We had buttery popcorn for brunch, popped in a pot on the stove with oil. The kids followed up with popsicles. Healthy, that's us! The kids are also watching American Ninja Warrior: USA vs the World. It originally aired in Jan. but they're enjoying seeing it again.
Drew Dreschel, one of the top ninjas, just got busted for child porn and ton of related charges. I'm hoping that ANW deals with this better than most of the other sports have. So many of the top ninjas teach kids or have a ton of kids who are fans.
Your brunch sounds great! I’m getting to ready to eat pretzels dipped in a cheesy sauce for my lunch. 😉 DD is a big fan of ANW thanks to my mom introducing her to it. I read the article about Drew Dreschel. It will be interesting to see how it turns out when they get back to new episodes. I actually haven't read anything yet. DH has been tracking it and told me. Someone else linked an article to our local gym's FB page, where DH is more active than me.
They filmed something a couple of weeks ago. We're kind of assuming it's a 'best ninjas setting records" type thing that they've done in the past. K said something new is supposed to air in a couple of weeks and it showed her favorite ninja, Jessie Graf, doing the splits on a doubledipper or something incredible like that. I think knowing Jessie Graf was involved in the stunt crew for Wonder Woman is also why she so desperately wants to see that movie.

I saw an article about it this morning. It’s true, he’s in a lot of trouble and seriously doubt he’s allowed back or to keep his gym.

Yeah, we're assuming more cases are going to come to light.

Wisconsin Beth nothing wrong with popcorn and popsicles for brunch. As I reminded somebody just the other day, a serving of popcorn has 15g of fiber. Popsicles quench the thirst from salty popcorn. When my kids were little we lived in the Southwest where it wasn't unusual at all to get up in the morning to a temp of 80+. It was too hot to eat so I gave them ice cream cones for breakfast.

Is there a thread specific to school reopening? I want to vent and get feedback on what our school is planning, but didn't want to put it here in case somebody is trying to avoid thinking about the cluster* that we're all going thru.

I don't think there is a thread on school reopenings, but I can see one being useful. I am neck deep in both sides of it.

This one started out being about college, but has evolved to include K-12

That's the one I was thinking of but couldn't find. Too late - I already started a new thread.

I'm struggling with how involved I should be with DS's college stuff. I was perusing the parent portal today to see how the billing and financial aid was coming along and noticed that his high school scholarship has posted, but the they cut it in half putting half Fall and half Spring. Normally that would be fine, except, the high school is already sending it in 2 installments, so the amount they sent for Fall was meant to be all for Fall. Also, another scholarship he is supposed to get that is supposed to be distributed by the high school hasn't posted yet. I don't know if the high school just hasn't received it yet or have and haven't yet sent it.
I know this should be on him, but every fiber of my being wants to start sending out emails right now to get it all taken care of.

Will he actually do it? College is an expensive lesson to learn. Personally I'd probably take care of it and then back off. He's going to have many life lessons to learn in his lifetime. Just MHO.

Your story of sending your son of to college sounds so much like my DD leaving. The arguing etc. I couldn't wait for her to leave and then bawled all the way home. It does get better but get the financial stuff straightened out. Dealing with the financial aid office isn't fun.

My vote is, tuition related stuff, yes. Grades and other stuff, no. Maybe copy your son on the emails, so he can learn how to go about this? This kind of stuff, I wouldn't expect an 18 year old know how to deal with effectively. Getting supplies together, I'd let them wing on their own.

Not in the house, but back in KC.

Well, since there's almost a month before they actually send out a final bill, I emailed DS and told him very specifically what needed to be done...email or call the U at this contact info about this issue and email your HS counselor asking if they received the other scholarship.
Now I wait and see.

I was going to just take care of it and copy him on the emails, but I don't think he'd actually read through them. It would be "oh, this is mom taking care of some financial aid stuff that I don't need to worry about now". Delete.

