Thanks for the advice. It does cost another $200+ for the hopper. Question - can you leave a park and re-enter the same day? Say, we need to take a break and then go back later?
When I was looking at "packages" - it only included the regular ticket - the hopper was extra.

We would be going in July first or second week or so. I agree with Swamp - hell on earth....I went one time in may and swore I would never set foot in the state between april and october. Of course this year we went over winter break and nearly froze to death.

We would be going in July first or second week or so. Word to the wise then...book NOW, and start making any dining reservations you might want. Bring plenty of sun block-- and rain ponchos. They're hellishly expensive after you get there. And it's gonna be HOT, crowded, and it will rain every day at some point.

The park hopper passes weren't worth it to us, but we were 4 adults. We got tired about the time we had dinner reservations and went back to the hotel afterwards. We never did two parks in one day. I was glad I at least talked the group out of it for the final day. We never went to the park at all before going to the airport.
I don't know that I would "buy" the dining plan, but it was nice that it was included in our package as a supposed freebie.

I don't think i would need taxis. I would plan to ride the I trolley. That was pretty inexpensive. And, we would probably do a few days running the park and then maybe some days just sightseeing or even staying at the hotel to swim, etc. If you're staying in the park there is no way to get to the trolleys. It would be over an hour walk to get OUT of the disney property. You need to look at it on a satellite map. You can easily get around the disney park using buses/tram/boats but you can NOT get out to see the other sites without a taxi.

Get in touch with a travel agent that specializes in Disney vacations. They will ask you when you want to go and how much is your budget. Then they will ask you if you want to stay on or off site. [that means in the Disney parks complex at a resort hotel, or off the Disney property.] The Disney resorts come in 4 different price ranges. Value, Moderate, Deluxe and Deluxe Villas. Then they will ask about what type of tickets would you like....base tickets or park hoppers or water park tickets or non-expiring tickets. Then they will ask you, if you are staying on property, if you would like to prepay for your meals with the reservations and tickets. See why a travel agent is a good idea for a first time visitor? We are going for our 5th time, and our wonderful agent just takes care of everything for us. We don't pay for the use of the travel agent, they get a payback or a discount from the reservations that they make. Most people make the trip reservations 6 months in advance because that is when several of the in demand sit down restaurants at Disney begin taking reservations. The other type of restaurant is a counter service [think fast food] restaurant. Grab a couple Disney travel books at your local library or bookstore. They are wonderful resources. Palm-we will be there at that time, also. Where are you staying? Good luck with the planning and hope your vacation is a success. We are addicted to traveling.

I went a few years ago and I think it worked out well. I didn't spring for the park hopper and just planned one park a day (You can go in/out of the same park all day if you don't have the park hopper..u just can't go into other parks). At any rate, I planned one day per park and had two extra days at the end (adding those extra days came to an extra ~$10). Because I had already gone into each park during its designated day, I knew what I wanted to see and what I didn't. I used the extra days to revisit the places I really liked and get more rides.
Tip: Take water bottles/sports bottles that you can fill with ice/water at the hotel. These help in the park for cooling and will keep the $$ down (You will not need to buy bottled water there). Also, if you go there during the summer and it starts raining, take cover but don't leave. Most of the other folks will leave and when it stops raining, you will be first in line for the rides/attractions you want. This worked really well for us at Fantasmic...it started pouring and everyone left. About 25 minutes later, it cleared and they opened the show. It was a great show with very little crowd. It sucked sitting in wet seats but it was worth it not to have to wait in line for an hour only to not see it.
Also...please, please, please don't put your kids in a stroller when they are that big! If they are tired/miserable, take them back to the hotel. It was amazing the number of parents I saw carting around whining 10 year olds in a stroller. They would hit the ankles of people walking or just stop in the middle of the walk way, causing a jam. It was so inconsiderate and the kids were miserable and would be screaming about wanting ice cream, cotton candy, etc... It was definitely not a positive depiction of America. One lady wanted to leave her children (~5-6) in front of one of the roller coaster lines while she went and rode (they were too short to go but the line was ~1 hour long.,.they would have been alone there for that time). The disney worker who was walking around picking up trash told her she couldn't just leave them there so she asked the worker to watch them. She got really mad when the worker said she couldn't (her job was picking up trash not babysitting). It was amazing the "parenting" you see at WDW.
