From what I have read research wise the kid will eventually figure out his/her gender. Especially once he/she is taught "Girls have a vagina and boys have a penis". It sounds like an interesting experiment but in the end I think the kid will eventually figure it out and odds are go with the gender that matches the downstairs. There are ways to buck current gender trends you don't like without having to raise your child as Baby X. I don't think it'll do any long term harm to the child because eventually society is going to inform the kid what it is. I think the parents want to be seen as trendbreakers and "controversial" though and that's why they've decided to go for Baby X. Now raising a kid as the gender it is not, like with David who was raised as a girl after a botched circumcision, that I agree does a lot more harm than good, especially after he started telling his parents he felt he was a boy but they forced hormone treatments on him to get him to mature as a girl. I think he ended up killing himself, so sad.

It's driving me nuts because I don't remember the name of his book, this was back in the 1950's/70's when they didn't really understand much about nature. It was assumed that if they raised him a girl, he'd be a girl ipso facto.
Now we know that isn't the case.
He ended up as a man as an adult but by that point he was so screwed up both mentally and phyiscally due to all the hormones it was tragic.

Solved! Baby Storm is a girl, named after the X-Men character. Good theory! I went to school with a girl named Stormy. Last name Lake. I was jealous of her beautiful name. Dang it, she was also gorgeous. Maybe the parents were tired of girls so they want this girl to act like a boy. K for your theory, meghan.

unbelievable. I wonder if anybody objected? Just unbelievable. Don't know how they live with themselves. Really a truly monstrous act.
I know a three year old boy, friends grandson, whose circumcision was botched. He just had repair surgery. I can see him in my mind and think what it would be like if his parents made such a decision. I know family and friends would make so much noise it would mount up to heaven. It's an outrageous thing to do. Was no one outraged?

A friend of mine and I were pregnant at the same time. She has very strong ideas about a lot of stuff - gender and feminism included. She went on and on about ways she was going to make sure society didn't dictate things to her kids, blah, blah. I made a concious decision at that point that one of my goals was that my kids would fit in. They would be exposed to the same music, the same tv shows, the same movies and similiar experiences as their peer group. My friend always was, and still is, weird. Society doesn't view her as more intellegent or more cool because she disagrees with everything and was taught to be a free-thinker. She didn't win any points because she had never heard of Homer Simpson (in 1998!) She isn't more successful. She isn't happier. Her marriage isn't better. In fact, I believe she is worse off for being so anti-societal norms. And now, her kids are weird. I think they are going to be targets in jr high and high school. And I think they are not going to fit in as adults. I want my kids to have the collective shared experience that their peers are having - even if it isn't perfect. I want my kids to fit in.

Agree, thyme. Life is hard, at best. Why make it harder. If a parent runs in to a gender or any other issue, fine, deal with it, but why set your kids up for future problems? Makes no sense at all. Experiment on yourself, not your kids.

It was the norm back then, just sew him up and raise him as a girl. Change your name, move out of state and pretend you ahd a girl all along.
Nowadays there would be serious ethical outcries about doing such a thing but back then it was considered "better" for him to be raised a girl than a boy without a penis.
It was believed how you raised the kid mattered, not what they were born as. So it was assumed if he was treated like a girl and dressed like a girl, he'd become a girl.
Now we know that isn't a true.
Reconstructive surgery wasn't what it is today either.

Could not agree more, thyme. If your children turn out to be non-conformists as they develop their own personalities, good for them, but they shouldn't be forced out of a natural human tendency to conform. It is hardwired into us as a means of survival.

Witterick practices unschooling, an offshoot of home-schooling centred on the belief that learning should be driven by a child’s curiosity. There are no report cards, no textbooks and no tests.
Sounds like these kids are going to be excellent "sales associates" when they grow up!
