What is it with women and fast food? It tastes GREAT! ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/tongue_smile.gif) It goes straight to my hips and butt and it's not like I need anything else there.

It takes roughly 1500 cals/day to fuel your bod (most of it goes to generate the heat to keep you at 98 degrees). If you eat too much, say 2000/day, you will gain one pound a week (3500 cals surplus is one pound). Or if you exercise/eat less and have a 500 cal/day deficit, you will lose one pound a week. No rocket science involved. South Beach, Weight Watchers, yada - calories is calories. Your 1500 cal/day intake can be 1500 cals of french fries at McD or it can be a huge pile of lettuce and oil - makes no difference, 1500 cals is 1500 cals.

eating out on friday night You often mention eating out - is this an entertainment thing or because you need a meal? Cooking at home isn't the only option, we often pick up two Arby's sandwiches for $3 or $4. Or go to McD's for 2 senior coffees and two sausage biscuits (about $3 for two of us). Or bagels & coffee for $5 for two. For us, this doesn't cost much more than cooking at home. The point is - there is a huge difference between a $75 nite out and a $5 meal for two. When we don't feel like cooking, we will pick up pizza, BK or something else on our way home. But we do go out at least once every week where it requires us to get dressed and have a nice dinner where neither of us had to cook/clean dishes. Something it is just the two of us or a lounge/restaurant with friends followed by a movie/bowling/pool or something. Call it our date night or something and yes sometimes when we are just not in the mood to get dressed or anything we will order chinese food and rent a movie on demand or redbox.

cawaiu: what we do, that doesn't cost much, is have friends over. Everyone brings their own drinks and an appetizer to share. We take turns hosting and meet about twice a month. No one is burdened with expense and the price is right!!

I thought the classic argument for having a SAHM was saving money on eating out. But this confirms what I've always suspected, which is that argument is bogus and just something people say to convince themselves they're doing the right thing.

Come on, Phil. There's a mid ground. Using McD's and Arby's as an example of how you can cut down your "dinner's out" budget is just silly. Fast food is just nasty!
If I'm in a too tired or stressed to cook after a long day at work, going through the hassle of driving to a restaurant, waiting, etc. is just not relaxing and if we're out running errands and we get hungry, spending $20 on lunch at a restaurant is not appealing. In those situations, fast food is a treat - but it's not "dinner out". I'm more likely to do fast food for lunch, but occasionally I'll grab one of these for dinner when DH is out golfing:
At Arby's, I order the ham & cheddar melt on the value menu and ask for swiss cheese instead of cheddar and a packet of honey mustard on the side. There's nothing particularly nasty or unhealthy about hot shaved ham on a roll with a slice of swiss cheese and a bit of honey mustard. And at $1 it's a deal.
At Taco Bell, I order the Deal #3 Gordita for $2, then I pay another $.30 to upgrade the drink to the classic limeade for a total with tax of $2.48 for a soft shell filled with beef & veggies, a tiny bag of chips and a drink with a real lime in it.
And then of course there's subway with a 1/2 sub loaded with toppings, chips & a drink for $5.

QofCC, I'm not a nutrition saint and have done fast food for dinner, especially when the work/tee ball/hockey/drive 10 miles home out of town to fix dinner juggling act doesn't work for the night. I don't think it's especially tasty, it's not a treat, I just see it as a way to fill up the family relatively cheaply when the time demands don't allow for a home cooked dinner.

No one is burdened with expense and the price is right!! I have a small group of friends that do this once a month. We take turns hosting. The host prepares a main course, everyone else brings appetizers, sides, desserts and wine. It does not cost a lot. We are a little competitive in the cooking dept, so the food tends to be very, very good... no store deli stuff. It's also fun.

But with the kids at their current stages/ages, it's just more to have to handle. I only get to eat a full meal, served at the correct temperature, without having to get up to solve someone's issues, when we eat in a restaurant without the kids.

Dude - a lot of people posting are working moms. Get over it. And it's a lot more common for families to catch a meal on the fly when they are juggling two different kids sports/activities schedule. It's really hard to go home for an hour to cook and eat.

Sure, if weight gain/loss is the ONLY factor that your diet has an effect on. Which it isn't. Eat 1,500 calories worth of lard a day Phil, and tell me how you're feeling in a week. Beyond that, while many things can be whittled down to sheer numbers, taste buds aren't one of those things. Some of us actually find more pleasure in food than mere sustanance.
