Here's how Gingrich responded: "That's bizarre," he said. "This kind of automatic reference to racism. This is the President of the United States. The President of the United States has to be held accountable. What I said is factually true. 47 million Americans are on food stamps. One out of every six Americans are on food stamps. And to hide behind the charge of racism? I have never said anything about President Obama which is racist." Yes. Gingrich is using coded language to appeal to bigots. No. People are too quick to play the race card in this country. Any criticism of Obama is eventually called racist. Not sure. I don't know what's really inside Gingrich's heart and mind. Statistics show there are more white people who receive government assistance in the form of food stamps than African-Americans. Gingrich's comment is probably a baseless attack (blaming the president for economic conditions that have existed for decades in poor parts of America or are due to irresponsible actions on Wall Street) but I'm not sure I see how the statement is "racially tinged." Maybe there's an eye-wink in there for ignorant people who believe receiving food stamps is a uniquely African-American issue. But if that's the case, the people who believe that are probably too ignorant to find their polling station. So I don't see that as a winning strategy for Gingrich. In my experience, most people associate food stamps with someone who is unemployed and has failen on hard times regardless of race. ""

Not racist, but a strange choice of label.
I guess Newt, is trying to cast Obama as an entitlement President as opposed to the President who happens to be in office during the highest round of unemployment in years.

Definately not, do we have to weigh every word and then let the left twist it to sound racist? It's getting old. Many middle class families are having to resort to receiving food stamps if only for a temporary period, but obviously out of personal pride would prefer not to. Nothing wrong with help when the economy is lagging and prices are soaring.

He's hasn't stopped being in campaign mode, and has already started raising funds for his 2012 campaign. Going to Texas and asking $50,000 per couple, but not addressing the fires down there. It's all about him and has always been.

No Newt isn't a racist. In fact I would say if there is a racist in that exchange it's Gregory! By relating food stamps to blacks Gregory is saying only blacks receive food stamps.
Newt's reference is to recent statistics showing that there are now more people on food stamps, 14% of our population! On addition the number of poor people has :Preached new highs! These are the accomplishments of the Obama administration. Runnaway
spending , commodity inflation due to his monetary policy, and wasted stimulus rewarding his supporters like the teachers unions at the expense of the food stamp program!
Detroit is a mess! A city ruled by progressive democrats that catered to unions. Its bankrupt and is now considering legalizing gambling and prostitution to save it from total ruin!
That is precisely what Obama is doing yo America as part of his fundamental transformation. But then what would you expect from a socialist community organizer with marxist roots and an arrogant narcisistic personality and no experience doing anything to create wealth?
