support for “political and economic reform in the Middle East,” warmly endorsing the “Arab Spring” uprisings there. Then Sunday, Muslim Brotherhood Sheikh Hazem Abu Ismail announced his candidacy for the presidency of Egypt, promising to transform Egypt into an Islamic state and go to war with Israel. Reform that would indeed be, but not the kind any American president should be applauding.

Maybe Obama is still listening to his ruinously incompetent Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, who at the height of the Egyptian uprising characterized the Muslim Brotherhood as “largely secular.” Secular they’re not, but they’re certainly influential, and Obama knows it: he specifically requested that Muslim Brotherhood representatives attend his speech in Cairo in June 2009. Speaking in a mosque on Saturday, Abu Ismail said that he was confident of victory -- precisely because, unlike the other candidates, he presented a clear call to institute Islamic law in Egypt. “Mohamed ElBaradei, Amr Moussa, and Hamdeen Sabahi, the liberal candidates, will be unable to present a clear vision.”

Abu Ismail was sure all Egyptians would love his pro-Sharia platform: “If I could apply sharia in Egypt, all people, including non-Muslims, would applaud me four years later.” He dismissed all who opposed him as perverts and libertines: “We seek to apply Islamic law, but those who don’t want it prefer cabarets, alcohol, dancers and prostitution, as the implementation of Islamic law will prohibit women to appear naked in movies and on beaches.”

He also promised to go to war with Israel: “The Camp David peace treaty is insulting to the Egyptian people, so it must be canceled, and I will do my best to convince people to cancel it.” Abu Ismail made this pledge as Egypt reopened the Rafah crossing -- the only official point of entry into Gaza other than from inside Israel. Egypt had closed it in 2007 after Hamas took power in Gaza, as part of its uneasy observance of the Camp David Accords, since the Rafah crossing had been an easy route into Israel for jihadis and their weapons suppliers.

But now it appears that peace with Israel is no longer such a high priority. And it is no wonder that Abu Ismail thinks ripping up the Camp David accords is a winning issue. Last week the Tunisian Muslim Brotherhood leader Rachid Ghannouchi predicted that the “Arab Spring” would lead to the destruction of Israel. Clearly he knows the direction of events in Egypt: man-on-the-street interviews conducted during the Egyptian uprisings found ordinary Egyptians explaining that they hated Mubarak was that he maintained peace with Israel. “He is supporting Israel. Israel is our enemy,” protestors explained. “If people are free in Egypt...they gonna destroy Israel.” Many demonstrators carried posters of Mubarak with a Star of David drawn on his forehead.

In January, Mohamed Ghanem, another Muslim Brotherhood leader, said in an interview on Iran’s Al-Alam television station that

Egypt should prepare to go to war with Israel. That same month, Iran’s Press TV interviewed an Egyptian international lawyer Marwan al-Ashaal, who explained the popular discontent with Mubarak as a direct consequence of his keeping the peace with Israel: “The American-Egyptian relationships were based on Israeli security and I think Mubarak has been very dedicated to Israeli security more even than to his own people's security or the national interests.” Al-Ashaal claimed that “we see the deals with Israel that provoked people and took them to the edge.” He declared that Egypt is “never going to be a friend of Israel

Obama's backing of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt was a huge slip, revealing a lot about his personal feelings towards Israel and Jews. That many of the Obama-worshiping Americans followed him over that cliff is unsurprising...maybe if the MB takes over Egypt and kills all the Jews and Christians (as they are currently doing to the Coptics), the libs will give Barry another Peace Prize...

I don't remeber him signiling out the Muslem Brother hood over any others as a viable political party, basically I remember a positive on Egyptians solving their own political situation by free and open elections, a constitution and good luck to them, anything we could do to help as they moved toward that , give us a call. Along those lines ed.

He did say they are a important part of the political solution in Egypt and said they are a responsible party vs the Salifist fundamentalinst who are responsible for attacks aginst the Coptic Christians in Egypt. The Brother Hood is a oraganized group politically and will be a part of the parliment and since swearing off violent change, beleives in peaceful change, and how can you argue against that.
If once in power, the populace and government want o go the way of 'War", well, that's their stupidity.

"The Obama administration has been talking up the Muslim Brotherhood as a necessary part of Egypt’s future. The brothers, however, are denouncing the U.S. takedown of Osama bin Laden, so the White House might want to find some better friends.

