I can't stand Barrack Obama and turn the station every time he comes on my TV but for some reason I am a big fan of his wife. I like what she is trying to do to get kids to exercise more and eat better food in our grade schools...and I like what she and Mrs Biden have done for our wounded warriors....
I heard her speeches at a few military events and she really did an excellent job rallying the troops and their families...and she has visited our wounded and their families at our Fisher Houses and hope maybe she will visit the Fisher House in Palo Alto so I can see her and maybe thank her for her work for our wounded.....

Read the other day some elementary school kids were given sliced radishes for snack. Please...,.. RADISHES??? At least throw in some fried chicken and salad and baked potatoes with those radishes!!! Baby carrots, even. RADISHES? ? Is that a new subsidy, or what???

Actually your correct, but it is a test program to get children to try and taste different fruits and vegetables, and it seems, according to the article, kids love the idea. I am guessing that the radishes were just one of those items tested, which seems fine by me. In other words, your correct on the radishes , the ..but as usual, there is MORE to the story then meets the eye. www.olatheschools.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2164&Itemid=47Lordy I DO hope that some one isn't going to complain about another waste of $ under the Obama administration , showing how out of touch the administration is due to our fiscal crisis. The grant's purpose is to encourage children to choose fresh fruits and vegetables as a healthy snack choice. The food must be served during the school day, but not at school meal times; and it must be offered to all students, school nurse Joyce Sheffield said. The grant also helps children expand the variety of fruits and vegetables they eat, she said. So far this year Westview students have sampled kiwi (their favorite); Clementine oranges; radishes; pears; cauliflower; spaghetti squash; cantaloupe; honeydew; red, yellow and green bell peppers; jicama; zucchini, and sweet potatoes, in addition to more standard options like apples, bananas, carrots and celery. "My students have absolutely loved the fresh fruits and vegetables program," said second-grade teacher Jessica Kilby. "Not only have they enjoyed trying some new fruits and vegetables, but they have been consciously talking about eating fruits and vegetables outside of school. Many of my students have said that they've asked their parents to buy some new things for snacks and for dinner." Sheffield notices some students even cheer when she brings the fruits and vegetables to their class. "This has been so well received by our students that it has surprised even me," Sheffield said. As each item is served, the students learn about the vitamins and nutrients essential to healthy bodies contained in that fruit or vegetable. "Our students do get fresh fruits and vegetables in their school lunches," Sheffield said. "However, this helps the students learn that fresh foods can be snack foods too."

They started a program like this at a school where my wife taught and it was a big hit. I would be careful about the radishes though they can be very irritating to some peoples stomachs.
