I brought home a cranky kid this evening. I like my kid free weekends, but I pay for it big time on Sunday night. For some reason, letting him stay up until 1am playing video games and then pumping him full of coffee in the mornings throws him all out of whack. Who would think? It pisses me off that he just seems to have a rule free, no schedule time over there. Sit in the front seat of the car, no life jackets on the boat, stay up late, play video games all day... I think back to when Ex 2.0 told me how his Dad used to bring him cigarettes home from the store when he was 14. I swear to God if that happens, I'll lose it. The whole thing pisses me off. The safety issues are the worst of course, but everything else is just such terrible parenting I'd want to kill him. And he never has to feel the consequences. Not that I think that would make him fix anything because he'll always pick whatever is easiest for him. I know. I'll admit, I fantasize about his getting hit by a truck sometimes. Not proud of that, but I do. Quite a bit.
I've decided Carrot's best shot at not being screwed over by his Dad, and bucking the odds with all the mental health issues he may have inherited a predisposition to, is his brother's influence. He really listens to/respects him while I'm often just the other parent that he needs to rebel against. My older son is a major rule follower, he won't even jaywalk. He's kind and accepting of people no matter what...which is how his Dad's side all are. Carrot's Dad's side has a lot of judgemental assholes, but they're Christian so it's all backed by God. Anyhow, I'm getting nervous about DS going away to college next Fall. Carrot has been expressing concern about him leaving and now I'm thinking, shit...I'm going to miss him, but Carrot NEEDS him. What's going to happen after he's gone?

How far away do you think he'll end up? Different situation, but I had a really hard time when my sister when to college (about the same age difference I think). She was a homebody though and came home most weekends.

He's already accepted admission at Iowa State and his other top pick is Duluth. Both are 4 hours. The other place he's applied (and is drooling over) is Huntsville. That would be a really bad, only home for Christmas break kind of deal. The Twin Cities is 2 hours. There really aren't any closer options that fit the bill for what he's interested in unfortunately.

I believe the no life jackets thing is illegal (and obviously the cigarettes). If the coast guard or police boat pulled them over to check everything, they would be in trouble. I don't know anybody with a boat that doesn't keep life jackets or some sort 3 flotation devices on board--even my scatterbrained brother who doesn't care to follow rules much either.

I'm sure he has "some". I'm also sure he isn't concerned if there's enough or they're the right sizes. Not that it really matters much if they're not wearing them anyhow.

I hope he gets boarded and ticketed.
We got the kids in the boat with DH last time we were in Rhinelander. Scott sized a life jacket for each kid, except their identical and they got mixed up so the kids just wore the ones they grabbed but my kids are very similar in size and weight right now.

Me too, but I doubt it will happen. You never hear of anyone getting checked on the river here unless they were doing something erratic and charged with BUI.
Luckily, he only has him every other weekend and boating season will be winding down soon. I think Carrot only was out with him once this Summer so far.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. I rarely get checked for a fishing license, much less anything else.

They had a good time backpacking and C can't wait to go again. Which is surprising since he threw up in the tent all over at 4am and had a miserable bloody nose on the way down.
Dh had some scent proof bags and stuffed sleeping bag, mat, vomit, and affected clothing into one of those, moved C to his sleeping mat/bag (and gave him his hat) and then spent the rest of the morning shivering as it was below freezing. So I guess it's really dh who I should be surprised is up for going again.

3 days with no one posting, that might be a record.
5 am and I've been up since 2. It's gonna be a long day. Best I can figure is insomnia from hormones?! Anyone else struggle with sleep as they hit 40? I have sleeping pills but they hit my body hard and I need 10 hours to bounce back from even 1/4 of a pill. Pretty much can't take them on a weeknight. Should have taken one fri to try to reset.

azucena - I take amitriptyline as a migraine preventative. It's actually a super low dose of an anti-depressant (10mg when they'd normally give 100mg for depression). Anyhow, the doc told me to take them before bed because it's also prescribed for insomnia. I sleep like a rock on that stuff and wake up feeling rested not groggy. I've been taking it for years now and have zero side effects even though I'm normally pretty sensitive to a lot of meds.

The girls, A's daughter and I made lots of slime yesterday. Glow in the dark slime, color change slime, butter slime didn't work out, fluffy slime. We did learn adding lotion to the mixture really helps, and when it starts to dry out you can just massage more lotion into it and it goes back to being stretchy.

Every time we make slime it's terrifying.

I also felt like I wanted to go out and run around the block ( I am not a runner). Seems like it lasted a couple of years.

We really don't have a recipe, kind of do it by eye ball. But an estimated version would be a bottle of glue, half a bottle of water mixed together. 5 big squirts of lotion mix it together, big pile of shaving cream mix together. Then add anything you want in it, coloring, foam balls, glitter ect, mix together. 4 spoons of activating solution and mix. I mix borax and water together for the activating solution. The first time I mixed it together there was still boax at the bottom of the container and was way to strong, so I dumped 1/2 of that into another container and added the same amount of water as to strong activating solution. Once everything mix together, if it to sticky/liquid we add another spoon full of the activation solution. If it is to hard or more snaps apart we add more lotion to it and just work it in with our hands. Kind like kneading bread. What we did notice today is the ones we really played with yesterday, (we each made like 4 bags) are fine. But the ones we kind of just made and put aside separated over night. So I think you really need to spend 10mins or so really kneading it, messing with for everything to really mix.

I take a half a benadryl tab sometimes if I need help sleeping. A full one tends to leave me with a bit of a hangover, less so with a half. Unfortunately this involves biting it in half which tastes terrible, might be easier with kid’s chewables? Alcohol sometimes works; bizarrely it helps me fall asleep but also makes me wake up on the early side.

When I take Nyquil for a cold, it's too potent and I need a 12 hour window before I feel like I can drive again even on a half dose.
Ooo that does remind me that I have used dramanine for sleeping, will try that tonight.
I haven't had racing thoughts and wasn't particularly stressed until fri but the insomnia had been happening all week. Nice to hear others confirm hormones. But whomever said it took a couple of years to re-regulate needs to bite her tongue lol.

I just turned 40 and I’ve noticed that I’ll wake up earlier than I need to (like 5:30am). I’ve attributed that I need to pee (some of time) and sometimes I’ll fall back asleep and sometimes I can’t. When I do fall back asleep, I sometimes have crazy dreams that I fortunately don’t remember most of the time.

For me zzzquil doesn't seem as strong but it definitely helps me fall asleep faster and more importantly unless one of the kids wakes me, I stay asleep all night. Worth a try if the Dramamine doesn't help. But maybe on a weekend just in case! My mom does tylenol or Advil pm and likes those.

Out of the mouths of babes...at bedtime tonight, C says to me “Mommy, you’re the best. Thanks for playing a game with me before bed.” I’m thinking how sweet; and you’re welcome buddy, when he goes on to say “And Daddy’s the best because he taught me to clean toilets and that is way better than cleaning my play room.”
What?!?! This kid and I clearly have different cleaning preferences. 😂🤣 Also, this bathroom cleaning episode happened several weeks ago and hasn’t been repeated by C since, so no idea where that train of thought came from today. Kids. 😉

We spent a crapton of money at the Renaissance Faire yesterday. But the kids had a blast. DH and I did too. No squabbling by any of us!
