I'm saving enough to cover my needs if I live to 100+. But I'm not trying to postpone all my wants until retirement. I hope to get to Italy while I am still young and spry enough to climb the Spanish Steps. There are enough cool things in this world, I am sure I'll still be able to find new things to explore from my hoverround when I'm 90, and hope to have the resources to do so. But why wait?

On a day to day basis, we do things that are "cheap fun", but that doesn't mean that we haven't taken some pretty great vacations along the way. We've been to an all inclusive resort in Jamaica (1984), we used to rent a cabin in Tahoe for a week of skiing (1981-1986), Caribbean cruise (1994), Mediterranean Cruise (1999), Mexican cruise (2005 and 2009). DS was born in 1987 so we didn't do much until he became a toddler and then we did family type vacations - renting a cabin on a lake, Disneyland, Yosemite, etc. Our first vacation without DS was the Caribbean cruise in 1994.
We are currently in planning stages of a 2-week trip to Europe in the fall of 2012 (Vienna and Prague are definite at this point), but DH will be retired by then. ;D

I just read the thread about Huguette Clark. I'm adding "please don't let my obituary include the word recluse" to my list of reasons not to postpone fun for retirement.

better to have FU money than spend now. this advice was advice I was given and heeded in my mid-twenties, now nearing 40 I am almost at the point where I have FU money and it is feeling good I agree with that! By reining in spending in areas that aren't important, I've got a nice pile of FU money. It is good not to live in fear of being fired or of the bank jacking up your mortgage or credit card rate.

What is more sad - the guy who saved like crazy waiting for retirement only to die in his early 60's or the guy who is working at 67 because he didn't save anything? The answer to me is equally sad.. There is a proper balance. I've always been a big spender and big saver, but that works for us with 2 good incomes and no kids.

I'd rather retire early. Sadly, I've got an older friend who didn't even live to enjoy his retirement. Of course, that's a reminder that even if you're living the frugal lifestyle, to try & make time for a little fun!
