How far is the journey? And what quality of beer are you thinking of?
Oh, and shame on you for putting this on YM and not EE.

...how about asking "how much/what kind?" in a group of his friends, to allow for them to under-bid the contract? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![](http://us.social.s-msn.com/s/images/emoticons/angel_smile.gif)

We're probably talking 5 miles or less.
Beer comes in quality? (grin) Just kidding ~ I'm not a beer drinker. I am sure my wonderful DH would be more than willing to buy "the good stuff" whatever that is.
Hey, this is money related ~ we're talking about bartering goods/services. ;D

depends, how good friends, co-workers that aren't buddies need to be compensated in cash. When the exBF got his buddies to move a hot tub (like 6 guys) I think they split a 12 pack. I would think at least that if it is a quasi friend. Non-drinker the price of a semi-descent dinner out with the girl/wife

Yeah, but now you have to post how much you contribute to retirement, your income and your debts. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Heck, for less than 5 miles, that should just be worthy of maybe one beer from the fridge.

Ahh, I should clarify. These guys are military pilots ~ beer is an accepted/expected form of currency. ;D

Shoot! That's way too expensive then. Have the place deliver your furniture and pay the $35 service charge; you'll save money that way. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Ahh, he's buying the item off Craigslist, so no in-store delivery options.

Well, I think 6 bottles would be about right, anything less for a pilot would be an insult. Or... if you want to get into their good graces, there is a beer festival in Monterey in a couple of weeks ( www.nightthatneverends.com/brew_with_a_view.html). I'm sure you could talk your DH into going away that day too.

I would invite them to a BBQ with burgers and beer. The gas to help you will cost them about $4 since trucks don't get good mileage and even if it only takes 5 minutes it is worth an hour of their time. So I would say at least a $20 favor. You can rent a truck at Lowes for $20 an hour. So I would either rent a truck or trailer or invite them for a BBQ with at least a quality 6 pack. Not too much since they are driving so if you pay in beer it should be to go or over a long time so they are sober to drive.

I let people use our truck for free, but I'd happily accept any amount of beer.

One friend, one trip, one piece of furniture? A couple of beers. Six pack max. I wouldn't expect a whole BBQ unless if was at least a 1/2 day project.

I've notice beer inflation lately-- seems the 6 pack has morphed into a 12 pack.

Also depends on the furniture that you are talking about moving. End tables - one thing, baby grand piano - another.

Just borrowing the truck, I'd say fill the gas tank and buy him a 6-pack.
Carrying heavy things and loaning you the truck, I like the cook them lunch suggestion plus a 6-pack (microbrew or similar - don't cheap out on the beer)

It depends on whether you need them to feed your indoor and outdoor fish, wash your bunny, walk your dogs, and whether you will provide food if they sleep in your house.

You have to declare the worth of the bartered services on your taxes, don't you???

Of course you can always call Roni Deutsch if you get into tax trouble.
I recommend Dos Equis oscuro. Good beer. At least a case.

Molly, DH doesn't need to "ask" - he needs to "tell" them they will help and remind them at the time that he has back up in the form of an F-16 and a squirrel. If that doesn't convince them, he should tell them he recently qualified with the F-22A Raptor......

One friend, 5-miles, one chair? Sheesh - I would think free, but I would definately offer him a 6-pack, or 2 or 3 at the bar, depending on how the guy likes to drink.
