Same way Bethlehem became "Bedlam"... Worcestershire became "Wooster"... Fotheringay became "Fungy"... Worcestershire in England is NOT wooster. I don't see how any of these examples came about. My mistake, I was thinking of Worcester (Wooster). It happens because of a process called elision: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elision

Worcestershire in England is NOT wooster. It's pronounced "Wistah" like the wi in wicked. No "r" required. How is it pronounced in England?

I mispronounce things all the time. I read a lot and it's not the best way to learn how to say things correctly. I have this problem, too. Is niche pronounced "neesh" or "nitch"? Is consortiom pronounced "con-sort-tee-um" or "con-sorch-um?" I've heard them both ways. My pet peeve is being saying "mute point" instead of "moot point."

The one that really gets me is the "loose money".
Also, "seperate".

My biggest pet peeve is the mistake people make with "less" vs "fewer" such as: I need less problems in my life, or I want less Christmas presents this year. It's should be FEWER.

Our local grocery store finally changed the "Express lane" signs to "About 15 items" instead of "15 items or less", I wanted to clap ;D

Also, "seperate". I had a physics teacher who docked points for not spelling separate correctly. It was in the syllabus.

Also, "seperate". I had a physics teacher who docked points for not spelling separate correctly. It was in the syllabus. I had an English teacher that did this too - but only after we'd read "A Separate Peace" in class that year. she figured that we should know how to spell it after seeing the word at the top of every other page in the book. one mispronunciation that annoys me to no end is moot vs. mute. the idea is not silent, it is of no practical value to debate.

My favorite grocery store in the Twin Cities (Byerly's) has always had signs which read "10 items or fewer." ;D -------------- I remember learning at a very early age when to say I or me, so it bugs me no end when my very bright SIL, who is homeschooling her four daughters, says I instead of me. I'd look like an ass to correct her, so I don't, but I sure bite my tongue!

"Congradulations" to the OP for starting this popular thread. A couple of years ago, our high school had "congradulations to Sarah Smith on her first place finish" posted on their big sign out front. What a great advertisement for our quality of teaching!!

I probably see LOOSE misused here the most. Keeping them straight is simple, LOOSE rhymes with GOOSE and ADVICE rhymes with ICE. I hope this thread doesn't get moved to everything else.

I hate it when people around here say ambliance for ambulance. There is also a lot of "we was" "they was" "I seen". It just sounds ignorant.
But the most annoying misused words in writing is the use of "to" for "too". I recently saw a HUD document that used "weather" for "whether".
And I will agree that this forum has trouble with lose vs loose and losing vs loosing. I would venture to say that there are zero circumstances in this forum where loose or loosing is the proper word. If you can't figure out which way to spell it, just error towards lose and losing and you will be correct 99.9999 percent of the time.

Effect and affect. Effect is a noun. Affect is (usually) a verb. Cause and effect, not affect. The effects of the storm affected hundreds. (Insert snarky comment here.)

My local newspaper keeps spelling Judgment as Judgement. I know they have spell check, so I don't know how it's getting though................
As far a mispelled road signs, there's an Old Dekalb Road around my office. The road sign says "Old Deklb."

Affect is actually a verb and a noun. Poor grammar undermines my typically positive affect. And I think Ziggy and the Hallmark corporation should make a large donation to Sesame Street and the U.S. Department of Education to try and correct the "congradulations" blight they inflicted on this country.

Gee, I thought I was the only person who noticed that less and fewer are so often used incorrectly.
Apparently people don't know the difference between can and may, either. Heck, the vests worn by Walmart employees are stamped on the back with "How may I help you?"
Me and I...Why is it so hard to understand when to use which?

Yeah I know but so few people would actually use affect as a noun correctly that 99% of the time it should be a verb. Ok so I just made that statistic up but it's probably pretty close. In my experience affect as a noun isn't really common usage, it's found more in older books and silly romance novels. I'll edit my previous post though.

Woostashire...shit I dunno....I just use it to marinate my steak. I use "Woostersure" sauce on my food. I came across the best misspelling of facsimile ever: faksimalee. The guy did use it correctly in his post, though!

When we first got the Netflix (thanks YM!), my husband pronounced 'queue' as 'quay'. I almost succumbed to apoplexy while berating his lack of education.