I'd take care of it but "forget" to let him know I took care of it. Let him have the feeling of screwing up big time should he forget so hopefully he remembers it and doesn't do it again.

If he's anything like me, he'll hope that it just goes away and resolves itself. (And it just might.) This would reinforce that tendency, so if you're trying to teach him the rewards of being proactive, this would have the opposite effect.

I just printed off the school supply list for K. Except it's actually for her entire school - 6th-12th grade. I don't know where to start on ordering/buying stuff. Does she really need 12 spiral notebooks and 12 matching pocket folders? I think last year the teachers told us what to get her for each class at open house.

Since you're going to be all virtual I wouldn't stress about it at all outside of making sure she has paper and pencils and enough folders to organize her work.

I always thought school supplies were much cheaper in fall, if you need to restock later in the year, it will cost more $$. They match the colors for notebooks/folders for specific classes. The older my kids got the less they cared what the teacher wanted. So you may want to discuss a bit with your DD.

Staples has one subject notebooks for 25c this week - I usually buy a lot and donate; paper folders are also cheap - poly folders were on sale last week and should be again. You can order online for next day delivery - no limits.

It sounds like kids are not pooling supplies any more, so I might take advantage of that and make them use up our old supplies. We have a ton. I'll see what the teachers say. We usually get a grade-level list by now, and a specific list from their teacher a week before school starts.

I'll admit that I carry grudges, but I would now let this go for a week only and then ask him for an update. And if needed at that time I would rub in how his sloppiness almost cost him a scholarship and that it is really beyond time that he shapes up. Make sure you have a slice of pizza on hand for that conversation

Make sure you have a slice of pizza on hand for that conversation Funny thing. He actually DID go buy Papa Murphy's again today. You'd never guess he was a poor unemployed child with how much he eats out. Anyhow, I asked him tonight if he got those emails sent out and he told me he had replied to my email that he didn't understand what I was saying and wanted to wait until I got home. I'm like...uh...no...you did not email me that...all you emailed me was "ok, got it.". Well apparently after that reply, he decided he didn't understand and wrote me again, only he just hit reply to his previous email and replied to himself. I went over it with him and showed him what the school had done and how it was going to be an issue and he did get it then and was going to write an email but wanted me to be there when he did it and I couldn't help at the time so told him to wait. Then when I was ready he was out on a hike, so I just wrote it and copied him. So, I told him that I did that one, but he needs to email about the missing scholarship. He's like "ok, I'll do it tomorrow". Dude. You're sitting at your computer and it will take you maybe 15 seconds because all you have to do is reply to the award email from the counselor in May and ask her if they've received it yet because the college doesn't have it listed. He got all pissy, but did it. Shit like that drives me nuts. Just do it!

I printed out K's schedule yesterday and gave it to her. Basically, she's got online classes from 8- lunch on M, T, TH, and F. After lunch to 3pm is basically independent study/study hall/homework time. As is all day Wednesday. This is also the time to get tutoring, etc. from teachers on an as needed basis. Her day ends at 320, the last 20 minutes or so are to check in with teachers regarding tutoring.
So it's 4+ hrs of zoom/instruction a day, with 10 minutes between sessions. Lunch is 1245-115.
No books distributed yet. And they're moving from Google Classroom to Classroom Chrome.
ETA - she's a 7th grader.

I'm getting emails from Great Wolf Lodge, at 40% off. Ditto for Mt. Olympus. I'm getting ads for Blue Harbor, in Sheboygan but don't remember the discount on them. I'm still not willing to go to any of them though.
Oddly enough, the Wilderness is sending me emails but not listing a discount in them.

C's before school care program just emailed to say their shutting down, they couldn't reach an agreement with the school regarding covid safety and are done. Granted we're starting the year with virtual schooling and who knows when/if we're going back to actual school but a lot of families are going to be screwed over by this. I can probably have my parents get him there but that's a resource a lot of families don't have.
