It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

I have friends who don't like that the government mandates vaccinations for their children before they can attend free public school. And I have friends who don't like that the government now submits them to x-rays before they can fly on airplanes. And I have friends who don't like that the government makes them take vision tests before permitting them to drive automobiles. And I have friends who don't like that the government makes them undergo drug testing before permitting them to work for the government. Government-mandated procedures and examinations as a condition precedent to getting to do something isn't new.... but it does seem to be growing in popularity. In fact, I've read statements by a number of posters on this forum about mandating drug testing for welfare recipients. Heh. I'd had the same thought about the drug testing for welfare recipients, Molly.

By the way, I am 100% pro choice. I just don't think it is the worst thing in the world to make sure people have all of the info possible before making a very big decision. If that means seeing fingers and toes wiggling inside of you, I don't think that is horrible.

You can file papers that make you exempt from this. You have to give a reason, and the two acceptable reasons are that there is a medical reason your child should not have a vaccine, such as an egg allergy, but you do not have to reveal the reason. Or that there is a personal reason you choose not to vaccinate your child. You do not have to reveal your reason.
This isn't a medical procedure. This isn't a medical x-ray. They don't require (technically) you to pay for this before boarding the plane.
This is a public safety issue. Your right to drive without vision ends when my right to not die from your driving begins.
Drug testing is legal for any employer, including the government. This is not mandated by the government but chosen by the employer. The government is exerting the same "control" over their employees as is afforded to any employer, should they wish to take it. It is not a law that every employee for every company must take a drug test. The employee and employer relationship is a private transaction. Some of the policies are law - but the drug test policy is an option the employer chooses. Just because the government chooses the same policy does not make it law.

Also - the vision test and the vaccination are state or local mandates - not federal mandates. I think the federal government forcing women to pay for a medically unneccesary procedure to obtain another procedure is bogus.

I think more things should be handled at the state level, actually ~ with fewer federal mandates of all sorts... but that's the topic for another thread.
