Since neither my wife or I drink alcohol, we've rarely had a dinner over $100. I can't even imagine spending $1000+. I can't imagine any food being worth that amount of money. Is a playmate going to service the table to help justify that? No judgment here, but I simply do not understand the tastes of people that don't drink. Being Christians, plenty of our friends and family abstain because either they think it's wrong, or they don't want to send the wrong message. We also have, in both families, branches who are alcoholics so they abstain for health reasons because they don't want to get snared into that mess-- understandable. But... To me, a good wine pairing is just part of the meal. Beer itself is a food to me. Liquid bread. I came up on pretty standard midwest fare and virtually no alcohol-- parents didn't drink much, if at all. But I branched out when I joined the Navy and left home. I have become quite the foodie over the years, and I learned to appreciate-- almost require as a matter of necessity-- the right alcoholic beverage with the right food.

I agree- but you can sure save on money and calories if you don't imbibe!

What I should have said is we don't drink when eating out. We do drink sometimes at home or at friend's houses. It isn't about religion or some moral thing, we just don't really love it. When we do drink, it is usually mixes that hides the taste.

At home, I still probably have a couple beers a day. Not every day, but two to three times a week is about the minimum. I just like it-- especially with food.

If you do drive, you don't have to run out right after your drinks. You can sit a bit, take a walk, then go. My self-imposed limit is two drinks unless it's a special occasion. My body (242lbs 6'3") can metabolize at LEAST the equivalent of 1 alcoholic beverage per hour (1 shot, 1 beer, 1 glass of wine). If I were eating out in Chicago (which I hate to do because I hate spending ANY money in Cook County or the City limits because I don't like donating to Democrats) I would take the train from our place in the burbs and then either walk or take a cab depending on where the place is.

Well, in the city and burbs of Chicago...there are options. They are actually great options, and I have used them. In rural America (home), you either have a DD, or a DUI. No cabs, the only trains are freight trains, etc. I agree with the two drink limit, but I don't want to wait the two hours, and then hope it is out of my system.

Interesting timing on this thread. I can't imagine blowing $500 per person anywhere in Phoenix, but I did just spend $175 on dinner for two (including $30 in tips) over the weekend at Mastro's Ocean Club. I didn't drink though; I've never been able to stand the taste of alcohol and didn't want to acquire the taste for it. This was an rare splurge for me though, I consider myself a foodie but am normally into cheap ethnic restaurants (unless work is paying ;D).
FWIW I don't think Ocean Club was worth the cost but I'm glad I got to experience it.

I don't golf. But my father did. I caddied for him when he played the Old Course once. He was totally intimidated by the course. I found it fascinating! I'd seen it on TV, so walking it was pretty cool.
For the golfers, even though I caddied (carried the clubs), I would recommed that you get a professional caddy. There are bunkers that you cannot see from the tee that a placed in the middle of the fairway. Unless you know they are there, there's no way to know in advance. A local caddie would tell you where to aid to avoid them.
But, it was cool to walk the course.

I can recommend a fantastic little B&B outside of St Andrews if you are heading through that way. Have a great time. (And don't miss the Highland Park Distillery in the Orkneys!) Thanks, but we'll probably stay in Edinburgh and then head to Kirkwall, maybe spending a night on one of the other islands. We've already toured the Highland Park distillery- Scapa is another possibility. I just hope Continental Airlines co-operates; hoping to get a Business Class seat using miles.