Weekend violence in Egypt between Muslims and Coptic Christians left at least a dozen dead and highlighted the growing sectarian tensions. The killings are being attributed to Salafist fundamentalists who abhor the fact that 5 percent to 10 percent of Egypt’s population is made up of Christians. They would just as soon reduce that total to zero. But Salafi tribal chiefs distanced themselves from the violence, and it was also denounced by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, which publicly preaches peaceful change.

The Obama administration sees the brothers as a moderate Muslim alternative to the Salafists, and back in February, the White House said the next government in Cairo “has to include a whole host of important nonsecular actors that give Egypt a strong chance to continue to be stable and reliable partner.” The Muslim Brotherhood took Washington’s signal and last month announced the formation of the “Freedom and Justice Party,” which its leader Mahmoud Mosri pledged is “not a religious party, not a theocratic party.” Propaganda aside, the notion that the Muslim Brotherhood is not going to actively promote Islamist policies is absurd. Party spokesman Essam al-Erian explained, “When we talk about the slogans of the revolution - freedom, social justice, equality - all of these are in the Shariah. This revolution called for what the Islamic Shariah calls for.”

To ignore them as if they are not there, the claims are at least 20 % of the populace support them, they will be a force in the new civilien government, and to ignore that fact, is just dumb and crazy.

Indeed, the support of the Egyptian "revolutionaries" by the American left was pure liberal groupthink. Obama and his allies in the Muslim Brotherhood played the media and the left like a violin. Now the MB is in charge in Egypt, and the media has turned it's lens elsewhere to allow them to complete the transformation of a once-stable ally into another Islamic theocracy...

The Muslim Brotherhood may well become Obama's biggest arab fans. They apparently haven't stopped long enough to realize that by removing bin Laden, they just got a promotion.

And they ARE the most influential "political party" in Egypt.

I don't recommend Israel fire uop any furnaces with the thought in mind of melting any swords down to make plowshares.

What will Obama do? Good Lord, after what he has already done, does anybody think he's reformed? Hell, he's got an election to win. Reform my azz!!

I have to agree with ED on this one. If the Brotherhood wins and it seems like it will you will see a carbon copy of Iran. The idea that there is somehow going to be a democratic Egypt is about as likely as the pyramid's floating into outer space. The muslim brotherhood just think what that name alone implies.

Handy man , I question that. A change toward cooperation with Israel, possible. bit more confrontational, looking out for Palastinian, Hamas intersts, yes. While never friendly publicly ,anti Semitic, anti Israel rhetoric in the State sponsored media was still strong, not sure how much commerce and investments really done, governmental and militarily big cooperation however...

I don't believe the military are anxious to go back to a confrontational stag with Israel, they know if really feel threatened the Israeli's won't hesitate to take some actions.
They, military still very dependent on US for training, equipment, plus aid to th country.
Who is stepping in to fill that if US changes and curtails, stops cooperaion, aid. . Russia?? Those days are gone. China? If they had something they want minerals, oil, Egyptians had, ... possible. Egyptian cotton as high quality as it is, just not going to cut it.

Then you have the Egyptian populace, 80 million. Many poor, and uneducated but also many educated and I don't believe fanatically religious, over all as Iran..also Egyptians are Sunni, Iran is Shia..that is a biggie...not to you and I , to them, think 100 year wars back in the day..Martin Luther, Rome...only more so. Want a better life, freedoms, not more war.
Actually the key is as always, the military, where do they stand.

It is a concern, they , brother hood definitely will have a presence...populouse are demanding wages increases, food, housing, infrastructure..Egypt is broke...who ever rules they will be under great pressure to solve those problems..and unlike Iran, I don't believe they can turn to the military to keep populace down if they don't deliver, they , military, didn't for Mubarak, and he was one of them, Brother Hood / Military..over all, not meaning isolated acceptance by some, over all I don't see them becoming their , Brother Hood, watch dog.

If a majority of the electorate vote for group "X" there is no chance there will be a democracy? What exactly is your definition of a democracy?

You will agree of course, that all of them are models for picture post cards so tourists can send home evidence of booming economies with abundant social infrastructures and standards of living.

So "abundant social infrastructures and standards of living" is your measure of a democracy? There is a movement in this country to dimantle much of our social inrastructure and the standard of living for some of our citizens is decreasing.

Don't forget not only is the Muslim Brotherhood gaiining power and influence in the Middle East but they are growing in Europe and the USA...not sure how to deal with it but hope they are being monitored by the government agencies ..
