So I take it that my "I don't care if I have to live like a bum when I'm wrinkly" rule is a bad one?

Hahaha... that reminds me of Family Guy. "First thing you want to do is have as many kids as you can. That increases the chance that one of them will make it big in Hollywood. Then who's paying the bills? Hollywood kid."

OP - DH and I keep lists of our goals and plans. We don't impulse shop. We stick to our lists. If we have something we need, we typically think about it for a month or so and then we buy it if we still think we need it. Having a list with our goals and plans on it is really helpful. It keeps us focused on what we want to do.

Um...totally off-topic but is there a way to jump to new posts in a thread? It takes me a lot of time sometimes to scroll through it all and figure out where I left off (especially on those threads that are 20-30 pages)....
Thanks!

zippy, hit the "new" square next to the thread name. It will pick up where you last left.

Zippy, I've done the numbers so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm supposed to do, I just don't always want to do it.
When I'm feeling the urge to stray, or just want to spend some money, I ask myself "is it worth it"? If it's something I want, but it won't bust the budget, I ask myself if that's really the *thing* I want to spend my money on instead of something else I could do or buy. Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes no. That helps me to spend money only on what I really value. If it's something I want that would screw up my budget, or derail my plan, that would make me end up stressed and upset, so that's a big fat NO.
I also keep my money seperated in different accounts that serve different purposes. In day to day life, only 1 account out of 4 exists in my head. I came up with that system because if I see it, I want to spend it. The 1 account, I can spend til it's empty and be ok. I'll just be broke (no spending money) until I get paid again.
Come up with a realistic plan to get where you want to be, then pay attention to your personal quirks so you can figure out what it will take for you to stick to your plan.

Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes no. That helps me to spend money only on what I really value. Being able to make those decisions is so important, no matter how big your budget is. I don't do that with smaller purchases anymore but I do it with the luxury purchases, and it keeps me from having a house full of Stuff that adds very little to my life.

Have you looked into combining some of your insurance polices and seeing if that will save money? I have two vehicles, an umbrella policy and a house with a mortgage about the same as yours, mine is about 100 less/month and my insurance is about 30 less then yours when you add your policies together and I have two more then you do! I would even throw the life policy in there and see what kind of deal you get!
Nothing particularly wrong with the budget persay, NOW sticking to it is the hard part. Discussing it with DH (and not pulling a Doxie where when he says he wants something and won't talk about it you say well I guess we will figure it out because frankly not having the DH on board is actually Doxie's biggest problem, I mean besides a budget that is more then they make every single month)

I say pay yourself first. We only budget our savings, retirement, investments and do not touch that money. Everything else is fair game but we don't feel guilty about expenditures because we know we are not touching savings. You still have to plan so that you don't overspend but if I want to buy some clothes then I won't spend money going out to eat. I like your method a lot. It's worth thinking about for my family too. Thanks for posting! Karma for you!

In a few years we'll do it again but unfortunately paying three different companies three different amounts is actually cheaper right now. And yes, sticking to the budget is by far much harder than playing with the numbers and figuring out how to make it work
